#197 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics – Compassion and Anger”

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer and our monthly conversation inspired by Espiritualidad y Politica, which ponders ideas related to society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace. We talk about the practical implications of this and other related topics. Today we discuss how politics has become a team sport, return to our conversation about compassion, and then dip into the point and purpose of anger and how it it seems to be more socially accepted, even revered, if displayed by a man vs. a woman.

Mariaelena is an artist and the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization.

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Radio Kingston.

Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!

#196 Shulamit Elson “Grief and Sound Healing”

Today I have the honor of speaking with Shulamit Elson, and we begin the show hearing about her experience in losing her daughter to leukemia just over a year ago and how she moved through the tremendous grief of this experience. This flows into a conversation about Shulamit’s own journey into finding her soul’s purpose and the healing sounds that form the basis of her work today.  She is the creator of MediSounds Meditation, and the Director of MediSounds, as well as the founder of The Great Octave Foundation. She has taught MediSounds Meditation and vocal sound-based mindfulness practices worldwide, in places as diverse as Esalen and Omega Institutes, Tibet House in NYC, meditation workshops in Andalusia, Spain and Oxford, England, the Sri Auribindo Auroville community in India, and in Israel. Under the auspices of The Great Octave Foundation, her activities have included work throughout Israel during a particularly fraught time of conflict in 2002,  HIV positive men and women in Mexico City, and returning Iraq war veterans. In 2001 Shulamit was honored to give the keynote address in Washington, DC to introduce US Congressional Bill H. R. 808 to create a Cabinet Level Department of Peace.

Prior to creating MediSounds Meditation, Shulamit had a 20-year career in business consulting and investment banking. Her positions included Manager of Training and Development at Sandoz Inc. and Director of Organizational Communications at the public relations firm Hill & Knowlton. As President of her own independent consulting firm, Shulamit advised on issues of communication and organizational development at such corporations as Ford Motor Company, United States Lines, Nabisco Brands, and Irving Trust.

Shulamit is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Kabbalah of Prayer ~Sacred Sounds and the Soul’s Journey, and the creator of the newly-released CD MediSounds ~ The Path to Wholeness; as well as Beyond Words ~ Sacred Sounds of the Tree of Life; as well as Vibration ~ Shulamit and the Drepung Gomang Buddhist Monks.

P.S. at the end of the show I append my weekly “pre-show” banter with Warren and Manuel who share with me thoughts about being a people pleaser!

#195 Samhain and Connecting with Our Ancestors

Today I wander into the Festival of Samhain and share some traditions or rituals that may inspire you. This includes a conversation and experiential practice to contemplate the lives of our ancestors based off of the book, My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakam. P.S. the show officially starts around minute 11, but I thought the superstition conversation with my colleagues was thematically appropriate to include!

Here are the Youtubers who provided some of the information and rituals shared -> Rebekka of the Witches’ Cookery, and Alwyn Oak.

Here’s the Spotify playlist of the songs we listened to throughout the show. Feel free to use them as you feel called for the contemplation practices I offer in today’s show, or just pause the recording and sit in silence, journal or listen to your own music.

Plus, here’s the info on the Ringing the Bells for Climate Change event I mentioned.

#194 Sisterhood (and Politics) with Melinda McKnight, Lynne Bailey and Jana Martin

Today I am talking sisterhood and politics with three fabulous women, but first up, I share an interview I did, BC (before Covid), of Mikayla Haggerty, Marlea Catoosa, Ruby Friedman from the Golden Fleece 4H Sheep Club Dutchess County. I met them 2 years ago while attending the Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. I wanted hot apple cider and they were selling it, which made me curious about what they were doing there and why. Tune in to find out!

Then I share some of the astrological Full Moon report for this Wednesday, and play songs, Circles and Blue to Gold, off the new Sarah Perrotta release, “Blue to Gold.”

Then around minute 53 I have the honor of welcoming these three women running for local election in the Town of Hurley.

Jana Martin has been active in Ulster County community issues since making it her home in 2000. She’s a content director and editor for green and advanced technology firms, and an author published by The New York Times, Forbes, Simon & Schuster and Random House. She has taught writing at SUNY New Paltz and Word Café in Woodstock and Kingston. She was an active member of Eagle Valley Search Dogs K9 search and rescue team, is a runner and equestrian, and a proud stepmom to two boys. “Hurley’s Town Board needs support for the great work it’s already started — and to truly listen to the concerns of this community. I’d be proud to bring my skills and community spirit to the table.” Running for Hurley Town Board.

Melinda McKnight grew up in the Hamlet of Port Ewen and attended Kingston High School. Upon graduating, she earned an A.S. degree in Journalism from SUNY Ulster, a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Public History from SUNY Albany. She spent her early career in nonprofit administration where she managed all aspects of operations including, developing exhibits and special events, negotiating contracts, grant writing, budgeting and human resources.  She has served as Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Ulster, taught Continuing Education classes at Ulster BOCES and provided a 12-week character development program based on The Virtues Project at a medium security NYS Prison.  Since 2010, she has worked in the field of Building Performance in a variety of roles in a family-owned company that transitions homes and businesses off fossil fuels. Her current role is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. She currently serves as Vice President of Klyne Esopus Historical Society Museum, Board Member of Citizens for Local Power and Councilperson on the Town of Hurley Town Board. As a member of the Hurley Town Board, Melinda worked across party lines in writing and passing a Short Term Rental Law (Commended by the Ulster County Planning Board) and in creating a Zoning Task Force and a Climate Smart Task Force. She’s running for Hurley Town Supervisor.

Lynne Bailey grew up in a rural suburban area of Suffolk County and moved to NYC in 1976 starting her long and diverse professional career. In 2013 she purchased her home in Hurley and in recent years, Lynne has been very involved in community matters, volunteers for the Zoning Task Force and is the communications manager of the Hurley Climate Smart Task Force. Ms. Bailey has long cultivated service-oriented practices, and is eager for the opportunity to serve her community and its residents in the ways she knows best – using modern technology and methods, impeccable recordkeeping and communication skills, for the improvement of local government operations – with the respect and diligence that all residents merit.Service-oriented, accessible, trustworthy, technologically efficient, transparent and accountable. She’s running for Hurley Town Clerk/Tax Collector

They share about why they wanted to get involved in politics, how collaborating and reaching across the political aisle is important, how getting involved in local politics can be very positive and valuable for all of us, some of the challenges they have faced, and how their “sisterhood” has helped them through the difficult moments. So get out and VOTE! Early voting starts October 23rd here in Ulster County and election day is November 2nd!

P.S. here’s the Rosendale Uke Group I mentioned!

#193 Marielena Ferrer “Politics and Spirituality and the Downsides of Empathy”

Welcome to another installment of our monthly excursion into Politics and Spirituality with Marielena Ferrer, a socially engaged visual artist and art educator. She serves on the Kingston Arts Commission and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Task Force. Ferrer studied architecture at Central University of Venezuela and later earned a certificate of distinction in “Leadership and Empowerment” from Spain’s Polytechnic University of Valencia and a diploma in “Gender Leadership” through the EQUAL Transnational Cooperation Community Initiative of the European Social Fund. In addition, she earned a University Expert Diploma in “Mental Health, Cultural Processes and Psychological Interventions With Immigrants, Minorities and the Socially Excluded” from the University of Barcelona. Ferrer is currently completing a BFA in sculpture from SUNY New Paltz makes art to “assist people in becoming aware of themselves and their environment as fully as possible.”

On the second Mo(o)nday of the month we get together to discuss subjects related to or inspired by the Art of Living and the Art of Living together, two themes from the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which Marielena contributed to 10 years ago while living in Spain. This month we continue our conversation on what it means to be “in community” inspired by Marielena’s recent O+ Festival participatory art exhibit. She also shares her perspective on Indigenous People’s Day which interesting to me is celebrated in different ways and under different names in other countries around the world. We were inspired by this article about the downsides of empathy and finish up the show exploring some of it’s main themes. We’d love to hear what you think!

#192 Mel Cioffi “Beyond Kegels” and Perla, Mariel, Christine, Carolyn, Maritza and Sue from “Performance sin Miedo”

Today I get to chat (and laugh) with Dr. Melissa Cioffi, PT, the owner of New Quest Physical Therapy, a mobile physical therapy practice specializing in pelvic health Mel Cioffi is a doctor of physical therapy who “frees active folx with vaginas from endless kegels and garbage exercises so they can get their damn lives back.” She’s participating in the O+ Festival offering a class, “Beyond Kegels,” where you’ll learn the basics of what the pelvic floor is, does, and how to condition yours beyond kegels alone. You will learn how breathwork can be incorporated with your deep abdominals and pelvic floor. This will be for AFAB participants (I am not trained in pelvic floor conditioning related to AMAB people…yet!) Join her Sunday, October 10th from [1:15]-[2:15] at the Yoga House.

In the second half of today’s show I get to speak with several members of the Performance sin Miedo, a community event bringing awareness to ending violence against women.  Joining the conversation are co-organizers, Perla Ayora and Mariel Fiori; choir director, Christine Gevert; cellist, Carolyn Leschuza; and community singers Maritza Del Razo and Sue Weed.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most serious, widespread, deep-rooted and tolerated human rights violations in the world. Women and girls suffer various types of violence in all areas of their lives and under multiple manifestations: at home, in public spaces, at school, at work, in cyberspace, in the community, in politics, in institutions, among others. According to UN Women Mexico, globally, 1 in 3 women has suffered physical and / or sexual violence throughout their lives, and in some countries this proportion increases to 7 out of 10. Another unpleasant record: 14 of the 25 countries with the highest number of femicides are in Latin America and the Caribbean. In Mexico, 43.9% of women have experienced violence from their current or last partner.

And in the United States we are not left behind in statistics concerning the violent patriarchy. According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence, every minute almost 20 people are physically abused by their partner; in a year this is equivalent to more than 10 million people.

Because of these type of numbers, and because of specific cases that we know here in the Hudson Valley and beyond, it is that a score of Spanish-speaking women, led by choral director Christine Gevert, with the support of two radio program hosts, Perla Ayora of No me digas, and Mariel Fiori, of La Voz con Mariel Fiori, on Radio Kingston, unite our voices for a Performance without fear, free and open to the public. All people who support the global cause, against femicide and against violence against women, are invited to bring their banners and join in on Sunday, October 10 at 4 p.m. at the Parking Lot of the Kingston Court House, 285 Wall Street. The event will be livestreamed and English interpretation will be provided.

What will happen at the Performance without Fear / Performance sin miedo? Everyone is invited to join in singing the Spanish language feminist anthem that went around the world in 2019 and that began in Chile thanks to the Las Tesis Collective, A rapist on your way, with strong and powerful lyrics: Patriarchy is a our judge, that imprisons us at birth, and our punishment is the violence you don’t see. After this song, several people will have the opportunity to share their experience with gender violence, from the organizers and participants, to women who work in organizations that provide resources to help survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.

Finally, we will sing another feminist hymn, The song without fear by Vivir Quintana, with the arrangement of Paz Court. When she gave her permission for this performance in Kingston,Chilean composer and singer Paz Court, who arranged the Song without fear, which was sung by El Palomar choir for the first time, said: “Thank you for joining your voices and helping to spread this message around the world”.

We have changed some of the names that are mentioned in the song for cases that the group wanted to highlight, such as Vanessa Guillén, Nicole “Nikki” Addimando, and Marielle Franco. In the revised lyrics, we also recognize the thousands of immigrant women who are waiting to reach the United States and are now in overcrowded shelters in Mexico.

Christine Gevert, founder and choral artistic director of Crescendo, in charge of preparing the participating Spanish-speaking women, said “I feel very honored to be able to be a part and help in this initiative. I realize that I have been privileged in my life thus far and I live in a safe ‘bubble’ here in the Northwest corner of CT. I frequently experienced sexual harassment on the streets of Chile growing up, but I never thought much about it as it was part of our reality and we got used to dealing with it. I did not realize how much domestic violence, especially against women, is still a problem in this country, and in the countries of Latin America and in our neighbor Mexico!”

For more information or to participate, email lavoz@radiokingston.org

We also listened to the songs, “New Moon” by Breanna Barbara who is playing the O+ Festival Friday at 8:30pm at Keegan Ale’s, and “Right Now is All We Know” by Shana Falana who’s performing at 7:45pm Friday evening at the County Lot. If you’re listening to the podcast version grab the link to the playlist above.

And DON’T FORGET about Marielena’s “The Art of Living Together” also happening as part of the O+ Festival all weekend long! Check the schedule for details.

#191 Therese Shechter “My So-Called Selfish Life”

On today’s show I share my conversation with Therese Shechter, award-winning filmmaker and writer, and the founder of the feminist production company Trixie Films.  Her work fuses humor, activism, and personal storytelling to disrupt what’s considered most sacred about womanhood. She is a Canada Council for the Arts grantee for her documentary My So-Called Selfish Life which is having its World Premier this week at the Woodstock Film Festival. The film examines what it means to say no to motherhood in a society that assumes all women want children, and exposes what’s at stake when women are denied the right to control their own reproductive lives. It is the third part of a trilogy which includes her films “How To Lose Your Virginity” (2013) and “I Was A Teenage Feminist” (2005). These documentaries have screened from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul to Seoul, and her work is in the collections of over 300 universities, non-profits, and libraries. I had the opportunity of a sneak peak at her film and it’s fascinating, thought provoking, informative and entertaining… and this is coming from someone who has struggled to have children yet is STILL trying!

Woodstock Film Festival Showtimes and Locations:

World Premiere: Thursday, September 30 [4:45] PM at Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NY

Encore Screening: Friday, October 1 [11:00] AM at Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties NY

#190 Kia Abilay “The Gift of Listening”

On the show today I get to speak with Kia Abilay an Akashic Records Teacher and Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, Energy & Intuitive Communicator and a One Spirit Minister. For many years she worked as a practitioner in the Wellness Center at Omega but for the past year has been working on a book sharing stories from her work and lessons about the gift of listening. The book is titled The Gift of Listening, Cultivating Your Connection with Spirit and is due to be released on October 20, 2021. You can get info about the book and general newsletter goodness by signing up for her mailing list, or follow her on Instagram for announcements.

Today Kia shares about her connection with Spirit and how it’s impacted her life as well as some stories from her life and how the process of writing her first book has continued her lifelong work of listening and healing. She also gracefully indulges my curiosities about her time spent doing astral travel and talks about how we all receive these gifts from Spirit, we just don’t always open them.

#189 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moon-Day of the month and the return of Marielena Ferrer! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and we’re using that book to seed conversations relating to spirituality and politics. Marielena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is also an artist and will be participating in this weekend’s Art Walk Kingston at The D.R.A.W. as well as the O+ Festival, Oct. 8-10.

As a reminder or for those just tuning into these conversations, the book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we talk about power, money, privilege, and influence via the topics addressed in the New Yorker article, “Life After White Collar Crime,” which excellently address the addictive nature of money and influence, how and why white collar crime has been policed (or not), and the overall lack of ethical and moral boundaries in business and finance circles. What happened to valuing ethics?!?!? Let us know what you think. We’ll certainly be returning to these themes as we move through more of the subjects covered in Espiritualidad y Politica.
