Today’s guest is Silvia Forni, a photographer with a passion for Tarot cards. Raised in Florence, Italy with both a great aunt and mother who were psychics, it was normal for the family to get tarot readings on weekends to better prepare for the following week. Silvia began first reading the Tarot at the age of 19 and has continued to be enthralled with the mystery and art of the Tarot. Marielena walks us through what the Tarot reveals to her in the moment as we contemplate the beginning of 2023. Inspired by my weekly chat with Warren and Manuel we revisit the subject of confidence vs. questioning. A favorite quote to sum up that part of the conversation, “Wise people are full of doubt, but the idiots are completely sure.”

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena.

The second Monday of the month is inspired by the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which was published 10 years ago, of which Mariaelena was a contributor. She is also the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission.

March 14th is National Learn About Butterflies Day, and because Marielena has been working on an art installation involving 5000 butterflies, she shares why they are important to her, and a bit about her exhibit, opening May 6th, 2022 at the Dorsky Museum, closing May 8th.

Then we move right along to the biggest news in spirituality and politics today, the invasion of Ukraine. This includes a conversation about compassion inspired by this article. Marielena shares her assessment of the situation through the lens of the Tarot and then shares a meditation for all of us to practice on our own, to meditate on the key cards, the Emperor and the Hierophant, the majors players in what is unfolding at this moment.

Finally, we end the show with a little Moon love, and a share from Tanaaz about this week’s Full Moon Astrology.

It’s the second Moonday of the month and that means, the return of Marielena Ferrer-Harrington! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and she feels it’s time to start revisiting these subjects from today’s lens. Mariaelena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. You can listen to her previous interview from September of 2020 where we speak more about her life and her work, and here’s our first conversation about Spirituality and Politics.

The book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we continue and expand upon the history and meaning of politics and spirituality, how they are related, why there connection is important and also Marielena explains how the Tarot is an important tool for her in understanding this subject as seen through the lens of the archetypes of the Major Arcana. Lydia Willoughby, Founder & General Manager of Sassafras Mercantile comes from a family of pine tree farmers and geologists in South Carolina. As shopkeep and general manager Lydia (she) has always been drawn to plant life and soil. With her Moon in the 12th House, and Sun in the 8th House, Lydia’s work revolves around exchange and nurturance in integrating the unknown and the mysterious into accessible platforms for transformation and resolution built on systems of care. Lydia offers tarot readings from a queer, trauma-informed perspective that engages the cycle of life, death, and rebirth through the collective human experience. She studied herbalism with Dina Falconi, and studied tarot in person with Lindsay Mack and Audrey Gilbert. Lydia completed a permaculture design certification course with Sowing Solutions in Shelburne Falls, MA. 

Sassafras Mercantile was founded with an interest in connecting community knowledge to personal liberation, and convening a beautiful, inclusive, queer, feminist, anti-racist space that asks questions with curiosity and answers with a full heart and a little bit of magic in the City of Kingston, NY.

Today we chatted about Lydia’s background and relationship to land and trees, how she got into the work she does today which is very multifaceted but also naturally connected and aligned. She shares a new project at Sassafras, the monthly wellness subscription box, how Tarot fits into her life and how she offers it to others, and a whole lot more.
