immigration – i want what SHE has

278 Belonging with Marielena Ferrer and Phyllis Hjorth

This month’s Spirituality and Politics show with Marielena Ferrer has us talking about belonging. Inspired by the content of this article, Marielena and I talk about what it means to belong, both in our own lives and as it relates to immigrants who struggle to belong at the most fundamental level. In the second half of the show we are joined by Phyllis Hjorth an artist with an exhibit, “The Neighborhood” now showing at the gallery at the Old Dutch Church, 272 Wall Street, Kingston on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-3 and by appointment. Phyllis’s exhibit will showcase paintings done circa 2000 when she had her studio in Hudson, NY. There she met the neighbors who she would take photos of and eventually paint. She shares the richness of the experience and what she hopes to inspire by the showing of these impressive paintings from that time. The exhibit is open until July 27th with an artists reception on July 1st from 2-4pm.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

Our show music is from Shana Falana!

264 Art and HERstory with Viktorsha Uliyanova and Marielena Ferrer

Today I am joined by Viktorsha and Marielena, two participating artists in ASK’s “HERstory” exhibit showing all month in Kingston, NY. Closing ceremony is on March 25th from 3-5pm. We talk about their work, migration, trauma and celebrating women!

Viktorsha Uliyanova is a New York artist whose photographic, fiber and installation works investigate loss, cultural identity and trauma narrated through the prism of memory. Uliyanova’s practice is informed by her upbringing in the Soviet Union, political repression and the immigrant experience. Although her work is grounded in analog photography, her practice often consists of dialogues between different materials including fabric, video and found objects.Through working with cloth and multimedia installations, Uliyanova registers unrecorded traumatic memories that exist outside of historical archive into physical spaces and form. By working with different textures and alternative processes, she points to what has been hidden or lost and makes it visible.

Uliyanova received her BA in English from Hunter College in New York and is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography and Related Media at State University of New Paltz. Her photographs have been featured in publications including Atlas Obscura, Business Insider, Float Magazine, InStyle Russia, Curated by Girls, Susie Magazine. Uliyanova’s work has been exhibited at a number of national and international venues including, Lorimoto Gallery in New York, Participant Inc. New York, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art , 8 Ball Zine at MOMA PS1, Das Gift in Berlin, Collarworks in Troy, among others. Her work has been supported by a number of grants including DiPalo-Williams grant,David Lavallee Grant, Sojourner Truth Fellowship and Research for Creative Projects grant. Uliyanova has taught many workshops over the years and is currently an Instructor of Record at SUNY New Paltz.

Marielena Ferrer, my monthly co-host of Politics and Spirituality on I want what SHE has, is an artist and the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission.

Marielena is also showing her Broken Monarch’s exhibit at SUNY Ulster March 10th-April 14th.

Here’s Tanaaz’s Moon Report and Cory Nakusue’s show the Cosmic Dispatch.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston.

#147 Grace Villamil “Multidisciplinary Artist”

Today’s guest is Grace Villamil, a multidisciplinary artist exploring interconnectivity between humans & nature through installation, video, and sound. She has performed live-video manipulations as accompaniment to electronic & live instruments in venues over the globe. Her work TAYO was done in collaboration with Ione (Pauline Oliveros’s life partner) and Lisa Kelley (founder of the deep listening community) to bring awareness to the separation of children and families & give support to immigrant communities in Kingston and around the world. Most especially this project directly addresses the immigration issue in the United States focusing on the children, women, and families who have been separated by ICE. You can view TAYO at 615 Broadway in Kingston.

TAYO, the inclusive “We” or “Us” in Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, (Grace’s background and where her parents emigrated from in the late 1960s) is a light+sound activation and ongoing community sculpture at Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Plaza in Kingston NY. The TAYO sculpture is an on-going community effort where anyone can add a stuffed animal in solidarity with the children. The stuffed animal is a symbol of the unconditional love children are constantly giving to the world. TAYO is a physical manifestation of the strength & love a community can bring in our most trying and difficult time.

Grace shares her experience as a daughter of immigrant parents who wanted the best for their daughter which to them meant full assimilation, and how she later fell in love with the Philippines after traveling there as an adult. We discuss her piece TAYO, and why it was important for her to bring a shrine to the immigrant families to Kingston. Grace openly shares about her journey into and through her art, why and how she makes her pieces and the fear around creating. You can see images of the pieces we discuss as well as enjoy the meditations that are a part of Coloring Book. Grace writes, “It can be freeing to live in and with the unknown and unanswerable,” and this is what we get to explore through her art. Thanks Grace!

I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving! Want to join in with some gratitude practice? Here are 50 Questions to Inspire Gratitude!

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Freedom Highway on Radio Kingston.
