#122 “The Worst Years” Podcast with Sabine, Noelle and Maeve

Today I have the honor of playing an interview I did with the three girls who are the hosts of The Worst Years podcast.

Maeve is an only child with two moms and a dog named Brooklyn. She lived in Brooklyn, NY, until she was eight (hence the name of her dog). This summer, she will turn 11. Maeve is a competitive gymnast and plays clarinet. Her favorite subjects in school are writing, reading, science, art, and anything related to music. Maeve loves hiking and biking and everything outdoors. She’s been going to Wild Earth since she was five. When she grows up, she wants to be an interior designer.

Sabine is the middle child of a big family that lives in a three-generational household. She plays cello and piano and will be 11 this summer. She wants to be a mathematician for NASA when she grows up, so she can study the stars. She became a vegetarian when she saw a billboard about animal rights. When asked what’s her favorite thing to do, she says, “Eat. Sleep. Play. Repeat.”

Noelle at age 10 3/4 is the youngest of two children and lives happily between her amicably split parents. Noelle loves reading and writing. She likes cats, playing the ukulele, comedy, and dislikes the color chartreuse. Noelle sings and plays string bass, and thrives on karaoke in her spare time. Bitten by the theater bug last year in the high school production of Matilda, she has developed a love of the stage, and when she grows up, Noelle wants to be an actor on Broadway!

We learn about the making of their podcast, middle school, their likes and dislikes and life during quarantine!

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ AND the girls’ suggestions: “Joke” by Brandi Carlile, “Would You Be So Kind” by Dodie, and “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish

#121 JoAnn Stevelos “Public Health Advisor, Researcher and Speaker”

Today I am honored to welcome JoAnn Stevelos to the show. A public health advisor, researcher and speaker, she started out working in a virology lab and has since worked for startups and nonprofits to prevent cancer, type 2 diabetes and other chronic illnesses, and is now presently the Executive Director for the Coalition for Supportive Care of Kidney Patients at the School of Nursing at George Washington University. She is a musician, playwright and writer who has used both her professional and creative skills in her work to prevent child violation, trauma, and sex trafficking, as well as to help political activists who have survived prison and torture receive the psycho-social services needed to help them reintegrate into society. She is published widely including a book about her own story as a victim, survivor, and advocate of child sexual abuse by clergy titled, Howard Be Thy Name.

Today we talk about some difficult yet important conversations like child sexual abuse, grooming of communities by abusers, childhood obesity, young male sexuality, pornography, and early childhood intervention to prevent abuse. JoAnn shares about her creative endeavors which have helped her do some pretty difficult work over the years, how her work with the Coalition has been affected by COVID-19, public health in light of what we’re experiencing with COVID including an article she wrote about Helping Child Abuse Victims During COVID-19, and one of her favorite subjects, HOPE! She’s truly a well of profound wisdom and a force of positivity whose story I am so happy to be able to share.

Thanks JoAnn, can’t wait to follow along in all your creative endeavors!

#120 MK Burnell “More Music Podcast: Quarantine Beat”

Still in quarantine, still making it happen!

Today’s guest is MK Burnell, host of the brand new podcast More Music Please: Quarantine Beat, where she chats with music industry professionals about life during COVID… and whatever else comes up. Until the pandemic shook things up, she was a radio host and music director with a particular passion for supporting local and emerging artists. She lives outside of Kingston with her partner and dogs. When not in lockdown, she performs with bands Locofreeq, Uncledad and Cold Flavor Repair.

We check in about how she’s doing during the pandemic, how she got through being let go from her radio host gig mid quarantine, starting a podcast, some of her favorite musicians like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, making music with her bands, mindfulness and hiking. So good.

We listened to a favorite song of MK’s, “13 Beaches” by Lana Del Rey.

Tune into her podcast, new episodes released every Monday!

#119 Shannon Donnell “NYC Nurse on the Frontline”

The one and only, Shannon Donnell is my very special guest today. Shannon is a nurse on the front lines in NYC right now, but she had three days off last week and graciously gave me some of that time for an interview to hear how things are going for her out there. You may know Shannon from her years of running the clinic for the O+ Festival She’s a multitalented musician, vocalist and big-hearted, brave nurse making a huge difference in people’s lives!

Shannon walks us through becoming a nurse, the various iterations of roles she’s taken on as a hospice nurse and travel nurse up to her current role on the front lines during this pandemic. She indulges my curiosity around lung health and explains the term of the day, pulmonary toileting. Yep! And Shannon agrees, “our lungs are amazing!” She gives us a little tutorial on breathing for good lung health and shares her recommendations for reopening, hint…think like a nurse and wash your hands. Of course we get a little philosophical, talk about self care, the state of the healthcare system, a new economy, and gush over our mutual adoration for Jim James of My Morning Jacket.

Thank you Shannon! We’re thinking of YOU!!!

Here’s O+’s Facebook Page where you can find more information about the Loving Kindness Meditations which will likely be happening on Fridays going forward. I’m subbing this Friday! 2pm Eastern. Here’s the Zoom link to join. The Mental Health Hotline can be found on their website here.

Here’s my article of the oft referenced, “Epic Elimination Diet

To all the podcast listeners who want to cry with the songs, here you go!

“Look at You” by My Morning Jacket

In the infinitely wise words of Jim James from “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)“:

“I’m going where there ain’t no fear
I’m going where the spirit is near
I’m going where the living is easy
And the people are kind
A new state of mind

I’m going where the ain’t no police
I’m going there ain’t no disease
I’m going where there ain’t no need
To escape from what is
Only spirits at ease”

Yukari Ogawa, a vet tech who traveled to the US despite only speaking enough English to introduce herself in order to attend a school that would allow her to pursue her passion, working with animals. After observing how her colleagues suffered from compassion fatigue and how the industry overall didn’t take care of the people working in it, she began a business to help those in her industry. She found “The Work” of Byron Katie to be a profound tool in helping her with her own stressful thoughts that she’s now begun facilitating the Katie Worksheets for others. Yukari is leading online classes with Anahata on Monday’s at 10am eastern via Zoom. You can also request to join her Facebook Group to discuss “The Work.” Yukari was on the show last summer, Episode #73 if you want to have a listen!

They share about how quarantine has impacted their lives, appreciating the disruption to routines that weren’t supporting their needs, what they are learning about themselves during this experience, learning to settle into the art of not “producing,” eating well to support health, honoring the sacred, the divine feminine and masculine, what they miss most (hint, HUGS), how they take care of themselves and what they are envisioning for the future.
