#198 June Millington “From Fanny to Institute for Musical Arts”

Today I have the ultimate honor to share my conversation with June Millington, a Filipino American guitarist, songwriter, producer, educator, actress and writer. She was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny, which was active from 1970 to 1974. After leaving the band, June went in pursuit of her spiritual path, continued to make music, collaborate, act, write and is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) aka the “Magical Queendom” in Goshen, Massachusetts.

The Institute for the Musical Arts was co-founded with partner Ann Hackler in Northern California in 1986 and received its nonprofit status in 1987.  It operated its studio and programs from Bodega, California’s historic Old Creamery until 2001 when property was purchased in Western Massachusetts for a permanent facility. The institute’s nonprofit mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses.  Rooted in the legacy of progressive equal rights movements, IMA’s development is guided by the visions, needs and concerns of women from a diversity of backgrounds and has grown from the need to nourish ourselves and each other. In addition to its summer programs for girls, IMA offers concerts and workshops year-round in support of its nonprofit mission which, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.

Today June shares about how they are supporting girls at IMA, leaving Fanny, feminism, foremothers, Buddhism, cancer, life lessons and what’s she’s got on the horizon.

Here are the important links for you! IMA and their Summer Programs. Memoir, Land of a Thousand Bridges. And if you want more of the  Fanny story, you can check out where to stream Fanny: The Right to Rock.

You can support IMA by joining in their upcoming November 20th and 27th events, both of which will be livestreamed! And stay tuned for June’s upcoming release, “Snapshots.”

And finally the Go Fund Me for Jean Millington, June’s sister.

Here’s the Full Moon report I read from!

#122 “The Worst Years” Podcast with Sabine, Noelle and Maeve

Today I have the honor of playing an interview I did with the three girls who are the hosts of The Worst Years podcast.

Maeve is an only child with two moms and a dog named Brooklyn. She lived in Brooklyn, NY, until she was eight (hence the name of her dog). This summer, she will turn 11. Maeve is a competitive gymnast and plays clarinet. Her favorite subjects in school are writing, reading, science, art, and anything related to music. Maeve loves hiking and biking and everything outdoors. She’s been going to Wild Earth since she was five. When she grows up, she wants to be an interior designer.

Sabine is the middle child of a big family that lives in a three-generational household. She plays cello and piano and will be 11 this summer. She wants to be a mathematician for NASA when she grows up, so she can study the stars. She became a vegetarian when she saw a billboard about animal rights. When asked what’s her favorite thing to do, she says, “Eat. Sleep. Play. Repeat.”

Noelle at age 10 3/4 is the youngest of two children and lives happily between her amicably split parents. Noelle loves reading and writing. She likes cats, playing the ukulele, comedy, and dislikes the color chartreuse. Noelle sings and plays string bass, and thrives on karaoke in her spare time. Bitten by the theater bug last year in the high school production of Matilda, she has developed a love of the stage, and when she grows up, Noelle wants to be an actor on Broadway!

We learn about the making of their podcast, middle school, their likes and dislikes and life during quarantine!

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ AND the girls’ suggestions: “Joke” by Brandi Carlile, “Would You Be So Kind” by Dodie, and “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish

#28 Theresa’s Nieces (Roadtrippin) / Jamie Sanin (CelebrateWomxn845) “Being a Girl and Supporting Womxn”

Shana’s holding down the studio while Theresa is reporting in from Wisconsin. In Girl Talk, we talk about a new show idea of street interviews of hip grannies that Shana has affectionately dubbed "biddies." Which leads us to a shout out to Antonio from la Voz and his coverage of Grannies Respond and their caravan to the border at Texas to protest the government’s treatment of immigrants seeking asylum. Then Shana and Theresa take a trip down memory lane to talk about life as they remembered it as a 5th grader, what it means to be a cool kid, and the challenges of not feeling like one.

Intro to Theresa’s roadtrippin interview with her nieces Eva (9 years old) and Amelia (12 years old) which was recently recorded on a car trip where Theresa tries to get into the head of a young girl. They are big into Youtube, no surprise there, like to dance, play sports, do math, and go tubing.

Our in studio guest is Jamie Sanin, artist and educator who works for Orange County Arts Council and founded CelebrateWomxn845. Jamie shares her memories of being a 5th grader, how she was big into music and choir and how she continues to be an artist and create art to this day. She enjoys breaking down access and the resistance or fear of art from the viewers perspective. How CelebrateWomxn845 began and how it was consciously inclusive of womxn who also identify as.

Self care talk is all about forgiveness today. Both Shana and Theresa have been exploring forgiveness in their own lives and how it feels like a form of self care, so this will probably not be the end of the conversation. If you’re looking for support in helping yourself forgive someone else, or even yourself, here’s an initial resource that Theresa found which may be helpful to you.

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas from Radio Kingston, and we heard music from our very own Shana Falana. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another!
