#179 “Free Your Mind” with Theresa

Following up on my first annual “freedom” themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on “Narrative Bias” (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and “The Backfire Effect” (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to “The No True Scotsman Fallacy” (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and “The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight” (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about “self delusion” from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. So, if you too want to free your mind and be truly independent, then this is the show for you!

Here’s my article on “unhiddenness.”

You can hear my accompanying playlist featuring “Dreaming” by Blondie, “Roam” by the B52’s, “Freedom” by George Michael, “Holiday” by Madonna, “”Free Your Mind” by En Vogue, “Freedom” by Beyonce, “My Power” by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and my fave “Revolution” by the Heartless Bastards, lyrics below:

Where you going, my friend?
Have you forgotten when
There was a time filled with hope instead of fear that’s in your heart
There was a time when life was simple and innocent to start
Do you remember?
Do you remember?

Where you going, my friend?
Have you forgotten when
There was a time when false information wasn’t so rampant in the sphere
There was a time when you weren’t questioning everything you hear
Do you remember?
Do you remember?

Constantly being advertised, your life commercialized and disguised
As happiness in pills and potions, fancy threads and cars in motion
Hypnotized by gilded lies to line the pockets of so few
While hungry politicians feed bullshit to the masses
To ensure their statuses and further divide the classes

Uh-huh

And you were born with a voice so open up and speak your mind
Raise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don’t hesitate
No need to be better or smarter than anybody else
Leave judgement at the door for others and yourself

The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind

Big Brother’s watching you and trying to sell you something new
And I just want to take away take away the blues
Big Brother’s watching you and trying to sell you something new
And I just want to take away take away the blues

The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind

Revolution
Revolution
Revolution
Revolution

When I get up, oh, I get up in the morning
All I really want is the truth
Oh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morning
All I really need is the truth

You were born with a voice so open up and speak your mind
Raise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don’t hesitate
No need to be better or smarter than anybody else
Leave judgement at the door for others and yourself

The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind

When I get up, oh, I get up in the morning
All I really want is the truth
Oh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morning
All I really need is the truth

Revolution
Revolution
Revolution
Revolution

The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind

Revolution
Revolution
Revolution
Revolution

The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is in your mind

#178 Sonita Alizadeh “Afghan Rapper and Activist”

Sonita Alizadeh was born in Herat, Afghanistan under the reign of the Taliban regime. Her family walked hundreds of miles to Iran in the rain and snow to escape. She grew up an impoverished, undocumented, refugee street child in Tehran. Without official papers, she could not attend school until a local non-governmental organization offered assistance; they provided a basic education to undocumented, refugee Afghan children.

At the age of ten, she was sold into forced marriage, but the contract fell through. Six years later, her family again wanted to sell her as a bride. With the help of a documentary filmmaker who had been following her story, they bought her some time.

Witnessing the injustices of the world, her friends swiftly disappearing as they were forced to marry, and fearing her own future, she wrote the song “Daughters for Sale.” With the aid of the Iranian filmmaker, a music video was recorded, and she was soon offered an opportunity to attend school in the US, so she fled.

Her story can be viewed in the award-winning documentary by Rohksareh Ghaemmaghemi which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016, titled Sonita. (Sign up for a library card if you don’t already have one and then you can view it!)

She has been privileged to be named as one of Foreign Policy Magazine’s Global Thinkers of 2015, BBC’s 100 Women of 2015, an Asia Societies Game Changer of 2017, a 2018 MTV Generation Change Award recipient, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2019 and featured by CNN, NPR, BBC, Buzzfeed News and over 150 publications in 20 countries.

More than 12 million girls are forced to marry as children every year, she hopes to aid in finding a solution to the problem—to help save the lives of the next generation.

Today we talk about her life, her music and her dreams.

#176 Mariaelena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena.

The second Monday of the month is inspired by the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which was published 10 years ago, of which Mariaelena was a contributor. She is also the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission.

Today, we veer ever so slightly away from the book and into the realm of taxes and billionaires, inspired by the recent Propublica Article revealing how little they pay in proportion to their wealth. In addition to the article, our conversation is also inspired by the documentary film Saving Capitalism based on the book by Robert Reich.

Send us any and all thoughts, we love to hear them. Thank you to Anthony for sharing his thoughts from our May conversation!

I’ve spoken to a few folks about this episode and learned that neurodiversity is a new term for many people. According to an online dictionary, here’s the formal def: the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population (used especially in the context of autistic spectrum disorders).

Here’s the IBM video celebrating their neurodivergent team.

And here’s the article on Cultivating Curiosity!

#174 Memorial Day Musings with the Words of Marion Woodman

Hello and Happy Memorial Day! Today I spend some time honoring those who’ve served and set the stage for thinking of a better way of resolving conflict. First part is really stepping into the Chrysalis so that we can re-emerge as something new, a society with a greater balance between the feminine and the masculine, but first I offer some thoughts on the patriarchal nature of war and the military including an analysis of the language used that is unsurprisingly phallic in nature. In honor of the Chrysalis and the feminine, I read from Marion Woodman’s The Pregnant Virgin and also little snippets from Dancing in the Flames. I’d love to hear your thoughts about all of this!

Kat Hunt is an artist and mystic who has been working in the the unseen realms for the past decade. She received her Akashic Records training and certifications from Christina Cross, longtime apprentice to Linda Howe. She is a founder of Moon Church, the feminist spiritual collective, and led women’s rejuvenation circles at Bushwick’s Otion Front Studio. Kat lives and works on bluestone mountain near Woodstock, New York, the traditional homelands of the Lenape.

Kat recently opened the Records of Fire during one of her Instagram Live offerings. It sparked a lot of internal inquiry for me that I wanted to dig a bit deeper and am grateful Kat was able to make the time to join me on today’s show, to talk about Fire and Desire ,and to re-open the records for further inquiry. Let us know how this landed for you!

#171 Marielena Ferrer-Harrington “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moonday of the month and that means, the return of Marielena Ferrer-Harrington! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and she feels it’s time to start revisiting these subjects from today’s lens. Mariaelena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. You can listen to her previous interview from September of 2020 where we speak more about her life and her work, and here’s our first conversation about Spirituality and Politics.

The book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we continue and expand upon the history and meaning of politics and spirituality, how they are related, why there connection is important and also Marielena explains how the Tarot is an important tool for her in understanding this subject as seen through the lens of the archetypes of the Major Arcana. We’d love for you to join in this conversation as it’s meant to support all of us through a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.

#170 Mary Haddad and Ann Pierre-Louis “All Black Lives Matter”

Mary Haddad is an artist and student who took an idea she had about how to respond to the repeated destruction of a Black Lives Matter sign and turned that idea into a transformational, collaborative, creative experience for students of both the Oakwood Friends School, where the sign had been destroyed, and Spackenkill community which she’s a part of. The result of her efforts is a beautiful mural commemorating the lives of just a few who have been killed by police in the past several years.

Also joining in our conversation is student clerk of the Oakwood Friends School, Ann Pierre-Louis, who helped to get the Oakwood Friends School students involved and who joined in painting portions of the mural.

The mural is currently part of the I.D.E.A. Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in America Gallery show at Cornell Creative Arts Center in Kingston.

The I.D.E.A. art exhibition is a collaboration with New Horizons Resources (NHR), The Arc Mid-Hudson, and the Cornell Creative Arts Center. It was conceived to enable the diverse population of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities supported by NHR, and their staff to express their feelings about social injustice in our world and our community. This show highlights artwork that expresses thoughts, feelings and experiences in regard to racism, social injustices and oppression faced by people supported and employed through both NHR and The Arc Mid-Hudson. Their hope is that the work in this exhibit promotes a mutual understanding of how racism impacts our entire society and community, and provides opportunity for constructive dialogue and positive change. They aim to create an environment where people can feel safe and supported in their need to discuss these very important topics and their impact. The Exhibition is on display from May 1-July 31, 2021.

You can view the virtual gallery online here.

Mary’s mural will travel throughout the Hudson Valley, temporarily leaving the I.D.E.A. exhibit to be a part of a Juneteenth event at Mansion Square Park in Poughkeepsie, and then moving to the WomensWork.Art Gallery in August and the Art Effect Gallery in September.

Additional students who participated in the mural are from Oakwoods Friends School: Kaylie Agresta, Brandon Christansen, Shakiba Daqiq, Molly Doherty, Brooklyn Dottin, Celeste Farangi, Bella Gedeon, Ryan Kraehar, lla Kumar (ee-luh), Ra Kumar, Aubrey Mahoney, Kishi Oyagi, Ally Ramos, Fio Sachs, Lulu Schloss, Ruby Schloss, Jareth Stokum, Jenine Tobias, Ibrahim Waheed (ee-bra-heem) and from Spackenkill Community: Mariam Baloch, Ria Bhutani, Amelia Chapin, Maya Chinkan, Emily Cohen, Andrew Chun, Kathryn Gagliardi, Ava Geer, Grace Haddad, Najib Haddad (nuh-jeeb), Yousef Haddad, Mya Hansen, Anikha Justin, Kathryn Kaylor, Isaac Kolisch, Emily Ma, Sophia Maslyn, Elizabeth Mastrantuono, Ofeibea Micah (oh-fey-bee-uh), Olivia Michail, Liam Moren, Udaya Rattan, Deshaun Smith, Abigail Straus, Anoushka Swain, Hannah Ullinger

After our conversation, I share a bit about open-mindedness, which perhaps is an important element to real change as it relates to both law enforcement and other elements of our world that could use an upgrade. Open-Mindedness on NPR. Here’s the Implicit Association Test mentioned in the NPR program.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radio Kingston, AND produced, hosted, and edited by ME, Theresa, so please forgive any hiccups.
