#97 “Keeping it Local” with Designer Sylvia Grieser, Jewelry Maker Rebecca Peacock, Artist Susie Ximenez & Cider Maker Kimberly Kae

Keeping it LOCAL! Look around you, support your friends and neighbors, buy local when you are able to! Joining me today live from Anderst on North Front Street, in Kingston, NY are a group of local ladies making things and doing things in the Hudson Valley. I did my best to edit out some of the technical hiccups we experienced with our remote broadcast so conversation does jump around a bit. Thanks ladies for joining in our talk!

Sylvia Grieser is an internationally renowned fashion stylist, costume designer and consultant for celebrities, films and design houses. After graduating with a Masters Degree in Fashion and Fine Art in Germany, she was invited to work for German Vogue, which led her to New York and a future in the Fashion and Advertising world. Celebrities like Diana Krall, Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald often consult her to style their appearances on prominent Award Shows or Album Covers. She has contributed to magazines like GQ, Details, Surface, VOGUE Goielli and VOGUE Pelle as well as MEN’S HEALTH, to name a few. On top of all that, she has created ANDERST@anderstny her boutique clothing line and store front located at 54 North Front Street in Kingston, NY,

Rebeccas Peacock  @rebecca_peacock is a fine jewelry maker based in the Catskill Mountains of upstate NY. According to the lore, she was raised by wolves in the woods of the Catskill Mountains only to be tamed by ten years in the California salt air. She is now back in the Hudson Valley, crafting her gorgeous pieces, renovating a 19th century farmhouse, and womaning her store front in Uptown Kingston, NY. Rebecca tells us a bit about the process of making jewelry, about why keeping the local community in mind when designing and selling is important as well as where she gets her inspiration from.

Kimberly Kae from Metal House Cider stopped by to talk about the process of making cider from tree to label and how pruning is her favorite part of the process because she gets to spend time with the trees. They just announced that they will be donating $1 per bottle sold on all their 2017 vintages toward the Interpretive Center being build on the reclaimed African burial grounds in Kingston, NY. Thanks Metal House Cider!

Midway through Susie Ximenez from Latinx Project joined our conversation. Latinx seeks to promote Latinx art and culture in the Hudson Valley. They invest in creative work that highlights the complexity, nuance, and beauty of communities who are often rendered criminal or invisible.  Art has the power to move audiences in ways that movement messaging can’t—through new narratives that relate to and transform their own experiences. Latinx is hosting it’s second annual Mercadito on Nov. 30th from 10-3 at BSP Kingston. This is more than just a market, this is an effort to bring the POC community of Hudson Valley together and empower makers of color – to reclaim our crafts and empower our community to shop consciously.

Lucky for us, the wise and caring, Celina Pipman, LCSW, also stopped by to join in the conversation. We all got to talk about working collaboratively with other women, how community is important to us, what we get from community and what we need from community, in addition to how we are taking care of ourselves.

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken, host of Freedom Highway, and Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org. With special help from Perla Aroyo Darnell.

#96 “Sit & Spin and Physiologus” with artists, Sophi Kravitz + Jicky Schnee

Sort of speechless about the body of work that these women have created. Enjoy!

Sophi Kravitz is an artist and electronic engineer who’s always been fascinated with people, people she already knows and strangers alike. She believes that incorporating public art into a shared experience can be a strong conduit to the acceptance of the human next to you. She often collaborates as part of a larger collective as the construction of the work is highly technical, relying on the strength of both her background and love of bringing people together on collaborations. She believes in the simple magic of theatrical storytelling and works with classical sculpture, metal, code, and electronics to create beautiful playthings. Sophi shares her journey into making art and objects of play from her early childhood, to sculpture, electronic engineering, puppet making and most recently Hackaday, the company she now works for which serves up “Fresh Hacks Every Day” from around the Internet. Her previous collaborative art projects are inventive and impressive, and she shares how recently she’s begun making them meaningful in a deeper way by considering visitors’ reaction to current events to create deeper thoughts about the human experience. Check out her website for the elaborate and inspiring list of art she co-created.

Jicky Schnee is a mother, artist, actor and model, who despite the many different forms that it takes, is seeking to depict and understand authenticity and purity through her art. Jicky shares about her mother really helped to move her forward in life and career by pushing her to NYC and to connect with a key photographer boosting her modeling career. Jicky lost her mother when she was just 25 so we speak a bit about the uniqueness of the mother/daughter relationship and how she healed from the deep grief of losing her mother. Jicky’s interest in authenticity surfaces in many ways including our conversation about social media and the selfie phenomenon which seemingly places value on how people view us rather than how we value who and what we are. This aligns with Jicky’s new-ish appreciation of Crone Culture vs. Youth Culture, and she’s choosing to see and value the wisdom of those who’ve come before her over the priorities and actions of the youth which so often manifests in social media. We squeeze a lot into this hour including the physical and psychological challenges of acting, working with and admiring Joaquin Phoenix, studying psychology, raising daughters, and wanting to experience “the other side,” see her “Physiologus” work for reference.

There’s just not enough time in a two hour show I say! Hopefully these ladies will come back again. We have some unfinished conversation to be had.

#95 “Real Beauty” with Charise Isis, Photographer + Ellen Marshall, Oncology Support + Jeanie Edwards, Breast Cancer Survivor

Hey listeners! Thanks for tuning in for today’s special show. I wanted to share that for the first 9-10 minutes I talk about a healing event that’s happening on Nov. 23rd at the idea garden in Kingston, NY. It’s something I’ve organized as a result of the women on the show today and the work that they do. If you aren’t local or interested, you can skip ahead. For those of you interested, on Nov. 23rd from [12:30]-2 there will be a free workshop to learn how to give Reiki to yourself and then from 2-4 healers will be offering their services at no charge to those affected by cancer. Please check the event details for more information and if you would like to participate in the workshop portion of the day, please RSVP to love@anahatakingston.com

Ok so special bonus, around minute [9:50] you get to hear an exclusive new Lady Moon & the Eclipse single, “Le Petit Prince.” The song hasn’t been released yet, but go check the gorgeous video if you want to hear it again!

Around minute [15:45] I begin my conversation with these amazing women..

Ellen Marshall, MS., LCSW-R, OSW-C. Oncology Social Worker and Director of the Oncology Support Program of HealthAlliance Hospital/WMC Health. Ellen shares about how the program was started and what they offer the community, free of charge, such as an integrative support group, a group that talks about “what really matters” when diagnosed with metastatic cancer, weekly memoir writing, weekly creative arts groups, a women’s breast cancer support group, younger women’s breast cancer support group, ovarian cancer support group, caregiver support group, men’s support group, and a myriad of wellness programs that are open to everyone. If you want to learn more about their offerings, you can call them at 845-339-2071, email oncology.support@hvhc.org or stop by at 80 Mary’s Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401.

Charise Isis is a photographer of women, photographing beauty beyond her wildest dreams.  Her portraiture empowers women by allowing them to be vulnerable, present, and helping them to connect with their deeply sensual and powerful selves.  Ten years ago she began The Grace Project. “Grace” is a series of portraits of women capturing the courage, beauty and grace of those who have had mastectomy surgery as a result of breast cancer. Her work allows each of her subjects a transformative experience, giving them permission to step into self acceptance and the opportunity to share the story of the scars that have been written on their body. The ultimate goal of the Grace project is to photograph 800 portraits, the approximate number of new breast cancer diagnosis in the U.S. every day. Thus far, Charise has photographed nearly 400 portraits towards this goal. The Grace Project exhibition “Broken is Still Beautiful” will be on display at the Idea Garden in Kingston, New York on weekends until Nov. 23 when they’ll be celebrating with a closing party from 4-7pm.

Jeanne Edwards is a Code Enforcement Officer for the City of Kingston who happened upon Charise during a scheduled inspection. Their conversation turned to what Charise does which then opened Jeanne, a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, up to a portrait session with Charise, something she never imagined she would be capable of doing. After years of shame around what her body looked like after her mastectomy, Jeanne shares openly and bravely about what this experience has done to heal her. Jeanne is a true inspiration, seeking to find the beauty and gratitude in each day of her life. I personally feel extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to peek into her resilience and wisdom.

#94 “One Woman Bands and Accountability Buddies” G.T. Thomas and Catriona Sturton

So excited today that I got to welcome back G.T. Thomas (https://www.instagram.com/gtthomasmusicandart/) who was Shana’s special guest on show No.30 from August 15th, 2018. Gwen is an Amsterdam-based simultstrumentalist (not sure if that’s how you spell that fancy word) who’s taken revelations from her journals and transformed them into catchy refrains for her latest Progressive Dream Pop album, “I Am a Highlighter Pen.” She performs as a one-woman-band on vocals, bass, synth & drum machine simultaneously – all LIVE (no computer/ backing tracks/ loopers), proving that even having collaborated with Fleet Foxes, The Metropole Orchestra, Benny Sings, and members of The B-52s, Steely Dan, and Pedro the Lion, she’s never lost her love of doing everything herself.

Catriona Sturton (https://www.instagram.com/catrionasturton/) is Canadian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. She used to be in a band in the ’90s called Plumtree (which had the hit “Scott Pilgrim” that inspired the graphic novel and movie by the same name). She’s toured with Italian harmonica wizards, played in a Hiroshima-based garage rock band, was a guest on The Price is Right, and has been to more places in remote Canada than most people ever get to. Nowadays, she’s a totally unique, industrious harmonica playing/violinist/guitarist/singing one-woman-band, under her own name.

They met through a clutter-clearing course online, where they were partnered up by the head coach, to be accountability buddies for that process. Through that, they learned of each other’s music, and when the course officially ended, they decided apply the tools they learned for “accountability buddy-ing” to their music careers! Now their on a mini tour together and stopped by to share a little about the juice in the journaling process that led to Gwen’s latest album, how Catriona picked up the harmonica when she was young and hung around a lot of blues dudes to learn tricks of the reeds, how and why they committed to themselves and their heart’s desires, and decluttering. They both played some tunes. We laughed. I cried. Wisdom was shared and lessons were learned by me, about the Book of Lift, “athletic greens,” and a slew of podcasts that I should tune into. One of my fave quotes of the show, and there were many, “Being unified with your desires is one of the most noblest things you can do.” G.T. Thomas. Now as Catriona might say, go and be somebody’s “love bomb.”

Gwen’s album release is Nov. 7th at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA, then they are both playing Nov. 12th at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, Nov. 16th in Princeton, NJ at Princeton Record Exchange and Small World Coffee, and Nov. 17th at a house show in Harrisonburg, VA, yeah Virginia! You can find tour details here!

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ and from both of today’s guests!

#92 “Circles and the Other C-Word” with Artist and Advisor Sadee Brathwaite + Artist and Activist Rakel Stammer

Hey listeners!

Today’s first guest is Sadee Brathwaite, an Artist and Minister/Priestess of Maåt. She makes drawings and paintings, figurative and abstract, about archetypes, symbols, ancient cosmologies, beliefs and myths. As an ordained Minister/Priestess, She advises people in life, in creativity, and in spirituality. Her calling, either through art or advising, is to help people heal and grow as spiritual, enlightened beings. We talk about how her art and her church were the things that brought her joy and comfort as a young person who moved from Barbados to the US at a young age, how her spirituality has evolved over the years, the sacred feminine and sacred symbolism that appear in her art, finding Ione and the Ministry of Maat, mysticism, and how it all comes together beautifully to complete the picture of her work and her life’s purpose.

My second guest is Rakel Stammer, an artist who primarily works in painting and drawing, but also dabbles in sound, installation, collage, writing, photography, printmaking and performance. Her work has been published in several magazines, anthologies and journals across the world and she has exhibited in Denmark, Sweden and the U.S. She recently completed a residency at the Women’s Studio Workshop and will be exhibiting her series “The Cunt Drawings” completed during a residency at Deer Creek Collective in November at @sassafrasny in Kingston, NY. #91 “On the Exhale” Actor, Maria Elena Maurin + Director, Ellen Honig

Today I get to sit down with actor and director of a powerful play, On the Exhale. When a senseless act of violence changes her life forever, a liberal college professor finds herself inexplicably drawn to the very weapon used to perpetrate the crime – and to the irresistible feeling of power that comes from holding life and death in her hands. Peering down the barrel of a uniquely American crisis, she begins to suspect that when it comes to gun violence, we’re all part of the problem.

Maria Elena Maurin has been in the theater for 21 years and is currently working on a production of On the Exhale directed by Ellen Honig for the Rhinebeck Theater Society. She’s played other equally challenging roles depicting the female experience in some of her most difficult situations such as her performance in Still about birthing a stillborn child. She has trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, NYC and at the Sande Shurin Acting Studio, NYC and Woodstock. Her recent theater credits include: Arms and the Man, Still, Outside Mullingar and Brilliant Traces with the Performing Arts of Woodstock and A Turn of The Screw with Kaaterskill Actors Theater. When not acting, she’s working as a massage therapist and a child care provider.

Ellen Honig is a theater director with 35 years of directing experience beginning with The Town Players in New York. She continued directing for multiple companies in the Hudson Valley. For The Rhinebeck Theatre Society: 1776 The Musical, A Little Night Music,Equivocation, Assassins, Copenhagen, and Mary Poppins. With The Cocoon Theatre of  Rhinebeck and now Poughkeepsie, most recently: My Simone and The Little Years. For Performing Arts of Woodstock, Outside Mullingar,  Uncle Vanya, and Arms and the Man. In 1984 she moved with her family to the Hudson Valley and became involved in Community Theatre, first with The Pawling Theatre group and then with Rhinebeck. She currently lives in Kingston NY with her partner, Ken.

Here’s a list of the opportunities you have to see this powerful and thought provoking play.

229 Greenkill Ave, Kingston, NY 12401

October 28th, 7pm at Cocoon Theatre

#90 “Love and Authenticity” with Artist, Lynn Herring and Creator, Jenny Mulak

Today, my first guest is Artist, Lynn Herring, who was born in Chicago but moved to New York in her 20’s to pursue a career as an advertising art director and to develop her studio practice. While in NY, she studied at the School of Visual Arts graduating with honors in 2008 with a BFA in Sculpture. Lynn eventually found her way upstate and recently completed her MFA studies in sculpture and printmaking at SUNY New Paltz where she graduated with honors while developing a new body of work designed to bring people together with art. This body of work is a reengineered Tic Tac Toe game designed to “Make America Relate Again.” Created with organic crooked-shaped, brightly-colored wood Xs and Os and using a more complicated wonky-shaped game board, Herring’s game, XOX! Share the Love®, is an art object used to help many different kinds of people to connect for a playful and sane moment in this time of cultural and political toxicity. She’s participating in this weekend’s O+ Festival where you can play XOX! Share the Love Friday from 6-8pm, Saturday from 12-6pm and Sunday from 12-4pm at Gallery Fifty5, 55 Greenkill Avenue in Kingston, NY.

Lynn and I get to talk about how one goes about making a board game, how she balanced work and school and why she made the leap to follow her passion, downsize and keep making art. Much of her work is very female centric so she shares the inspiration for her work and how it was important for her to follow her art creation versus procreation. She even put a raw egg in her mouth to make her point for one past performance. She’s focused on living life authentically and for that I am grateful for her example!

Today’s second guest is Jenny Mulak who after much soul searching left her big corporate gig and moved to the Catskills to create Juniper Grove, a retreat space on her sacred land designed for healers, artists, lovers, musicians, writers, yogis, seekers and creatives of all kinds. Speaking of she also has her very own organic and vegan body product line “Jenifer Juniper” that she’s bringing to next weekend’s Hudson Valley Vegfest. We get to chat about how she finally made the big leap, the ups and down, really mostly ups, of building her dream retreat space, how and why she makes her Jenifer Juniper products and how and why she became a Vegan. Her online store will be coming soon so stay tuned, but meanwhile locals can check her out and also support past guest Rebecca Moore, founder of Vegfest next weekend, October 19th and 20th at BSP in Kingston, NY.

Come check me out at O+ this weekend performing with past guest, Aki Goto Saturday evening at 6pm at Litebrite Neon and then Sunday, co-facilitating a Healing Ring of Tantra with past guest Nidhi Adhiya-Huba. All this makes you want to move to the Hudson Valley, huh? Come on join us!

Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another!

#89 “Surrogacy & Souls” with Filmmaker Beth Aala and Musician Lady Moon

You’re gonna love the talent, conviction and compassion of my guests today.

First up is Beth Aala, a three-time Emmy award-winning producer & recipient of a Peabody Award for her documentary work at HBO. Beth co-directed & produced feature documentary, RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN for Discovery, which premiered at Sundance in 2017. She also directed & produced, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (A&E IndieFilms) with comedian, Mike Myers. It won the Hollywood Film Award for Best Documentary & was nominated for the 2015 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

Beth recently completed her latest feature documentary, Made in Boise about a surprising surrogacy industry in Boise, Idaho. It had its world premiere at AFI Docs Film Festival in June 2019 and is screening it at the upcoming Woodstock Film Festival on October 4th and 5th. You can purchase tickets here. Not in the Hudson Valley, not available this weekend? Made in Boise will have a broadcast premiere on PBS’ award winning Independent Lens on October 28th at 10pm eastern.

Amongst other things, I get to chat with Beth about her film career, working at MTV, what it was like working at HBO with so many talented women, how a close friend asked her to be her surrogate after years of trying to conceive and how that coupled with a friend working in Boise led her to the subject matter of this latest film. I urge you to watch this fascinating documentary about a subject that is well worth a longer conversation.

During the second half of the show I get to sit down with Lady Moon of Lady Moon & The Eclipse, a multicultural ensemble based in New York. Through soaring vocal textures and R&B/afrobeat-influenced rhythms, they create inspirational music that explore the cosmic soul; a journey to become one’s best self. Lady Moon carries the essence of the Moon, delivering a message of love, peace, and light, while the musicians serve as the Sun shining light upon her. The audience represents the Earth, also known as the Star People of Earth, completing the metaphorical eclipse. With a marked emphasis on inclusivity and spiritual unity, Lady Moon & The Eclipse explore positive music through the live experience to grow and make a difference in themselves and in the world.

Lady Moon and I talk about how she became Lady Moon, her parents, how they shaped who she is, making music, relationship through her musical collaborations, the moon, the sun, the cosmic soul, and becoming free. She’s a woman full of deep wisdom and sincere love. I can’t wait to catch her and her “star-mates” at the upcoming O+ Festival on Friday, October 11th from 9-10pm in the back of BSP in Kingston, NY. And stay tuned for news on the release of a new single coming later in October!

Thanks for tuning in friends!

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.

#88 “Gyno Chat” with Dr. Novatt and “Improvising” with Musician Arone Dyer

Woo hoo, I am back from my travels and happy to be chatting live with some ladies today. First up, Dr. Amy Novatt, Gynecologist and Women’s Health Advocate is back with us answering questions about menopause and perimenopause today. She’ll be back again in November taking your calls so stay tuned for more details on her next appearance.

Joining me for my chat with the doctor and for a deep dive into her life and her process is Arone Dyer, a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer & founding member of duos Buke and Gase@bukeandgase & Mistresses@mistressesband as well as the composer and director of Dronechoir @dronechoir where she examines social dis/comfort through long-durational choral performance, metamorphosing through a moving meditation of sometimes subtle sonic changes. In addition to her own projects she has made appearances on the National’s 2018 Grammy-winning release Sleep Well Beast, creating and singing the introduction to their #1 Billboard Hit “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” and collaborated with many other artists too! We talk about Arone’s formidable years, her first band, leaving the band, collaborating, improvising, letting go, dreaming and a bit more that you’ll have to tune in to hear all about. She’s participating in this year’s O+ Festival with Dronechoir and if you’re interested in joining the Dronechoir, subscribe here to be in touch with Arone.

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner and Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ She’s got a new release coming out on October 25th so go click on her website!
