304 Spirituality and Politics “Resolving Conflict and Learning”

Today Marielena and I wander through various subjects related to Politics and Spirituality… Starting with Pablo Helguera’s Método de Discursos Sociales. How do you resolve conflict? Start with naming the problem to make sure you actually understand it.

This meanders over to my curiosities about Marina Abromovic’s Rhythm Series (’73-’74), and themes of the sword, and power over others…

Here’s the Article; Education: Why not a race to the top? – that inspires us to think about how to chance education to one focusing on learning to learn, learning to do, learning to live together, learning to be.

What does this bring up? Fear of failure and criticism…Are we all born with resilience? This is a subject for next year… who wants to join in?

Final words from Marielena and Theresa on the end of the year…Marielena suggests some solstice writing on your wishes… and how you can take steps to fulfillment.

258 Amanda Cassiday “Engather – Building Resilient Communities”

It wasn’t until Amanda Cassiday (she/her) lived in a rural village in Burkina Faso that she experienced the resilient power of community, and learned that positive, abundant outcomes are not possible without cultivating the conditions that allow individuals, teams, and communities to thrive. For 15 years, this approach has been a driving force in Amanda’s personal and professional life, from facilitating a woman-led microfinance group in Takaledougou that continues to operate since 2009, to leading design teams responsible for some of the most successful launches in Johnson & Johnson’s history, bringing purpose and consumer needs to the heart of strategy & innovation. She is a maker, a student of permaculture, an advisor, coach, and facilitator to businesses, and most recently the co-founder of Engather which seeks to cultivate prosperous, resilient communities by activating local gift economies.

Our conversation weaves through her experiences and the wisdom that she’s gleaned through them including thoughts about how capitalism and our current economy is not taking care of the needs of the majority, the codependency inherent in capitalism and the patriarchy, how she was able to step away from the toxicity of capitalism and build community in Kingston, and how community interdependence and belonging is essential for our survival. Along those lines, she recommends the book Community by Peter Block as providing some answers to big questions on how to get community back on track.

229 “The Bullied Brain” with Jennifer Fraser

Today my guest is JenniferFraser, best-selling author and award-winning educator. Her online courses and workshops provide dynamic lessons in the impact neuroscience has on personal development and culture change. Her previous book, Teaching Bullies: Zero Tolerance on the Court or in the Classroom, explores what happens when the bully is a teacher or coach. Her new book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health, delves into how bullying affects the brain and how the brain can heal. Learn more at bulliedbrain.com

I’ve been glued to this book which is rich with information about bully culture, the damage it causes our brains, and what we can do about it. It’s a sad reality that our culture is so seeped in bullying and abuse — from children’s playgrounds to the upper echelons of leadership — that we’ve come to normalize the behavior and overlook the wreckage. This bullying paradigm has parents, teachers and coaches believing they must be tough to the point of emotional abuse in order for children to acquire the grit and resilience needed to attain excellence in a competitive world. The research shows however that the bullied brain correlates with failure to perform, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, chronic disease and mental illness.

Some of the topics we get into are the bullying paradigm, toxic masculinity vs. toxic stress, the “invisible” brain damage cause by bullying and toxic stress, open vs. fixed mindsets, building resilience, and in honor of Juneteenth I share some personal thoughts on how slavery was an extreme form of bullying and how we should consider what we’ve learned from Jennifer when understanding how to heal from it’s legacy.
