331 Jo Shuman “Mental Health Nurse”

Jo Shuman is a mental health nurse, in the field for 30 years. She has worked in several settings: Community Mental Health Clinics; Substance Abuse Programs; a State Prison; and has spent the last 10 years working for the Ulster County Mobile Mental Health Team. She just completed  a year long program through Psychedelics Today called Vital: Psychedelic Therapies and Integration. She has been a volunteer for the Restorative Justice 180 Program for 10 years and marvels at the growth she has witnessed in the youth it serves. She is a life long activist and has experienced the power of civil disobedience and getting into good trouble. She is also a proud mother of four in a blended family and grandmother of 8.

Today we get to learn about Jo and her beautiful life, from fighting back against racist behavior in junior high, to protecting the land and humans from uranium mining and the danger in the transport of nuclear weapons, she’s been a long time activist who is really lead by her heart in all she does. We learn about her work and why she’s taken on such impactful roles, what she’s learned about humans and relating with others, and how we can better take care of ourselves and others. Our conversation goes philosophically deep into many of the issues that Jo has been involved with in her work, and she shares her insight eloquently. If you’d like to connect with Jo as a resource in any of the subjects she discussed, please reach out and I will connect you. You can also find her on Instagram.

She’s beginning a monthly gathering for folks who have had a psychedelic or non-ordinary state experience in conjunction with the O+ Festival on July 9th. RSVP if you’d like to be a part of it.

Today Caron shares her story about losing her mom at the age of 13 to a heart attack when her mom was just 39 years old, and how her grief from that affected her life until the point that Caron decided to turn things around. She changed her eating, stopped drinking and tended to her emotional needs. A few weeks after a clear echocardiogram last year, she suffered her own heart attack. Caron shares the lessons learned and what she knows about tending to the needs of her heart, both physically and emotionally. We also talk about the importance of women understanding that we do not always present the same way as men when having a heart attack, and to trust your gut when it comes to advocating for your health.

As someone who’s studied and worked with her own grief Caron also talks about giving ourselves permission to grieve, including how to communicate with your grief. Here’s her TEDxTalk on the subject.

#189 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moon-Day of the month and the return of Marielena Ferrer! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and we’re using that book to seed conversations relating to spirituality and politics. Marielena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is also an artist and will be participating in this weekend’s Art Walk Kingston at The D.R.A.W. as well as the O+ Festival, Oct. 8-10.

As a reminder or for those just tuning into these conversations, the book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we talk about power, money, privilege, and influence via the topics addressed in the New Yorker article, “Life After White Collar Crime,” which excellently address the addictive nature of money and influence, how and why white collar crime has been policed (or not), and the overall lack of ethical and moral boundaries in business and finance circles. What happened to valuing ethics?!?!? Let us know what you think. We’ll certainly be returning to these themes as we move through more of the subjects covered in Espiritualidad y Politica.

#148 Kelly Lyndgaard and Unshattered’s “Ambassadors of Possibility”

Kelly Lyndgaard is the CEO and President of Unshattered and has been a leader and trailblazer for women throughout her lifetime.

In addition to her impact in the non-profit world, she spent 16 years in the IT industry building, running, and transforming technology organizations. In 2015, she stepped away from her executive career to focus solely on the social enterprise she founded named Unshattered.

Kelly is an engineer and physicist by training, but a problem solver and strategist at heart.  Inspired by the strength and commitment of women doing the hard work of recovery, she wanted to help them build them a path forward to sustained sobriety and economic independence. Her heart was broken seeing relapses occur for those who had worked so hard to attain sobriety but had no safe place to return to after recovery.

Kelly is ignited by challenge – in any arena of life – and loves nothing more than seeing potential where others do not and bringing it to life. She’s on a mission to end relapse by providing job skills and employment for those who traditionally have difficulty finding employment.

Unshattered employs women in recovery to craft handbags and accessories out of repurposed materials such as retired military uniforms, sets from Broadway shows, manufacturing scrap and more. They have been awarded by the President of the United States for their creative and effective work in fighting the opioid crisis and were the 2018 Hudson Valley nonprofit of the year.

Unshattered boasts a 0% relapse rate for the women employed with the company.

Kelly and her husband live in Dutchess County, NY. She is a graduate of Taylor University and a Praxis Fellow. Outside of being an entrepreneur she loves reading, conquering challenges, and finding unexpected delight! On her days off you’ll find her curled up with a mug a tea, a stack of books, and her rescue dog, Bell.

You can find her on Instagram and Twitter and learn more about Unshattered at http://www.unshattered.org.

Today we talk about being a physicist and engineer, walking away from it to pursue her passion to help others, overcoming judgment, how choices aren’t character, how to grow a social enterprise, the strength of women, and the power in women helping women. You can purchase an Unshattered handbag from their website and even work with them on custom bags from repurposed materials that are near and dear to your heart. With your purchases AND your donations, they are able to help women coming out of recovery get back on their feet, find an apartment, and gain employment so that they can break the powerful cycle of addiction. Unshattered conservatively estimates that they save the state $103,000 a year in costs associated with addiction and incarceration for each woman they are able to help break the cycle. Become an ambassador of possibility by giving them your support!

#103 “Who We Are” with Musician Shana Falana

Yay, today Shana Falana returns as a guest on the show to get us caught up on all that’s been happening in her world since she stepped away from the show last year, hint a new album, tour and upcoming shows at SXSW! If you haven’t already picked up her new album, “Darkest Light,” you can grab it here.

As we do, Shana and I go deep, discussing consciousness, the stories we tell ourselves, her work to see her own stories, how the world is perfect, cool kids, her sobriety, 12-step and giving it up to a higher power (small-g-o-d), Ram Dass and the blessings of his life, envy, self-pity, how she made her most recent album and the reasons for writing some of the songs we listened to, playing SXSW and how she’s taking care of herself through herbs from Good Fight Herb Co. and Dana’s Golden Hour Botanicals

Oh, and we laugh a lot!

We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/ specifically “Cool Kids,” “Everyone Is Gonna Be Okay,” “Who We Are,” and “Go.”

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.
