247 Kevin Ann Jordan “Style Coach and Sustainable Style”

Kevin Ann Jordan@tailoredstylist has been helping women get dressed since age three, starting with her younger sister. Growing up in a remote mountain town in California, she didn’t have a lot of exposure to the fashion world but she loved the bi-annual school clothing shopping trips and reading fashion magazines. Kevin has always wanted to help people, and after a corporate career in the healthcare industry, she realized that she could help women on an individual level through styling. Starting at Stitch Fix, Kevin was trained as a virtual stylist and later started her own business, cultivating a roster of clients around the world from Sydney to New York to Vancouver.

Always practical, Kevin disliked the amount of waste created by the fashion industry, including the amount of low quality clothing piling up in women’s closets. With a mantra of quality over quantity, Kevin began to discover the sustainable fashion movement. Starting in her own closet, Kevin learned just how bad our clothing, and consumerist culture is for the planet, its people and animals.

Today, Kevin makes it her mission to help the planet one closet at a time through her one-on-one work with clients, as well as the Sustainable Style Club she launched in 2022. Kevin is spreading the message about buying less, recycling more, curating mindful, beautiful closets and wearing clothes that make us feel great, without compromising the planet.

She’s my guest this week and shares a million good ideas about how to think about what you’re wearing and how it impacts the environment starting with understanding your style manifesto, to buying less, re-imagining your clothes and how to recycle them. Her work is truly quite transformative, and I am excited to share this conversation with you.

Here are some of the resources and companies Kevin talked about on the show today: Good On You app and website Goodonyou.eco, ForDays – takeback bag, Marine Layer, Smartwool, Nisolo Everlane,Outerknown,Madewell, Eileen Fisher and Patagonia.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

205 Nancy Graham and Louisa Finn “Love and Mohonk Consultations”

Nancy Graham serves on the board of Mohonk Consultations and the arts council of The Lace Mill, where they live in Midtown Kingston. They have worked or volunteered for numerous nonprofits related to social justice, alternative media, theatre, film, and writing. Poet/writer/visual artist under the name Nancy O. Graham; actor under the name Noa Graham. Her most recent theatre project was Orchid Receipt Service, starring Asia Kate Dillon, at Theater MITU580 in Brooklyn, pre-pandemic. Most recent film project is a short called Elegy for a Glacier, about an environmental activist and her glaciologist daughter forced to face off about the construction of a ski resort in the Rockies.

Louisa Finn is a  Hudson Valley native, whose mother was a member of the Quaker Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House, and father a Russian Jewish pianist from the Bronx.  She has spent her life thus far actively engaged in learning what it is to be human and to be herself.  She works as a Speech/Language Pathologist and Reading Tutor, and clinical instructor at SUNY New Paltz.  She is on the Board of Mohonk Consultations, where she serves as Administrative Coordinator, and Sky Lake Shambhala Center Buddhist Retreat.  She writes poetry, and is creating a forest garden in her front yard.

Today we’re talking about Love and a myriad of related and thought provoking subjects. Nancy and Louisa share about their first memories of love and how they relate to the word which takes us into the realm of spiritual materialism, caring for others, and being a mother.  The show is inspired by bell hooks and her writings on love and self love/self worth so we dive into self-love as Louisa and Nancy share their own process to love themselves better as well as how self-love relates to caring for others and being a woman. We then leave the personal towards the end of the show to talk about the public and how the work of Mohonk Consultations is cultivating love in its own way, bringing folks together to collaborate, lifting voices, and caring for land and others. We leave you with a call for your own definition or thoughts on Love.  bell hooks herself seemed to have a few, “love is the action we take on behalf of our own or another’s spiritual growth…” “love is a combination of trust, commitment, care, respect, knowledge and responsibility…” So, what say you?

#167 Marielena Ferrer “Espiritualidad y Politica”

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer-Harrington! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and she feels it’s time to start revisiting these subjects from today’s lens. Mariaelena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is an artist and the artist behind Radio Kingston has begun its Muchas Flores (Un Jardin, Many Flowers, One Garden) Campaign to welcome in the warm season. Check it out over People’s Place. You can listen to her previous interview from September of 2020 where we speak more about her life and her work. Today, and every second Moonday of the month, she’ll be joining me to discuss various topics related to this important book.

The book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Spirituality and politics will set the tone for our monthly conversations as we meander through topics related to power, money, purpose, sustainability, compassion, community, participation in politics, service, ethics, the tarot and wherever else we are guided. We’d love for you to join in this conversation as it’s meant to support all of us through a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.

#116 “Happy Earth Day!” with Jaysa Hunter-Mellers, Youth Climate Advocate and Lynne Cherry of Young Voices for the Planet

Big Day, Happy Earth Day! Today on the show…

Jaysa Hunter-Mellers’ dynamic speeches at rallies and her testimony at City Hall helped shut down the coal-fired power plant that was causing her asthma. Jaysa has become a passionate advocate for environmental justice and for national school civic education so that kids—and adults, too—can learn how to participate in their own governance, take action, and speak to power like she did. At 14 years old, Jaysa continues to galvanize audiences with a courage and wisdom. She has been a Youth Leadership Panel Participant at OMEGA’s 2019 Drawdown Conference and co-led YVFP’s Civic Engagement and Democracy workshop at the Ashokan Center’s 2020 Youth Empowerment & Sustainability Summit (YESS!).

Jaysa won admission to the Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict Multi-Magnet Campus where she attends the Information Technology and Software Engineering School. Its mission is to create a culture for passionate investigators to develop solutions for the global community that lead to fulfilling careers. Jaysa is active in her school’s Debate Team where she’s frequently won 1st place. In addition to her school Drama Club, Jaysa’s been lead singer and performer for several theatrical productions at the 80-year-old, Broadway-sized Klein Memorial Auditorium. Jaysa’s other pursuits include Vex Robotics Team, Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club, and Student Council. She’s participated in the Girls Leadership Summit at Fairfield University and the STEM Girls Who Code Summit at Bridgeport University. Jaysa is also a TIME Kid Hero for the Planet.

Lynne Cherry, Author, Illustrator, originator, producer and director of the Young Voices for the Planet films, is well-known for her popular children’s books especially her rain forest classic, The Great Kapok Tree and her environmental history A River Ran Wild. Lynne Cherry is the founder of YVFP and currently a Visiting Scholar at the Benjamin Center @ SUNY New Paltz. Lynne is collaborating with a variety of interdisciplinary partners to bring the YVFP film series and curriculum into NY schools and working with the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center on a professional development series for educators interested in integrating civic engagement, climate education and environmental justice into their classrooms.

Young Voices for the Planet made a short doc film about Jaysa’s story, Words Have Power. The film educates people about climate change and its effects upon humans, social justice in relation to climate justice, and environmental racism. Jaysa and Lynne have spoken after film screenings including the Belmont World Film Festival and the Climate Action Film Festival. Here’s the Words Have Power lesson plan.

The mission of the Young Voices for the Planet film series is to to limit the magnitude of climate change and its impacts by empowering children and youth, through uplifting and inspiring success stories, to take an essential role in informing their communities — and society at large, challenging decision-makers, and catalyzing change. They document youth speaking out, creating solutions and leading the change. These youth solutions to the climate crisis include stories of California kids banning plastic bags, Florida students saving their school $53,000 in energy costs, an 11-year-old German boy planting millions of trees and other young people changing laws, changing minds and changing society as they reduce the carbon footprint of their homes, schools and communities.

Some vital YVFP partners:

YVFP also supports these state and federal initiatives:

  • New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky has introduced Senate Bill S6837that establishes a climate change education grant program. In 2016, thanks to a campaign by ACE and Global Kids, the NYC Council passed Resolution 0375-2014calling on the New York State Department of Education to include climate change lessons in the State’s K-12 curriculum.
  • Spurred by youth climate strikersCalifornia Congresswoman, Barbara Lee, introduced a House resolution – H.Res 574 – in September 2019, supporting the teaching of climate change in U.S. schools.

And last but not least, here are a few links showing the relationship between Air Pollution & Corona Virus

#98 “Artists and Activists” Helene Richman + Judith “Zelda” Miller

My first guest today is Helene Richman, a mom, wife, artist and creative force behind @brandhelene (Twitter, Facebook) who’s been working with a group of girl entrepreneurs, the Start Up Squad, at the Hodge Center in Kingston, NY. She’s been helping them learn about and build a business. I got to hang out with the girls a few weeks ago and talk about how to create their own radio show. After some prep and a little training, they all got to interview one another. I play some snippets of their interviews during today’s show as well as talk about what the girls have done in the program. After meeting with several entrepreneurs in the area the girls settled in on t-shirts for their business which they will debut at @madeinkingstonny this Thursday! Helene also shares about her corporate business experience and how she’s transferring that in to more service oriented roles. This year she organized the Hudson Valley Design Collective, (Facebook) focusing on upcycling used tectiles in an effort to help shift the waste in the clothing business. The Collective will also be at Made in Kingston along with Helene’s other endeavor with BlocArt, selling upcycled wood made by living wage workers in South Africa. No wonder this lady has another cold!

Next up is Zelda aka Judith Z. Miller @artistsoulspeaks an artist, actor, aspiring shaman and healer who’s talking about her work-in-progress solo show, Que Será, Será: A Life’s Journey of Sexual Orientation & Gender Expression. This multi-media show chronicles the joys and challenges of navigating non-binary Queerness from childhood in the 1950’s to adulthood. Zelda will be performing a work-in-progress production of the show on December 7 @ 8:30 pm & December 8 @ 3 pm at the @lgbtqcenter here in Kingston. Zelda shares about how she got into theater, some of the more powerful experiences she’s had like performing pieces in a women’s prison in Virginia, or a short piece that helped her heal her younger self who was forced to wear dresses against her wishes. Zelda is a gifted, open-hearted, magical and mystical being who has stories to share that are guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and most definitely think! If you can’t get to her live performance, Radio Kingston will be live streaming the Sunday show from their Facebook page which you can view any time ->->-> Check it out!!!

#84 “Living Cooperatively” Evelyn Wright, Commonwealth HV and Julia Farr, Kingston Land Trust

Today I have a special guest host, MY MOM! In town for my big nuptials happening this weekend. We’re talking commons and cooperatives, economic democracy and sustainability with special guests Evelyn Wright founder of Commonwealth Hudson Valley and Julia Farr, Executive Director of the Kingston Land Trust. The website of Commonwealth HV perfectly sums up the importance of the work these women do, "Economic stagnation and the impending climate crisis have provoked a global flowering of interest and activity in developing innovative, community-driven ways to address income and wealth inequality, meet people’s needs, and build more stable, just communities. Communities are using a growing toolbox of strategies including cooperatives, community land trusts, non-extractive financing, and collaborative processes to create good, locally rooted jobs, democratize community wealth, and rebuild local commons. Cities and regions are supporting these efforts by creating support ecosystems, mobilizing anchor purchasing, and building grassroots incubators." Both of these ladies are spearheading this type of transformation in our community, and we hope it inspires you to be more cooperatively wherever you are.

#10 Rebecca Moore (Musician, Avant-Guard Performer, Activist) “From Art to Veganism”

On today’s show Shana and Theresa talk with Rebecca Moore, musician, actor, performance artist, educator, activist and co-founder of Hudson Valley Veg Fest. She talks to us about what it was like growing up in NYC, collaborating with pioneers of the 80’s and 90’s NYC art scene, making and playing music, and fighting for the rights of artists and tenants during the height of Manhattan’s gentrification. Rebecca befriended a chicken at summer camp when she was 10 years old which would forever have a profound impact on who she is and what she does. Now, as a full-time animal rights activist she has The Institute for Animal Happiness , Rebecca talks about the ways she educates others on the agriculture industry, and how she is building a Vegan movement in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Her work is all about creating a culture of compassion which includes compassion for self and others. Words of wisdom from Rebecca, activists, be sure to take care of yourselves, don’t fall prey to guilt trips, and surround yourselves with those who support you!

Next week we sit down with Rebecca Martin, musician, environmental and political activist, and community builder. Mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss this!
