#87 “Connecting and Restoring” with Artist, Keiko Sono and Restorative Justice Coordinator, Claudia Abbott-Barish

And finally, my interview with Keiko and Claudia! Making my way into Morocco, but thanks to my guests for coming into the studio a few weeks ago to record these amazing conversations for you all to hear.

Today’s first interview is with Keiko Sono, an artist, turned permaculturist and universal basic income supporter. Keiko’s work has “one fundamental goal: to connect us to the world—to other beings, the natural environment, or objects; in present, past or future; in absurdity, wit, or utter beauty.” She uses visual media, video, and text to create events and projects that focus on connections. She and I get to speak about why she left art and how she fell back in love with it, the work that she’s currently doing to connect people to people and people to place, how permaculture principles now shape her life and something she’s very passionate about, universal basic income. You can find all the details on her Catskill Waters Project including links to the Youtube channel and podcast here, https://catskillwaters.org/.

At the midpoint of today’s show, you will hear my interview with Claudia Abbott-Barish, Restorative Justice Coordinator at the Dutchess County Meditation Center. I heard her speaking at a screening for the film Circle Up (thanks for the hot tip Rashida Tyler) and knew I needed to have her as a guest. Claudia has been a natural mediator since childhood and is a community organizer at heart. Her preoccupation with systemically unheard voices in society began while organizing around various issues of environmental, racial and political injustice. Her current focus is on social disciplinary practices and how to shift from punitive and isolating to restorative and collective. She believes in the power of people and the transformative impact of sharing stories and being heard. She is driven by a desire to help create effective alternatives to punishment and incarceration that focus on community healing and understanding, over policies that separate people from their families and support systems. She’s an inspiration to me and a gem of a human being who has immense wisdom to share.

What a gift these two women are. Thanks for listening!

#86 “Women Helping Women” with New Start for Women Program Director, Jordan Scruggs + Grief Coach, Claire Papell

Writing from Espańa and after a little schedule mixup on my part, sharing the proper episode for today’s show. Don’t worry, Keiko and Claudia are next week, I promise!!! I am so excited to be sharing these interviews that I recorded with these two fabulous women who embody a big theme of this show, Women Helping Women!

My first interview is with Jordan Scruggs, a past guest with an exciting new job at SUNY Ulster as director of the New Start for Women Program. Jordan shares all the details about this program which to me is a great example of how one community is working to help lift up women who so deserve it. Jordan shares the fears and excitement of a career change and the lessons she’s already learning on her new job about the reality of what life can be like for these women. I can’t wait to have the women in the program on the show to hear about their experiences and the sisterhood they are already forming!

Midway through today’s show you’ll hear my chat with Claire Papell, a Grief Coach for Women holding space for women to heal and recover from the loss of a loved one. I was introduced to Claire by friend Amy Short and was so impressed by the meaningfulness of her work that I wanted to have her on as a guest. Claire is an advanced certified yoga teacher and a continuing student of yogic philosophy and spiritual wisdom which she brings into her work. Claire shares about her own past trauma and how it has led her to the work she does in holding space in a world that is often trying to push and pull us into places we are not yet ready to go. Thank you Claire!

Brava ladies!

#85 “Doing Power Differently” Mid-Hudson Misfits Roller Derby + Sarah Urech, Omega

Ooooh, what amazing ladies were on the show today!

First, I welcome three of the Mid-Hudson Misfits Roller Derby team, Farrell Brenner aka Eleanor Bruisevelt, Laura Palermo aka Madame Manatease, and Samantha Willenbucher, still perfecting her roller derby name. We talk about the nuts and bolts of roller derby, why they started skating, how to become a misfit, how it’s changed their lives, and some pretty amazing roller derby metaphors for life in general plus a little about who they are when they’re not skating. They have upcoming local bouts at Skate Time 209 on September 7th and October 5th and one in Troy on November 23rd. A portion of the proceeds supports local charities…plus you can join the skating party after the bout with special guest DJ’s!

In the second half of today’s show, I have the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Urech, Acting Director of the Omega Women’s Leadership Center about their upcoming Women & Power Conference: Gathering Our Strength coming up at the end of this month, September 27-29th at the beautiful Omega campus in Rhinebeck, NY. This year the conference features speakers Elizabeth Lesser, Tarana Burke, Roxane Gay and many more. It’s not too late to join or to tune in to the year-round happenings and online sessions from the OWLC. Sarah shares personally about how she got the the Hudson Valley via her performance work at the Hudson River Playback Theatre and how that led to her work at Omega. We also get to talk about how to #DoPowerDifferently and how Sarah’s work in Playback Theater has helped her to become a better listener. Watch Sarah speak about the practice of listening as an important step in human evolution.

Plus self care thoughts and practices from all of today’s quests! Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another!

#84 “Living Cooperatively” Evelyn Wright, Commonwealth HV and Julia Farr, Kingston Land Trust

Today I have a special guest host, MY MOM! In town for my big nuptials happening this weekend. We’re talking commons and cooperatives, economic democracy and sustainability with special guests Evelyn Wright founder of Commonwealth Hudson Valley and Julia Farr, Executive Director of the Kingston Land Trust. The website of Commonwealth HV perfectly sums up the importance of the work these women do, "Economic stagnation and the impending climate crisis have provoked a global flowering of interest and activity in developing innovative, community-driven ways to address income and wealth inequality, meet people’s needs, and build more stable, just communities. Communities are using a growing toolbox of strategies including cooperatives, community land trusts, non-extractive financing, and collaborative processes to create good, locally rooted jobs, democratize community wealth, and rebuild local commons. Cities and regions are supporting these efforts by creating support ecosystems, mobilizing anchor purchasing, and building grassroots incubators." Both of these ladies are spearheading this type of transformation in our community, and we hope it inspires you to be more cooperatively wherever you are.

#83 “Long Live Art” Sita Gomez and Susie DeFord

Today I get to have a lively conversation with two friends about art and life and how the two intersect.

Sita Gomez de Kanelba is a distinguished Cuban American visual artist born in Paris 1932. She is daughter of the doctor Domingo Mauricio Gómez-Gimeranez and Else-Marie (Formo) Gómez. Her family fled the Nazi’s after Hitler’s request for her father to work for him. They were later exiled from Cuba and lived in New York. Sita received her Diploma in Art From Parsons School of Design in 1955. She has shown in exhibits and galleries all over the world, from the Cisneros Gallery in New York to the Museum of Modern art in Bogata, Columbia. She is a close friend and contemporary of the artist Carmen Herrera, and like Herrera is beginning to gain more recognition later in life. Sita continues to paint and show her work and now lives in Hudson, New York.

Susie DeFord studied poetry at Florida State University, and received her MFA from the New School University. Her work has appeared in BOMB, Poets and Artists, Mipoesias, Work Zine, Dog Fancy, Shampoo, the Anthology "Dogs Singing," amongst others. She has taught writing at Brooklyn Friends School, Berkeley Carroll, and the College of New Rochelle. Also a musician, in 2012 she started NEON GRLZ a collaborative musical experiment. Back in the day she played in the bands Terset and Wu Wei. She writes the blog Dog Poet Laureate. She teaches at The Kingston Writers Studio in Kingston, NY. Susie is a CPDT-KA dog trainer who lives in Catskill, NY where she runs Susie’s Pet Care, a dog boarding & training business. She is also a Licensed Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty in Kingston, NY.

The two fatefully met when Sita was looking to sell her home and Susie is in the business of selling them. They are now endeavoring to publically revive Sita’s impressive art collection with her first showing in decades this October 12th and 13th as a part of Hudson, NY’s open studios. Susie is also partnering with a local filmmaker to produce a documentary film on Sita’s colorful art and life and is actively pursuing funding to complete this project.

#82 “Living Well” Emily Flynn – City of Kingston + Annie Bond – HeartMind Healer School

On today’s show I get to speak with Emily Flynn, Director of Health and Wellness for the City of Kingston, Live Well Kingston, and President of Bike-Friendly Kingston, and Annie Bond, clairvoyant, healer, founder of the Divine Mother Center and HeartMind Healer School, toxic-free living expert and award winning author.

Emily and I get to talk about the projects she’s involved with to make Kingston a healthy and vibrant community. She shares some of the details of Live Well Kingston and its many spokes, Eat Well, Play Well, Age Well. Travel Well and Heal Well. As a cycling advocate she gives us a glimpse into what it means to be "bike-friendly" and what she and others are doing to make the transition in Kingston. You can catch her at one of the weekly "Slow Rides" in Kingston or enjoying one of her favorite public spaces like the new green line.

Annie begins her story describing the sudden degradation of her physical and mental health after a one-two punch of exposure to toxic substances which she gratefully recognizes as what brought her to the work she now does. As an expert in toxic-free living, she shares a few nuggets of her vast knowledge, and recommends her book Better Basics for the Home as a good resource for living toxin-free. Her studies of energy and her own healing work led her to forming the HeartMind Healer Energy School where she teaches others how to heal themselves and others. You can book private sessions with Annie, sign up for her next school series or workshop, or you can activate your Life Channel – Pranic Tube with this meditation she practices daily.

#80 Lila Lolling – Yoga Philosophy Teacher, Author + Environmentalist

Today I get to go deep with an amazing woman who’s got a lot of story to share! Lila (lee-laa) Lolling is an experienced Hatha Yoga, meditation, and classical yoga philosophy teacher for nearly 20 years but that’s just the beginning. At the age of 15 she had a sudden onset of epilepsy. Around the same time she began to form a deep connection to the deaf community through a serendipitous baby-sitting gig. Serving the deaf community seemed to be her calling until at the age of 28 she found yoga which turned out to be the medicine that would keep her seizures at bay. She eventually combined the two and is the founder and co-director of the ASL Yoga Collective, formerly DeafYoga Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating yoga opportunities in ASL (American Sign Language). In 2016, she published her first book "Walking the Ancient Path of Yoga," and in June 2018 she was invited to speak on the topic "Yoga for Peace" at the United Nations. Most recently, she graduated from Omega Institute’s Ecological Literacy Immersion Program, a social and regenerative design course that further inspired her endeavor, EcoYoga Life which was envisioned in the Himalayas a year prior and birthed in the Hudson Valley where she currently resides.

Today, we talk about all of this, plus get some tips on what we can do to lead a more climate conscious lifestyle. We also get personal about the profound heart ache she experienced in 2017 following a very unexpected announcement from her then husband that he wanted a divorce. Utilizing the wisdom she’s absorbed from her years studying and practicing yoga philosophy, Lila allowed herself to feel it all, the sadness, anger, and depression, in order to truly grow from the pain of the experience and in turn heal old wounds and trauma that she hadn’t realized were still present in her consciousness. Today she gratefully walks through life with a deeper kind of presence and an open heart. Stay tuned to her website for how you can catch more of Lila’s wisdom on yoga philosophy and EcoYoga Life or catch her teaching classes in the Hudson Valley and beyond!

#79 Health Care is a Human Right and Aemen Bell on Devaxing

Today I get to speak with 4 fine ladies from Health Care is a Human Right (HCHR), a 501(c)3 not for profit charitable corporation, founded in 2003 by Susan Weeks, Physician Assistant, Vicky O’Dougherty, Homeopath, Susan Bissonnett, RN, and Jill Elliot, DVM. Since its inception, Health Care is a Human Right has offered free clinics in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York. NOTE: they are in the process of updating their website so if you come to a landing page with a red button saying "Learn More," click on that to be linked to the clinic info.

Joining the conversation is Susan Weeks, long time Physicians Assistant, Board President and co-founder of HCHR. Ida Rivera, Life Coach, Reiki Master and administrative assistant at HCHR, Jesse Scherer, Massage Therapist and volunteer coordinator at HCHR, and Wendy Wolosoff-Hayes, a practitioner of Spacious Heart Guidance, student of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, Matrix Energetics and several other energy healing modalities. We talk about why the organization was formed and how they all got involved with it, what they each do and why they do it. Plus we get to laugh a lot even though we’re talking about some serious stuff…health care IS a human right.

All are welcome to their free clinics, but if you have the means, donations are greatly appreciated! For a list of their upcoming clinics jump on over -> here.

For the second hour, I get to sit down with the wise and magical Aemen Bell, a certified Western Herbalist, who also works with the healing power of food, movement, breath, and Earth energies in her practice. After spending nearly two decades in NYC studying herbs, shamanism, and people, she’s delighted to now live in the mountains of Woodstock, New York. She teaches classes throughout the country on herbs and healing. She is currently writing several books & is available throughout the region for healing consultations and workshops in person and via telephone. Aemen is teaching a workshop on "Devaxing Our Kids" on August 8th at Woodstock Healing Arts. Aemen will share what to do before and after, including non-toxic, easy to use herbal remedies, as well as foods for the healing process. On today’s show Aemen shares the mystical story of finding a fasting book at the age of 14 and then secretly embarking on her own 10 day water fast which healed a chronic health condition and leading her into a life of herbalism. We get devaxing tips plus props for Burdock and Raspberry Leaf for uterine health. She’s pretty inspiring when it comes to personal wellness, awareness and the search for answers. I forget the exact quote (you’ll have to listen to confirm), but when talking about how she moved from a state of panic when thinking about vaxing her daughter to one of solution mode, she says, herbs are one answer, there are always many answers. Thanks Aemen!

Next week I get to speak with Lila Lolling on moving past sudden divorce, healing epilepsy with yoga, yoga philosophy, yoga for the deaf community and eco-living.
