337 NeeNee Rushie “Big Takeover Band”

NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She’s always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.

NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and  unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets.

When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee’s daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She’s never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.

On today’s show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that’s impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.

Here’s the Tarot reading that I shared from Nikki Foggerty. “I bring love and compassion to myself and embrace all the possibilities that lie ahead.. “

We listened to a song from Amber Rubarth who will be a guest on the show Sept. 9th. She’s also playing this benefit…Neighbors for Neighbors on September 14th supporting People’s Place and the O+ Festival.

Here’s a link to today’s playlist.

227 “Holistic Health” with Cornelia Wathen, Diana Seiler and Alannah Henneberry

Today I get to speak with three members of the Holistic Health Community,Cornelia Wathen, Diana Seiler, and Alannah Henneberry.

Since 2012 HHC has offered Community Holistic Healthcare days at the Marbletown Community Center, 3564 Main Street, Stone Ridge (Route 209), on the third Tuesday of each month, from [4:00][8:00] PM. Then in March 2020 they shifted to offer virtual sessions during the last week of each month. Now that they are back to in person, they continue this virtual offering an ongoing event for out-of-town practitioners, for practitioners whose modalities are not appropriate for shared space (such as sound healing) and for practitioners who prefer virtual work.

During these events practitioners offer a wide range of services including acupuncture, reflexology, chiropractic, massage, Brennan Healing Science, Reiki, OrthoBionomy, NeurOptimal, Biophonton Therapy, One Light Healing Touch, Attunement, Reconnective Healing, Matrix Energetics, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Hypnotherapy, The Emotion Code, Spacious Heart Guidance, Psycho-Spiritual Counseling, Craniosacral Therapy, and much more!

Additionally, they offer a variety of special events, including speakers and workshops related to expanding consciousness and exploring holistic health, and in collaboration with the Rosendale Theatre Collective, they co-sponsor the screening of films related to health and well-being. See their Film Archive  for the full scope of programming.

The Holistic Health Community operates under the principle of Sacred Reciprocity/Paying it Forward. So, though there is no charge for services, they encourage sacred reciprocity by giving a donation, by doing volunteer work or by an act of loving kindness for someone in need. No one is turned away.

A little about my guests before we get into the conversation:

Cornelia Wathen regularly offers Brennan Healing Science and Emotion Code work at HHC events. She is one of the founders of The Holistic Health Community, and coordinates the Community Holistic Healthcare Days and Virtual Holistic Healthcare Weeks.

Diana Seiler is a licensed Thai Massage practitioner and instructor and has been serving with the Holistic Health Community for several years, most recently overseeing their Regenerative Farming: Soil to Soul Program.

And finally, Alannah Henneberry is an energy worker and certified Shamanic Reiki Healing Master. She has joined their mission to help advance the Holistic Health Community’s Holistic Healthcare to the People! initiative, aiming to make holistic healthcare accessible to locally underserved communities through their Outreach Program.

#196 Shulamit Elson “Grief and Sound Healing”

Today I have the honor of speaking with Shulamit Elson, and we begin the show hearing about her experience in losing her daughter to leukemia just over a year ago and how she moved through the tremendous grief of this experience. This flows into a conversation about Shulamit’s own journey into finding her soul’s purpose and the healing sounds that form the basis of her work today.  She is the creator of MediSounds Meditation, and the Director of MediSounds, as well as the founder of The Great Octave Foundation. She has taught MediSounds Meditation and vocal sound-based mindfulness practices worldwide, in places as diverse as Esalen and Omega Institutes, Tibet House in NYC, meditation workshops in Andalusia, Spain and Oxford, England, the Sri Auribindo Auroville community in India, and in Israel. Under the auspices of The Great Octave Foundation, her activities have included work throughout Israel during a particularly fraught time of conflict in 2002,  HIV positive men and women in Mexico City, and returning Iraq war veterans. In 2001 Shulamit was honored to give the keynote address in Washington, DC to introduce US Congressional Bill H. R. 808 to create a Cabinet Level Department of Peace.

Prior to creating MediSounds Meditation, Shulamit had a 20-year career in business consulting and investment banking. Her positions included Manager of Training and Development at Sandoz Inc. and Director of Organizational Communications at the public relations firm Hill & Knowlton. As President of her own independent consulting firm, Shulamit advised on issues of communication and organizational development at such corporations as Ford Motor Company, United States Lines, Nabisco Brands, and Irving Trust.

Shulamit is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Kabbalah of Prayer ~Sacred Sounds and the Soul’s Journey, and the creator of the newly-released CD MediSounds ~ The Path to Wholeness; as well as Beyond Words ~ Sacred Sounds of the Tree of Life; as well as Vibration ~ Shulamit and the Drepung Gomang Buddhist Monks.

P.S. at the end of the show I append my weekly “pre-show” banter with Warren and Manuel who share with me thoughts about being a people pleaser!
