209 Artivists Poet Gold and Suprina “Say Their Names”

Happy New Moon, Lunar New Year, Imbolc and Black History Month!

Today I am honored to welcome The Poet Gold, Artivist, Poet, Author, Teaching Artist and Radio Host, and Suprina, Sculpturist and Artivist. They are collaborators and the Executive Producers of the video “Say Their Names,” premiering February 1st at 7pm eastern. (Poet Gold and Suprina’s interview starts around minute 36)

Like so many Americans The Poet Gold @_poetgold_ and Suprina @suprinasculpture struggled to understand the individual and cultural meaning of the murder of George Floyd. Through ordinary conversation, they found out they were each dealing with this issue in their own arts. Suprina was creating a ghostly and ghastly, ironic representation of the blind goddess of justice, Themis. Poet Gold was writing one of her poelodies addressing American racism and oppression, which ends questioning our individual and communal humanity. Poet Gold asks “What kind of humans are we inside?”

These Hudson Valley friends broadened their original collaboration of a processional performance to producing a video, “Say Their Names,” spanning 500-years of American racism that ends with a hopeful possibility for our future.

The screening is free, but you must RSVP. Afterwards, the audio will be available to download on Bandcamp or at http://www.poetgold.com and a portion of the proceeds will go towards bringing the Soundtrack of Life, an anti-gun violence program by the Sundog Theatre, to the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Our conversation weaves through the subjects of hope, forgiveness, shame, justice, white privilege, and happiness. I hope you will consider supporting and shouting out their work!

And here’s the Art and Social Justice show Suprina mentioned happening through March 13th in Woodstock. Reception: Saturday, February 19 | 4-6pm.

And earlier in the show I shared the New Moon Report from Tanaaz at Forever Conscious and Refinery 29’s Report.

For those of you who want to do something to celebrate Imbolc, this website is really great!

Thanks to Ian Seda from Radio Kingston for engineering today’s show!

Our show music is from Shana Falana !!! We heard these additional songs during the show. Sorry, not boycotting Spotify at this time.

208 Inno Powell from “Abundance Farms”

WELCOME TO SEASON 5!!!!! Today I have the privilege of speaking with Inno Powell, Founder of Abundance Farms. “Their mission is to get fresh organic produce into the homes of BIPOC families in and out of Ulster County, NY. There are so many people living in places where food apartheid plays a big part in our communities and we aren’t even aware of it. We started growing out of public and private spaces in Kingston, NY for our first two seasons. By the end of the second season, we had reached about 80 BIPOC families with most of those families being served on a regular basis with a free vegetable share from the farm. We had over 50 volunteers help out this season from the beginning to the end and I honestly think that they are the reason we were able to keep this going because it takes a village in every sense.” They are embarking on a fundraising campaign to continue and expand this good work which is just one of the reasons I was glad Inno said yes to being a guest on the show. You can follow them on Instagram, @wefeedbipocfree and Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/wefeedbipoc.

Today we hear the powerful story of how farming found Inno, or really, returned to Inno, as something that was always deep in their roots, and all about the journey to Abundance Farms and the good work they are doing there. Plus, Inno shares about faith, the “good book,” finding oneself, the other side of incarceration, midwifery, as well as some poetry about being a single mom. It’s a must listen!

Here’s the farm’s website where you can volunteer, join the CSA or donate.

And here’s the petition on midwifery centers in NY State.

207 Full Moon Release and Ritual with Theresa

It’s a Full Moon and so we’re doing a little Full Moon Release and Ritual on today’s show. I share from the Forever Conscious Full Moon report and a little from Cory Nakasue’s show, The Cosmic Dispatch. Then you can move your body for some physical release with a little (mostly) 80’s dance party. Here’s a link to the Playlist for today’s show, or feel free to use your own inspiring music! This is followed by some reflecting and journaling, working with Kim Kran’s Archetypes, The Tear, The Heart and The Vision. If you don’t want to navigate to the playlist, you can hear the full show straight through via Radio Kingston who has the rights to play the songs!

Here’s the article on choosing your word for the year.

And last but not least, advice for changing your life, be flexible!

206 Spirituality and Politics and Ending Polarization with Marielena Ferrer

It’s the return of our monthly conversation about Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer. Today we take inspiration from an episode of the Dan Harris Podcast 10% Happier about How You Help End Polarization and Inequality and Get Happier Too. It features Robert Putnam and Shaylan Romney Garrett who wrote the book, The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again. Without having read the book, we discuss different elements mentioned on the podcast about the “I, We, I” curve as well as the suggested factors that worked to facilitate change during times of great divide in American history. History doesn’t provide a perfect solution, but it can form the basis for inspiration to help facilitate more communication, collaboration and less division in our present day America. Are your “I” and “We” balanced? Who else is in for giving it a try?

205 Nancy Graham and Louisa Finn “Love and Mohonk Consultations”

Nancy Graham serves on the board of Mohonk Consultations and the arts council of The Lace Mill, where they live in Midtown Kingston. They have worked or volunteered for numerous nonprofits related to social justice, alternative media, theatre, film, and writing. Poet/writer/visual artist under the name Nancy O. Graham; actor under the name Noa Graham. Her most recent theatre project was Orchid Receipt Service, starring Asia Kate Dillon, at Theater MITU580 in Brooklyn, pre-pandemic. Most recent film project is a short called Elegy for a Glacier, about an environmental activist and her glaciologist daughter forced to face off about the construction of a ski resort in the Rockies.

Louisa Finn is a  Hudson Valley native, whose mother was a member of the Quaker Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House, and father a Russian Jewish pianist from the Bronx.  She has spent her life thus far actively engaged in learning what it is to be human and to be herself.  She works as a Speech/Language Pathologist and Reading Tutor, and clinical instructor at SUNY New Paltz.  She is on the Board of Mohonk Consultations, where she serves as Administrative Coordinator, and Sky Lake Shambhala Center Buddhist Retreat.  She writes poetry, and is creating a forest garden in her front yard.

Today we’re talking about Love and a myriad of related and thought provoking subjects. Nancy and Louisa share about their first memories of love and how they relate to the word which takes us into the realm of spiritual materialism, caring for others, and being a mother.  The show is inspired by bell hooks and her writings on love and self love/self worth so we dive into self-love as Louisa and Nancy share their own process to love themselves better as well as how self-love relates to caring for others and being a woman. We then leave the personal towards the end of the show to talk about the public and how the work of Mohonk Consultations is cultivating love in its own way, bringing folks together to collaborate, lifting voices, and caring for land and others. We leave you with a call for your own definition or thoughts on Love.  bell hooks herself seemed to have a few, “love is the action we take on behalf of our own or another’s spiritual growth…” “love is a combination of trust, commitment, care, respect, knowledge and responsibility…” So, what say you?

204 Sari Botton and Carolita Johnson “Oldster Magazine”

It’s the return of Sari Botton and Carolita Johnson who were last guests on the same show back in April 2018!

Sari Botton is a writer, editor and teacher living in Kingston, NY. She is the editor of the award-winning anthology Goodbye to All That: Writers on Loving and Leaving NY and its New York Times-Bestselling follow-up, Never Can Say Goodbye: Writers on Their Unshakable Love for NY. Sari publishes three newsletters: her newest endeavor Oldster Magazine, as well as Adventures in “Journalism,” and Memoir Monday. Her work has appeared in the New York TimesNew York Magazine, the Village VoiceHarper’s BazaarMarie ClaireMore, and the Rumpus, plus other publications and anthologies. She is a contributing editor and leads essay writing and anthology editing at Catapult and is an adjunct in the MFA program at Bay Path University. Her memoir-in-essays, And You May Find Yourself… will be published by Heliotrope in June, 2022. Sari is the former Essays Editor for Longreads and hopes to one day reopen her co-working space for writers, Kingston Writers’ Studio.

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be a gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. Her cartoons appear in the new yorker magazine, and in the books: the rejection collection 1, and the rejection collection 2, and sex and sensibility, and she’s illustrated the books the new vampire’s handbook, and women on food. Carolita is also a writer who has contributed to https://longreads.com/author/carolita/, has an essay in the 2021 reprint of Sari Botton’s, goodbye to all that as well as a recent piece in Oldster Magazine on the inner workings of a woman’s body.

We start out by checking in with what’s new with these two since they were last on the show, and then get into a thought provoking conversation based in the essence of Oldster Mag, “perspectives on the joys and frustrations on getting older – at any stage of life.” This means we talk about the aging woman’s body, how it’s largely ignored by the medical industry, ageism, how these two feel about being 56, what’s good about it and what’s not so good about it. Plus they make some reading recommendations that I’ve already started on myself!

Here’s a link to the 10% Happier Podcast I mentioned about ending polarization and the “I, We, I” curve that we can all work to shift.

Here’s a link to the Joan Didion essay, “Goodbye to All That.

203 The Caring Majority and Herstorical Female Figures

Today I start out the show talking about Fair Pay for Home Care and the work of the Caring Majority Rising. They do such important work to raise awareness of the unfair labor practices for home care workers and also the impact the shortage of these workers has on those who need the care. There’s a big push here in NY State to increase their wages amongst other initiatives, and I am asking you to help support them!

Here’s the latest and greatest for ways you can get involved!

  • Call Governor Hochul! And let us know how your call goes!
    • Dial: 518-474-8390
    • Sample Script: Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m reaching out to ask Governor Hochul to include Fair Pay for Home Care (S5374/A6329) in next year’s Executive budget! Fair Pay 4 Home Care is important to me because [XXXX]. Because NY pays poverty wages to home care workers, our state is the epicenter of a home care workforce shortage–forcing disabled people and older adults into nursing homes because they can’t recruit the workers they need to live at home.  Can we count on Gov Hochul to invest in women by including Fair Pay 4 Home Care in the executive budget? Thank you!
    • Let us know how your call went here!
  • It’s never too late to call, tweet and write letters to the Governor and Assembly and Senate leaders about Fair Pay! Here is our action toolkitIf you are getting together with your family or friends over the holidays, get them involved too! And send a message to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins asking them to pass the proposed legislation to increase wages to 150% of minimum wage.
  • Tues, Dec 21 at 5PM: End-of-Year Hudson Valley Regional Meeting! If you’re based in the Hudson Valley, we have an end-of-year celebratory meeting on ZOOM. RSVP here!
  • Tues, Dec 21 at 6PM: Phone banking Arizona and West Virginia voters for Build Back Better! Billions in federal funding for home care are still on the line in Build Back Better. It is currently held up in the US Senate by Senator Manchin and Sinema. On Tuesday next week we are joining our partners at 1199 SEIU to phone bank voters in Arizona and West Virginia, asking for them to call Manchin and Sinema to urge them to move forward with Build Back Better. RSVP here.
  • Monday, Jan 3 from 6-8PM: Phone banking for Fair Pay! We will kick off the new year by calling our most active leaders and inviting them to join us for crucial actions coming up in January. This is the best kind of phone-banking, you won’t want to miss! RSVP here.
  • Wed, Jan 5, TIME TBA: State of The State Watch Party! The Governor will be giving her State of The State address highlighting her priorities for New York and we want to be there together on ZOOM to witness and respond. As soon as we know the exact time, we will let you know! This will be in place of our usual 1st Wednesday meeting!
  • Wed, Jan 12 at [5:30]PM: Virtual Training on the In’s and Outs of the Budget with Advocacy Institute! As we head into an intense budget season, we have a very special training from budget expert David Ng from the Advocacy Institute. RSVP here.

OK, for the rest of the show I read from one of my favorite women who definitely has what I want in so many ways.  Maria Popova‘s lengthy yet delightful Figuring highlights the life and work of several truly inspiring women. If you like what you hear, then you should definitely pick it up for some perfect Winter hibernation reading.

202 “Spirituality and Politics” with Marielena Ferrer

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer and our monthly conversation inspired by Espiritualidad y Politica, which ponders ideas related to society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace. We talk about the practical implications of this and other related topics. Today we discuss human nature and the spirit, energy and matter, and separateness and oneness.

Mariaelena is an artist and the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization.

201 Isis Benitez “I’m Worthy”

On today’s show I share my very real conversation with Isis Benitez, a 22 year old woman who is struggling with loving her body for how it looks. She has struggled time and time again with thinking that she is “fat” (a term she uses). Benitez’s biggest struggle is when she tries to love herself so much but thinks her stomach is the problem. She sees herself as being a big girl, and therefore she made the Instagram account called @_im.worthy_ to help her in this process. She wants to be able to be her 100% authentic self and not be ashamed of her body. With the body image struggle, Benitez also struggles with the fear of saying “No” to others and letting other people down. A lot of this has to do with how society sees Women in America and the expectations and pressure to have to look and act a certain way. Now Isis Benitez is able to speak out on what is truly affecting her with loving herself and loving being a woman.

200 Annette Simmons and Areva Martin “Authors and Thought Leaders”

Today the show begins with a conversation with Annette Simmons, a keynote speaker, consultant, and author of four books, including The Story Factor, which is listed in The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. She received a business degree from Louisiana State University, went on to spend ten years in Australia in international business, then received an M.Ed. from North Carolina State University, before founded Group Process Consulting in 1996. Her latest book is titled, Drinking from a Different Well: How Women’s Stories Change What Power Means in Action. Learn more at her book’s website. Today Annette shares her thoughts on the different narrative men and women have around power, how women can come to trust their own instinct, how to resist gaslighting, how women can insist on their own narrative and stick to it, why moral emotions are so important and lots more. I read her book cover to cover in about 1 DAY, so I highly recommend!

In the second half of the show I get to speak with Areva Martin, an award-winning civil rights attorney, advocate, social issues commentator, talk show host, and producer. A CNN legal analyst and Harvard Law School graduate, Martin founded Martin & Martin, LLP, a Los Angeles-based civil rights firm, and is the CEO of Butterflly Health, Inc., a mental health technology company. A best-selling author, Martin has dedicated her fourth book, Awakening: Ladies, Leadership, and the Lies We’ve Been Told, to helping women worldwide recognize, own, and assert their limitless power. Today Areva shares some of her own personal story as it relates to gender inequality, what she’s learned by listening to the stories of other women, the lies that women have been told that have held them back, and how to beat a system that’s (still) rigged against women.
