234 “Childfree by Choice” with Therese Shechter and LeNora Faye

It’s the return of Therese Shechter, Founder of Trixie Films, Author, Speaker and Director of the compelling documentary film, My So-Called Selfish Life, and she’s brought with her LeNora Faye, a childfree lifestyle advocate, speaker, and moderator who creates global platforms, both public and private, for people who are choosing not to have, birth, or raise children. She is a co-host of the international podcast and web series, Childfree Girls and a co-founder of Childfree Convention, where she serves as PR manager and co-moderator. 

The Childfree Convention is a free, two-day virtual event to connect childfree people all over the world, where childfree people and their allies can expand their knowledge about the childfree lifestyle and explore important topics in the childfree community.

The convention is FREE to watch and open to all who want to be part of the childfree conversation.

The panels will explore topics of interest to the childfree community such as the childfree experience in different world cultures, Pronatalism, Antinatalism, Defining Family, Childfree Guys, Childfree LGBTQ+, Sterilization, Childfree F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence Retire Early), Childfree 60+, and more.

The Childfree Convention is happening July 30-31 and August 1st is International Child Free Day so we’re celebrating with them and sharing their good work with you. Whether you identify as Child Free, Child Less or none of the above, this is an important conversation in changing the narrative on womanhood and disempowering the patriarchy.

233 Shauna Kanter “Summer Youth Workshop – Voice Theatre”

Shauna Kanter has taught CNN announcers, as well as speakers and singers of all backgrounds for over thirty years; from teachers, lawyers, Broadway actors, and Royal Shakespeare Company members, to folks who just cringe at the sound of their own voice. She has served as a New York Foundation for the Arts mentor for immigrant artists and is the Artistic Director of Voice Theatre in NYC and Kingston, NY.

She has taught voice and served on the faculty of: NYU Tisch School of the Arts, T. Schreiber Studio and The Stella Adler Studio. She has been a Guest Artist at: Williams College, Hardin Simmons College, Columbia Festival of the Arts, Bowdoin College and Louisiana Tech among many others. In the UK, she taught at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Queen Margaret College, Middlesex University, Mountview Academy, the Healing Arts and in London’s West End at the Drill Hall. In Berlin at the Pfefferwerk Centre and at Ernst Busch Schauspielkunst. In the Middle East at the Cameri Theatre, Israel and Ashtar Theatre, Palestine.

Shauna studied the Linklater technique with Kristin Linklater and holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase and a certificate in directing from The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol, UK. Her plays have been performed in the US, UK, Germany, France and the Middle East. She has directed over 40 productions on four continents. Voice and Speech Warm-Up by Shauna Kanter is published by Drama Books. Her plays have been published by the University of Nebraska and she is featured in Stage Warriors published by Cune Press.

Today Shauna shares the details about the upcoming Summer Youth Workshop taking place August 1-8, 2022 at ASK in Kingston. We also get to speak about Shauna’s background in theater and as an actor and how she transitioned to directing including some of the important plays she’s worked on over the years and what Voice Theatre is up to these days. Their work includes supporting undocumented and unaccompanied young men in Kingston to tell their stories to Kingston High Schoolers, facilitating a connection and a deeper understanding of the stories of others. Shauna and I also discuss the voice in general and the power it has to convey and also to heal when our voices have been restricted or suppressed during our lifetimes. It’s powerful work that I hope you’ll tune in for!

232 “Spirituality and Politics” with Marielena Ferrer – Separation of Church and State

It’s the second Mo(o)nday of the Month and that means the return of Marielena to talk Spirituality and Politics. Marielena Ferrer is a socially engaged visual artist who serves as the chair of the Kingston City Arts  Commission. She also chairs the Alianza Cultural de Kingston, an advisory board for the promotion,  connection and celebration of the arts and cultures of the diverse Hispanic communities, and is the Executive Director of Humanamente, a diversity and inclusion consulting organization. 

Today we talk about the separation of Church and State, or the lack thereof.

Her upcoming artist residency with interactive art making is running from July 15-August 20 at WAAM and then she’ll be exhibiting August 20–September 11.

Artist Marielena Ferrer will have a six-week residency and interactive project from July 15–August 20 in the YES gallery, which Ferrer will use as a studio space. Ferrer will lead a series of 30-minute workshops that invite visitors to engage in collective artmaking. While creating paper butterflies with the artist, visitors will discuss the ideas that Ferrer’s work probes, including the monarch butterfly migration quest, its symbolic connection to migrant children at the U.S.-Mexican border, the Trump-Pence administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy and the negative consequences of the policy on the health and well-being of immigrant and U.S. citizens alike. A subsequent installation of the artist’s paper butterflies will be on view from August–September 11 in the same gallery.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS Opening Reception Saturday, July 16, 4-6pm WAAM will host an opening reception to celebrate the beginning of the artist residency and a new round of exhibitions throughout WAAM’s galleries.

Artist Talk Saturday, August 20th, 3-4pm Marielena Ferrer will discuss her work and residency in a roundtable conversation.

WORKSHOPS A series of workshops with Marielena Ferrer will be offered on a drop-in basis throughout WAAM’s open hours during the designated weekends below. Workshops are free, designed for people of all ages, and no reservations are required.

Saturday, July 16, 4-6pm Opening Weekend: To begin her residency at WAAM, Ferrer will invite visitors to come to the YES gallery and learn about her process and project.

Friday, July 22–Sunday, July 24, 12-5pm Upstate Art Weekend Throughout Upstate Art Weekend, which celebrates the cultural vibrancy of upstate New York, Ferrer will lead 30-minute workshops in which visitors learn to create paper butterflies. Visitors will also have the opportunity to chat with Ferrer and discuss the conceptual underpinnings of her work.

Saturday, July 30, 12-5pm Focus on Families Visitors will learn about butterfly migration and make butterflies for the WAAM installation. Drawing materials will also be available for kids and families to draw and explore WAAM exhibitions.

Saturday, August 6, 12-5pm Installation Day The full exhibition of Ferrer’s butterflies will be installed in the YES gallery, as visitors are invited to join the artist in exploring human and animal migration and the importance of art and activism.

231 The Freedom Show – Life and Liberty of the Constitution

It’s the 4th of July which means it’s my old roomie and pal Mary’s Birthday. Now that’s worth celebrating!!!

Today I teach Con Law 101. Okay, not really, but I wanted to deepen my understanding of the 14th Amendment which I haven’t thought about in detail since law school. While the language, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws,” seems straight forward to me as it relates to body autonomy, the Supreme Court has battled over the concept of liberty and the right to privacy for decades. I wanted to understand why. I enter the rabbit hole to the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbs and end with my unfortunate and cynical conclusion that the court interprets the laws the way it wants to. 

Admittedly, it’s not an easy task wrangling the different thoughts and opinions from over the years, but truthfully I don’t know why we are turning to precedent that existed when women had no official rights under the constitution. That being said, there is plenty of common law to show that abortion was not criminalized prior to the quickening stage, and that often abortion was criminalized to protect the life of the mother because abortion practices were quite dangerous. I also don’t understand why the issue at hand isn’t a women’s right to body autonomy and to make personal and private health decisions. I can only conclude it’s because if that was the “right” that was to be reviewed and balanced against a State’s interest, the Court would be hard pressed to come to the same decision. There was zero consideration, review, analysis or balancing of a woman’s interest in her health as it relates to the often life threatening and nearly always life changing state of being pregnant. We’ve officially returned to the dark ages.
