December 2019 – i want what SHE has

#100 “Goddesses” with Musician & Bodyworker, Natasha Althouse + Artist, Entrepreneur and Community Builder, Stephanie Diamond

Episode #100!!!! Made it to triple digits!

Today’s special guests are the epitome of the feminine… creative, artistic, talented, nurturing, healing, and mystical. What a pleasure it is to share their stories.

My first guest, Natasha Althouse@musicbynatasha, is a musician, vocalist, wife, mom and holistic bodyworker whose healing practice focuses on postural imbalances, stress induced tension, injury care, and digestive and reproductive health. I met Natasha a few years ago for Mayan Abdominal Massage work and was blown away by the profound nature of what she does, blending massage, sound and energy work together in a very powerful way. We get to chat about life, how and why she makes music, the unique nature of Mayan Abdominal Massage, her connection to Ixchel and so much more. She’s in the studio NOW working on an album which she expects to be birthed into the world sometime in 2020. She even gifts us with a little song during the interview. I cry…again.

Today’s second guest is the multi-dimensional Stephanie Diamond, Artist, Entrepreneur and Community-Builder. She founded Listings Project — listings and other opportunities geared towards artists and creatives — 17 years ago and talks about how it has transformed over the years into a legit community building business! She also facilitates 5-Rhythms and explains how the nature of the experience of dancing 5-Rhythms so closely mirrors the reality of life. Before doing any of those things, Stephanie was and always has been an artist, creating, largely around community. Her Art has been exhibited at MoMA, MASS MoCA, MoMA/P.S. 1, Studio Museum in Harlem, Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Project Row Houses, Philadelphia Mural Arts, SculptureCenter, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, Lithuania, to name a few. We talk about all this, plus the fact that she does not have a smart phone! I want what she doesn’t have!!!

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas at Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/

#99 “Eating and Speaking from the Heart” with Nutritionist Gabriela Friedman and NVC Facilitator Lyndsey Harrington

My first guest today is Gabriela Friedman.  Originally from Brazil, @gabriela_friedman has taken some pretty bold steps in her life to bring her to where she is today, a Mom, a personal trainer, and a nutritionist based in the Hudson Valley. From her own journey Gabriela discovered how a lifestyle built around healthy living and physical fitness could empower, build confidence and discipline, and add overall happiness to one’s life. Her ultimate goal is to support and motivate her clients to develop habits to live a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and exercise.

She shares about her childhood and how she came to the US in a rather unplanned way, about starting a formal path in nutrition following up on the seed that was planted by her mother early on and how she works to educate her children about how to eat to support good health. Gabriela’s philosophy is largely moderation. It’s not about restricting, but rather eating with color (not food coloring!) and vibrancy. Being active and healthy is part of Gabriela’s everyday life. My favorite advice from her is “it’s not about what you eat between Thanksgiving and New Year’s that matters, it’s what you eat from New Year’s to Thanksgiving!”

Here are the two food and eating resources I mentioned, but there are so many more! A fascinating approach to mindful eating Ram Dass, Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein and Christy Harrison, Food Psych podcast.

Today’s second guest is Lyndsey Harrington. Hailing from Santa Barbara by way of Melbourne, Australia, Lyndsey has been dedicated to Nonviolent Communication since she first encountered it in 2012. Growing up with a deep love for meditation and alternative healing, she found herself yearning for a practice that could bridge the sense of loving unity she felt with the world during her meditations and maintaining that sense of connection in her everyday human life. For her, Nonviolent Communication is that bridge.

She shares how in 2012, while living in Brooklyn, Lyndsey encountered Marshall Rosenberg’s book “Nonviolent Communication” at the request of a co-living space and all who occupied it together. She was so impressed with how she observed her flat mates communicating and relating to one another that she dove in deeper. In 2015, she began studying with the New York Center for Nonviolent Communication and then, in 2017, joined their team as a workshop facilitator/trainer. She has facilitated several NYCNVC intensives, supported the organization as a course coordinator, and has led and co-led NVC practice groups in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley where she now resides.

Lyndsey shares a bit about NVC walking us through some of the main concepts about using feelings language, slowing down, taking time to have a conversation with curiosity, rather than a confrontation, all which leads to more harmony and a meeting of everyone’s needs.  It’s largely a practice in rewiring the brain from habitual responses and re-educating how we’re trained about our own needs and the needs of others.  We all really want the same things so remember that when you’re sitting at the dinner table with your beloved family members. There’s so much practical information in our conversation, so tune in for some tips on how to move through a situation that may be triggering using principals of NVC. Hint, “strike while the iron is cool.”

#98 “Artists and Activists” Helene Richman + Judith “Zelda” Miller

My first guest today is Helene Richman, a mom, wife, artist and creative force behind @brandhelene (Twitter, Facebook) who’s been working with a group of girl entrepreneurs, the Start Up Squad, at the Hodge Center in Kingston, NY. She’s been helping them learn about and build a business. I got to hang out with the girls a few weeks ago and talk about how to create their own radio show. After some prep and a little training, they all got to interview one another. I play some snippets of their interviews during today’s show as well as talk about what the girls have done in the program. After meeting with several entrepreneurs in the area the girls settled in on t-shirts for their business which they will debut at @madeinkingstonny this Thursday! Helene also shares about her corporate business experience and how she’s transferring that in to more service oriented roles. This year she organized the Hudson Valley Design Collective, (Facebook) focusing on upcycling used tectiles in an effort to help shift the waste in the clothing business. The Collective will also be at Made in Kingston along with Helene’s other endeavor with BlocArt, selling upcycled wood made by living wage workers in South Africa. No wonder this lady has another cold!

Next up is Zelda aka Judith Z. Miller @artistsoulspeaks an artist, actor, aspiring shaman and healer who’s talking about her work-in-progress solo show, Que Será, Será: A Life’s Journey of Sexual Orientation & Gender Expression. This multi-media show chronicles the joys and challenges of navigating non-binary Queerness from childhood in the 1950’s to adulthood. Zelda will be performing a work-in-progress production of the show on December 7 @ 8:30 pm & December 8 @ 3 pm at the @lgbtqcenter here in Kingston. Zelda shares about how she got into theater, some of the more powerful experiences she’s had like performing pieces in a women’s prison in Virginia, or a short piece that helped her heal her younger self who was forced to wear dresses against her wishes. Zelda is a gifted, open-hearted, magical and mystical being who has stories to share that are guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and most definitely think! If you can’t get to her live performance, Radio Kingston will be live streaming the Sunday show from their Facebook page which you can view any time ->->-> Check it out!!!
