breast cancer – i want what SHE has

289 Hope Nemiroff and Sarah Carlson “Breast Cancer Options”

Today I am honored to speak with Hope Nemiroff, Executive Director and Founder of Breast Cancer Options and Sarah Carlson, a recent addition to the Breast Cancer Options organization. We get to hear about Hope’s cancer journey which led her to be involved with extensive research and advocacy for breast cancer care and health policy. Then we spend some time understanding the importance of patient advocacy, discuss the science related to cancer care and prevention, all of the programming they offer from kids camps to metastatic retreats, and are joined by caller Ilona Ross who added more to contemplate in this complex conversation based upon her efforts to advocate for herself.

Breast Cancer Options is an independent non-profit 501(C)3 organization and the largest provider of free and unique breast cancer services in the Hudson Valley. In many places, we are the only provider. We are an organization of survivors and their supporters who understand that a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is suddenly faced with some of the most important decisions she will ever make about her own healthcare. In deciding on a plan of action, it is important to understand:

  • That all questions are good ones
  • Which information is credible and reliable
  • What statistics really mean
  • Which lifestyle changes can make a difference
  • How science-based integrative medicine can be used with conventional treatments.
  • That you do not have to face all this, including physician visits, by yourself

Their mission is to educate breast cancer patients about effective treatment options, to advocate for and support informed patient choice and to promote public awareness regarding cancer risk reduction.

226 “Decoding Health” Sarah Ann Carlson

Sarah Carlson is a health coach who was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2020. What followed was a deep plunge into her health, genetics, nutrient levels and energetic and mental healing as she figured out the roadmap to wellness, vitality, and resilience that was individualized and informed by her unique genetics.

At this point, the deep darkest night of the soul of her cancer journey is passed, and despite being stage 2A at time of her surgery, she just celebrated her one year anniversary of her diagnosis with her first mammogram and ultrasound, and is well and cancer-free! She’s learned a lot along the way and is now helping others decode their health. You can sign up for Sarah’s newsletter and follow her on Instagram  @decodinghealthprogram to get notifications about podcast episodes, blog posts, happenings, or to just hear about her work and her journey.

Today’s episode is rich with useful information. Some key take aways: a one size approach may not be the most efficient or the most effective approach to managing one’s health; it’s important to have a complete picture of your health including genetics and nutrient levels via bloodwork; hormone imbalance in women is prevalent, but there’s lots that can be done; speaking of, it’s important for you to know about choline; there are good and not so good ways to detox the body, it can happen quite naturally with the proper support; knowing how and where your body is taking in toxins is a part of the overall equation; health also encompasses emotional wellbeing and intergenerational trauma.

Here’s where you can learn more about People’s Place Holistic Care Day.

#198 June Millington “From Fanny to Institute for Musical Arts”

Today I have the ultimate honor to share my conversation with June Millington, a Filipino American guitarist, songwriter, producer, educator, actress and writer. She was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny, which was active from 1970 to 1974. After leaving the band, June went in pursuit of her spiritual path, continued to make music, collaborate, act, write and is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) aka the “Magical Queendom” in Goshen, Massachusetts.

The Institute for the Musical Arts was co-founded with partner Ann Hackler in Northern California in 1986 and received its nonprofit status in 1987.  It operated its studio and programs from Bodega, California’s historic Old Creamery until 2001 when property was purchased in Western Massachusetts for a permanent facility. The institute’s nonprofit mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses.  Rooted in the legacy of progressive equal rights movements, IMA’s development is guided by the visions, needs and concerns of women from a diversity of backgrounds and has grown from the need to nourish ourselves and each other. In addition to its summer programs for girls, IMA offers concerts and workshops year-round in support of its nonprofit mission which, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.

Today June shares about how they are supporting girls at IMA, leaving Fanny, feminism, foremothers, Buddhism, cancer, life lessons and what’s she’s got on the horizon.

Here are the important links for you! IMA and their Summer Programs. Memoir, Land of a Thousand Bridges. And if you want more of the  Fanny story, you can check out where to stream Fanny: The Right to Rock.

You can support IMA by joining in their upcoming November 20th and 27th events, both of which will be livestreamed! And stay tuned for June’s upcoming release, “Snapshots.”

You can check out June’s TEDxTalk, “Rocking the Boat: How Playing Like a Girl Can Change the World.”

Linking here also to Ann Hackler’s TEDx Talk, “Leading from the Kitchen.”

And finally the Go Fund Me for Jean Millington, June’s sister.

Here’s the Full Moon report I read from!
