white privilege – i want what SHE has

#128 “Kingston Reads About Racism” with Kathy Sellitti and Charlotte Adamis

Joining me today are Kathy Sellitti, Assistant Principal at Kingston High School and Charlotte Adamis, School Librarian, J. Watson Bailey Middle School in Kingston, two of the several organizers of “Kingston Reads About Racism” talking about the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Their next community discussions will take place, Thursday, July 16th and Thursday July 31. Please RSVP in advance to get the call information. You can listen in to their first discussion here.

Today they share how this started in their schools with their colleagues and how they’ve seen some pretty significant transformation amongst themselves and their peers. We dig into some of the subjects of the book like white privilege and police brutality and what we’ve all learned about our privilege from reading this book and expanding our awareness of the experiences of black and brown people. They share resources that have been helpful to them including the work of Bettina Love, author of We Want To Do More Than Survive, Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.

I am grateful to these women for bringing this conversation to our community and being willing to share personally on the show today. I look forward to joining in with the continuing community conversations to follow.

As mentioned, Shaniqua Bowden also touched on this book along with Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race (by Reni Eddo-Lodge) during her show the Nubian Cafe with guests Erica Brown and Rashida Tyler back on January. Check it out!

Today’s show was engineered Nick Panken from radiokingston.org

We also heard music from Shana Falana!

#24 Jen Shagawat (Shellshag, Starcleaners) “Freedoms and Staying True to Your Dreams Through it All”

It’s Independence Day, and today we’re Girl Talking about the meaning of independence for ourselves and for everyone. For those of you wanting to work on your own white privilege, check out Wild Mystic Woman on Instagram.

Shana and Theresa continue the conversation around eating habits and healing ourselves, freeing ourselves you might say from the emotional pull of food, and Shana shares from her journaling on her own personal beliefs. If you want support in this conversation around intuitive eating, tune into the Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison.

We also get to hear a fun and wild ride of an interview Shana did with her original "i want what SHE has" gal pal, Jen Shagawat, musician and producer, owner of Jewel Street Studio in Brooklyn, NY, drummer and singer for the band Shellshag, co-creator of Shellshonic Shag-O-Vision and owner of Starcleaner Records. Check out Jen’s doc on the band the Slits HERE! Whew…enjoy the show, and let’s work together to make sure all beings are safe, happy and free!

Next week’s guests are Cal Patch, maker extraordinaire and Theresa’s sewing guru, and Hawley Hussey, artist, writer, educator and activist. Until then, Love YOURSELF and uplift one another!!!
