Can you tell we’re excited about our March book Can you tell we’re excited about our March book discussion. Here’s another little nugget you can dig into to inspire our conversation. If you can’t read the book, you can still check out the pods that were shared in yesterday’s post and this article. More to come about how to engage in the conversation come March 3rd! Posted @withregram • @nytmag Silvia Federici is a longtime advocate of the idea that domestic work is unwaged labor and was a founder of the Wages for Housework movement in the early 1970s. It is a form of gendered economic oppression, she argues, and an exploitation upon which all of capitalism rests.

As a scholar and activist, Federici is one of a cohort of thinkers who have, for decades, critiqued the way capitalist societies fail to acknowledge or support what she calls “reproductive labor.” She uses this term not simply to refer to having children and raising them; it indicates all the work we do that is sustaining — keeping ourselves and others around us well, fed, safe, clean, cared for, thriving. It’s weeding your garden or making breakfast or helping your elderly grandmother bathe — work that you have to do over and over again, work that seems to erase itself. It is essential work that our economy tends not to acknowledge or compensate. This disregard for reproductive labor, Federici writes, is unjust and unsustainable.

How might this year have looked different had the work we do to care for one another, ourselves and the world around us been valued at a premium? How would the future look different if, as Federici suggests, “we refuse to base our life and our reproduction on the suffering of others,” if “we refuse to see ourselves as separate from them”?

The lockdown showed how the economy exploits women. But Silvia Federici already knew. Read our profile of her at the link in our bio. Photgraphed here by @sharifhamza.

“A commitment to spiritual life necessarily mean “A commitment to spiritual life necessarily means we embrace the eternal principle that love is all, everything, our true destiny. Despite overwhelming pressure to conform to the culture of lovelessness, we still seek to know love. That seeking is itself a manifestation of divine spirit.
Life-threatening nihilism abounds in contemporary culture, crossing the boundaries of race, class, gender, and nationality. At some point it affects all, our lives. Everyone I know is at times brought low by feelings of depression and despair about the state of the world. Whether it is the on-going worldwide presence of violence expressed by the persistence of man-made war, hunger and starvation, the day-to-day reality of violence, the presence of life-threatening diseases that cause the unexpected deaths of friends, comrades, and loved ones, there is much that brings everyone to the brink of despair. Knowing love or the hope of knowing love is the anchor that keeps us from falling into that sea of despair.” 🤍🤍🤍 📸 Bell Hooks Institute #love

Keiko’s podcast Intrinsic is all about the innate value of each individual and the fundamental motivation that drives us. What if we could align this value and motivation with our jobs? What if we could support ourselves and our families doing what we are good at and enjoy doing? How would that affect our society? What would such a society look like? Excited to be talking about art again this week wi Excited to be talking about art again this week with a favorite artist of mine, Rosalie Frankel. She is originally from the Bronx, but has made a home in many fantastic places like Vieques, Puerto Rico and Manhattan. She is currently in Kingston, NY and lives inside a hot cooler. (I have no idea what that means!) She has been making Collage since Kindergarten, setting figures free and featuring them in new stories. Her work is an attempted examination of undeniable confusion inherent in the dichotomy between mirth and melancholy. She does this by exploring the lively stew of relationships as well as emotions. Her art is the vehicle to expose both the glory and struggle of Eros. Ooooooh yeah, gonna get juicy tomorrow. Tune in to @radiokingstonny from 1-3 or catch it later on the pod 🎧 #artist #herstory #eros #collage #iwantwhatshehas #podcasting #talkradio

Book Discussion Time! As I mentioned on the first Book Discussion Time! As I mentioned on the first show of 2021, I was looking for suggestions on books to discuss together, and the ever talented, curious and very wise ✨Rakel Stammer @rakel.makes.mistakes ✨suggested Sylvia Federici's "Caliban and the Witch." You might be thinking, wow, bold choice for a first book, and yes, it is bold and simply perfect. Gathering with friends and strangers to discuss how the female body (and others) have been controlled in order to maintain the status quo of the wealthy class in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. It's music to my ears. The book is a sketch of a theory that we will continue to explore through question and conversation during the live radio show relating it also to the present day struggle of the modern working class. If you want to join in, you can access an online version of the book via the link in our bio or find a copy at your local book store. Rakel and I will be steering the conversation throughout the month of March, Women's History Month, so if you'd like to join in, comment below or send me a DM, and we'll include you in the planning of the discussions. For those of you with many time limitations, we'll do our best to share in advance some of the more specific topics and reading sections so that you can follow along as much as you are able. I've shared other's thoughts on the book in the comments below in an effort to entice you!
