#125 Anrika Colbourne of “One N Only Cakes”

Anrika Colbourne got her start at Ulster County Boces simply by being in the Culinary program, which opened a door to a whole new world! She later graduated from Johnson & Wales University where she was able to experience a myriad of new elements of the pastry world. She later studied in Peru and Canada, while she working in resorts, restaurants, and as a pastry instructor. From interning at Bobby Flay’s restaurant, to working at small bakeries (sometimes 2-3 at a time), to the transition into the corporate world as an industrial pastry chef, her love always lied with cakes. She started One N Only Cakes as a home-based establishment created in Kingston, New York in 2013.Being a first-generation American to Caribbean parents, Anrika is a vibrant, passionate, innovative pastry chef with a strong Caribbean background, which is a big influence in her baking. Her love of flavor reflects in her baking with a somewhat modern style. She prides herself on her quality, original flavors and thinking of something new and creative with every request.  After years of traveling up and down the east coast of South America, central Canada, and the east coast of America, Anrika is finally back home where it all started. One N Only Cakes offers a wide array of tiered and sculpted cakes for weddings, baby showers, birthdays and so much more!

We talk about how she got into and through culinary school, her various jobs and travels, landing back in Kingston to start One N Only Cakes, COVID quarantine, losing her grandfather, Love Slices, self care and overcoming self doubt!

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

#124 Juneteenth with Jessieca McNabb and Monique Tinsley and Multicultural Festival with Sarah Litvin and Caprice Rouge members Laura Crimmins, Karen Levine and Elena Erber

Today, we’re talking Black Lives Matter, multicultural community and UNITY!

Joining me in the first hour is Jessieca McNabb, comedian, co-host of Harambee Radio,No One Like You and oft guest on My Kingston Kids on Radio Kingston… and an active member of the Harambee Coalition, a mid-Hudson valley coalition that supports and promotes the strength of our community through cultural and educational events that enriches the lives of youth and adults. You can also catch Jessieca’s last appearance on “i want what SHE has” Episode #106, from February 5, 2020.

Joining Jessieca is Monique Tinsley, Jessieca’s “day 1,” who is also a vital member of the Harambee Coalition, working with Jessieca on initiatives to protect and restore the African Burial Ground on Pine Street and the upcoming online Juneteenth Celebration taking place online this Saturday from 1-4pm.

The Juneteenth holiday is considered the “longest running African-American holiday”[22] and has been called “America’s second Independence Day”. This Saturday’s Celebration will take place live on Harambee’s Facebook page to celebrate and remember the African-American Independence from slavery in America. This online festival will entertain, encourage and educate guests on parts of the African-American experience. This is a family friendly event which will include song, dance, spoken word, history, talk and more from various participants at locations throughout Kingston. This event is in loving Memory of Pastor Paul Worthington.

Jessieca and Monique speak with me about the Black Lives Matter protests, Juneteenth, the African Burial Ground and the importance of self care. Words they shared that I want to amplify are the need for white people to really pause regularly and soak up the reality of the black experience in the past few hundred years so that we don’t stop the pressure until there’s real equality and appreciation for black lives.

In the second half of the show I am joined by Sarah Litvin, PhD., Director of the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History to talk about the Multicultural Festival that is happening online now. The online festival website is the host to rich content from our diverse history and community; performances, cooking instructional videos, greetings in various languages, a list of our diverse restaurant scene and a community quilt.

Joining Sarah are three members from the band, Caprice Rouge, Laura Crimmins, Karen Levine, and Elena Erber, who are participating performers in this year’s online festival.

Caprice Rouge is an acoustic ensemble from the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State playing Balkan, Roma-Gypsy and Klezmer dance tunes! Performing on traditional instruments including accordion, violin, bouzouki, gypsy jazz guitar, clarinet, and percussion, the band is happy to play for dancers, revelers, and listeners at taverns and cafes, festivals and farmers’ markets, at weddings and other celebrations!

Stay tuned for live performances by the band once we’re safe for social distancing, and in the meantime, join in the online festival which will continue to have more content added to it in the coming weeks!

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from Caprice Rouge and Shana Falana.

Today I am joined by two phenomenal women from Raising HOPE!

Amy Summers, Program Director for Raising HOPE. She is responsible for the overall coordination and organization of the Raising Hope administrative and operational components, and programmatic components as well as recruitment. She was the former Director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters satellite program at Amherst College where she interviewed and matched “Bigs” with “Littles”, supervised an onsite program, planned and ran program events, and provided support and trainings for program participants. She is also an experienced facilitator of women’s empowerment workshops, meditation and stress reduction classes, and conscious communication counseling, all of which she culls from to create, facilitate and coordinate programming & workshops for Raising HOPE participants. She has a degree in Women’s Studies with a concentration in Workshop Development and experience as an entrepreneur, as the former owner of Transformations Workshop Center and Gallery in Amherst MA, and currently operating Aquoga Aquatic exercise and adapted yoga classes in Ulster County.

AND

Tasha Ortloff who is the Raising Hope Assistant Program Director who brings administrative, operations, marketing, advocacy, technology, and interpersonal skills to Raising HOPE. As someone who attained her college degree while working, and being the single parent of two children, she knows first-hand the difficulty of achieving educational and career goals in the face of challenges. She is a Board Member for Health Care is a Human Right, and prior to her work at Raising HOPE, she was the Director of Operations and Development at the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of NY.

Raising HOPE, is a women’s mentoring women program through the United Way of Ulster County whose vision is to inspire a community of women to mobilize their time, talent, and financial resources to help other women achieve their potential. They offer H-O-P-E, Help, Opportunity, Passion and Empowerment to support women on their journey to self-sufficiency. Woman-to-woman mentoring, where a mentor supports, encourages and guides a mentee has an immensely powerful impact on the mentee’s ability to achieve her academic and professional goals. In short, having someone believe in you can make all the difference.

Raising HOPE serves women 18+ who want to achieve personal, educational, or vocational goals and seek support to reach them. Their Mentees have a broad range of life experiences, but they all have one thing in common: a desire to improve their lives, and those of their families, by making a commitment to their Mentors – and themselves – to work hard to achieve their goals.

They welcome all women 30+ who have life experience they’d like to share and desire to help others, to consider becoming a Mentor.

Their Mentors play a number of roles including:
-Partnering to achieve personal, educational, or vocational goals.
-Being a sounding board about choices and priorities.
-Providing feedback in communication and life skills.
-Motivating when encouragement is needed.

Raising HOPE offers regular online classes including Motivational Mondays which you can learn more about via their Facebook Page. They are accepting mentee applications now for a new matching that will take place this Fall, and stay tuned for info on their Celebration of HOPE event taking place this October, 16, 2020!

#122 “The Worst Years” Podcast with Sabine, Noelle and Maeve

Today I have the honor of playing an interview I did with the three girls who are the hosts of The Worst Years podcast.

Maeve is an only child with two moms and a dog named Brooklyn. She lived in Brooklyn, NY, until she was eight (hence the name of her dog). This summer, she will turn 11. Maeve is a competitive gymnast and plays clarinet. Her favorite subjects in school are writing, reading, science, art, and anything related to music. Maeve loves hiking and biking and everything outdoors. She’s been going to Wild Earth since she was five. When she grows up, she wants to be an interior designer.

Sabine is the middle child of a big family that lives in a three-generational household. She plays cello and piano and will be 11 this summer. She wants to be a mathematician for NASA when she grows up, so she can study the stars. She became a vegetarian when she saw a billboard about animal rights. When asked what’s her favorite thing to do, she says, “Eat. Sleep. Play. Repeat.”

Noelle at age 10 3/4 is the youngest of two children and lives happily between her amicably split parents. Noelle loves reading and writing. She likes cats, playing the ukulele, comedy, and dislikes the color chartreuse. Noelle sings and plays string bass, and thrives on karaoke in her spare time. Bitten by the theater bug last year in the high school production of Matilda, she has developed a love of the stage, and when she grows up, Noelle wants to be an actor on Broadway!

We learn about the making of their podcast, middle school, their likes and dislikes and life during quarantine!

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ AND the girls’ suggestions: “Joke” by Brandi Carlile, “Would You Be So Kind” by Dodie, and “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish
