293 The O+ show with Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price

Today I share my conversation with Kingston High School Art Teachers Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price about their students’ participation in the O+ Festival. Amy Purdy is the Lead Art Teacher at the High School and works with the National Art Honor Society and teaches ceramics and jewelry. Jenn Brannigan-Tyler teaches the Advanced Painting art students, and Jessica Price teaches the Digital Photo students. Our conversation touches on their students’ experience in interpreting the festival theme FORWARD and gives us a sneak peek at how we can experience their offerings during the O+ Festival. The painting and photo students will have their work displayed at store fronts in Uptown Kingston, and Amy Purdy and students’ TASK party will be happening on Saturday, October 7th from 3-5pm at the YWCA, 209 Clinton Avenue, Kingston, NY.

Here is the Oliver Herring TASK party info.

In the second half of the show I play music from a few of this year’s O+ Festival musicians. If you’re listening via podcast instead of the radio archive, you’ll have to check them out on the playlist. Here’s today’s playlist.

Here’s your Full Moon Report! “The Aries Full Moon holds fantastic potential for helping us to take our ideas from our minds and into physical form. There is an entrepreneurial flow that comes when Aries energy is strong, so use it to your advantage.”

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

Our show music is from Shana Falana!

#198 June Millington “From Fanny to Institute for Musical Arts”

Today I have the ultimate honor to share my conversation with June Millington, a Filipino American guitarist, songwriter, producer, educator, actress and writer. She was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny, which was active from 1970 to 1974. After leaving the band, June went in pursuit of her spiritual path, continued to make music, collaborate, act, write and is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) aka the “Magical Queendom” in Goshen, Massachusetts.

The Institute for the Musical Arts was co-founded with partner Ann Hackler in Northern California in 1986 and received its nonprofit status in 1987.  It operated its studio and programs from Bodega, California’s historic Old Creamery until 2001 when property was purchased in Western Massachusetts for a permanent facility. The institute’s nonprofit mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses.  Rooted in the legacy of progressive equal rights movements, IMA’s development is guided by the visions, needs and concerns of women from a diversity of backgrounds and has grown from the need to nourish ourselves and each other. In addition to its summer programs for girls, IMA offers concerts and workshops year-round in support of its nonprofit mission which, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.

Today June shares about how they are supporting girls at IMA, leaving Fanny, feminism, foremothers, Buddhism, cancer, life lessons and what’s she’s got on the horizon.

Here are the important links for you! IMA and their Summer Programs. Memoir, Land of a Thousand Bridges. And if you want more of the  Fanny story, you can check out where to stream Fanny: The Right to Rock.

You can support IMA by joining in their upcoming November 20th and 27th events, both of which will be livestreamed! And stay tuned for June’s upcoming release, “Snapshots.”

You can check out June’s TEDxTalk, “Rocking the Boat: How Playing Like a Girl Can Change the World.”

Linking here also to Ann Hackler’s TEDx Talk, “Leading from the Kitchen.”

And finally the Go Fund Me for Jean Millington, June’s sister.

Here’s the Full Moon report I read from!

#149 Shauna Keating and Erin Barth-Dwyer “Hudson Valley Tech Meetup”

Shauna Keating has a pretty awesome career as a user experience designer, teaches design for the web as an adjunct professor, and is a mentor at Thinkful‘s UX/UI Design program. She’s serving as President of AIGA Upstate New York and is a Co-Organizer and Emcee of the Hudson Valley Tech Meetup. She believes in building inclusive and friendly software. A work-life balance is also important to her, and that includes time for roller derby.

Erin Barth-Dwyer handles Marketing and Business Development at Moonfarmer, keeping the people of earth connected with all the exciting work they do. Prior to that she was in radio and television and worked for a non-profit supporting the disabled. She’s a decent musician, a poetaster, a wannabe illustrator, and a culinary mad-scientist. Sometimes she slips away from the world to get lost in the mountains with her dog, Garbo. She is deeply committed to getting involved in her community and spends time volunteering with Citizen Action NY. Last BUT NOT least, she’s co-host of HVtech too!

Topics for today include, imposter syndrome, beginner’s mind, reinventing after unemployment, pandemic life, accessibility in tech, alt-text, UX/UI, story telling, roller derby and the harp.

Here’s an article authored by Shauna on Human Centered Design.

HV Tech has it’s next meetup on Wednesday, December 16th at 6pm, and they’re doing “Lightning Talks,” very short presentations lasting just a few minutes on a wide variety of exciting topics. I’ll be tuning in. Hope to see you there!

#102 “Birthing Your Creations” with Julia Indichova of Fertile Heart and Fertile Hearted Human

Today’s show is dedicated to birthing… all things really, but we’re hyper-focused on birthing babies. My guest today, Julia Indichova, is the author of Inconceivable and The Fertile Female. Her work has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Discovery Health, NPR’s 51%, Good Morning America, Tablet Magazine, Huffington Post and more. After 9/11 she initiated the 9/11 Bowing Project documented in her most recent book, One-Heart Revolution: The Perils of Positive Thinking on the Road to Peace. She is the founder of FertileHeart.com and FertileHeartedHuman.org.

She shares the highlights of her own birthing story, how she was diagnosed with high FSH and told by the fertility doctors she had no chance of conceiving naturally. Because she wasn’t ready to give up she pursued things on her own, eventually conceiving her child and along with it, a methodology to help others birth their own children. This show is full of useful information whether you are trying to birth a child or some special project in your life. Check your energy levels, do you feel alive? Listen to your own truth, not the consciousness that’s projected upon us. Pay attention to your orphans, you’re gonna have to tune in to understand that one! Pay more attention to inspiration than information. Stop thrashing. These are just some of the nuggets that Julia teaches in her classes. She has a free talk tonight, January 8th at 8pm and a new workshop beginning on January 15th. For all of you looking to “Birth Your Next Creation and Repair the Earth,” the work following her recent book One-Heart Revolution… stay tuned to her website and Instagram account.

#25 Cal Patch (Crochet, Entrepeneur) / Hawley Hussie (HHArtLab) “Happiness and Freedom…that’s SUCCESS”

In this week’s Girl Talk, Shana shares a tip on a new podcast from Dana Falsetti, a self defined "fat" yoga teacher who’s podcast dives into confidence, authenticity, critical thinking, body justice, inclusivity and awareness. Theresa offers up another Morning Matcha podcast on emotional metabolism with Dr. Habib Sadeghi which she found helpful in better understanding the benefits of mindfulness and not collecting residual emotional build up from moment to moment.

HOT FLASH! Shana’s having a hot flash. She’s pissed. A woman who will remain unnamed is critical of 12 step programs, and Shana believes, it’s all hands on deck. We are in a crisis and these programs are helping people. Haters should just "shut up!"

Our first guest Cal Patch joins us in the studio to talk about moving through her dreams of becoming a designer and a shopkeeper to finding her happy place on a mini-farm in the Hudson Valley where she can crochet, sew, weave, make art, and teach her craft to those who want to learn. She’s written a book on pattern making which you can buy from your local bookstore, just ask them to order it for you. Find her in the Valley and beyond teaching and bring your maker self alive.

Hawley Hussey, artist, writer, occasional performer, a living room lounge singer, cold water swimmer, Coney Island Mermaid, educator and activist joins us in the studio to talk about how she’s created her current life affirming gig at the HHArtLab which is a contemporary art makers space where newly arrived immigrants and special needs children can deepen their personal art practice and build community. Hawley shares her values in life and how they help her make decisions about what to do and how to do it. She finishes up by serenading Shana and Theresa with her rendition of "God’s Plan" by Drake.

Tomorrow’s the New Moon, and Theresa shared Mystic Mamma’s beautiful words about loving our whole selves, that’s ALL the parts!

Stay tuned for next week’s show where we invite Tiziana Agnello, owner of Love Thy Beast, and Jill Bressler, Designer turned User Experience expert. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another.
