yoga – i want what SHE has

305 Alana Connelly “From Grief to Joy”

Alana Connelly has been an intuitive her whole life, and studying the healing arts for over 25 years. She struggled to find her way after her husband passed in his early 40’s. Watching someone you love more than life itself leave this world leaves an indescribable pain and loss. After allowing herself the time to feel the overwhelming sadness, she found herself in Bali in a yoga teacher training that didn’t go as planned, but it allowed her to reconnect with herself and eventually pursue a path of helping others by opening her own wellness center,  a non-profit bakery to support local women, and a women’s artisan co-op. While some projects failed, others succeeded but brought up questions about her life’s purpose, who she is, including a lot of self doubt and uncertainties. She found herself sitting with more hurt, anger, sadness and pain, but she knew it was the only way through. She’s now living a life that she enjoys and has found happiness again. As a registered vet tech for over 28 years, she’s now pursuing a PhD program in clinical psychology with a focus on mind, body and spirit with the hope that she will help others find the joy in life no matter what happens.

Today she shares about allowing herself to sit in the sadness, the hurt, and pain in order to really move through the grief, how a yoga teacher training changed her life and taught her about how the other side of fear is freedom. She’s living that freedom today despite life’s ups and downs, practicing letting go of expectations and loving herself unconditionally.

Alana recently contributed to a book titled Do More Stupid Things, a book that celebrates those who dare to live outside the lines. These stories will remind you that taking risks and self belief are the key ingredients to magic and miracles. It’s not easy to go against the grain, but as you’ll see in this book, it offers huge rewards for the brave ones willing to “do stupid things.”

Alana’s work can be found at http://www.wildrootsyogawellness.com and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wildroots_wellness/

#132 Talking Socially Distanced Yoga with Juliana Machado, Jacquelyn Nash and Carisa Borrello

Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers…

Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and “Life of a Yogi” 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the “house of no judgement” where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.

Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn’s classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn’s approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.

Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly’s 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of  Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts – bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.

Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa’s sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.

Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.

Heya friends! Today I am joined by ALL of the ladies I co-create with over at Anahata. Allow me to introduce:

She is the mother of two children and enjoys writing, philosophy, design and connecting with the Earth. Ana has a B.A. in Philosophy from Boston College and an M.A. in Eastern Classics from St. John’s College (Santa Fe). She teaches Saturdays at 10am Eastern with Anahata via IG Live. Jennifer was a guest on the show in early 2019 for Episode #51.

Yukari Ogawa, a vet tech who traveled to the US despite only speaking enough English to introduce herself in order to attend a school that would allow her to pursue her passion, working with animals. After observing how her colleagues suffered from compassion fatigue and how the industry overall didn’t take care of the people working in it, she began a business to help those in her industry. She found “The Work” of Byron Katie to be a profound tool in helping her with her own stressful thoughts that she’s now begun facilitating the Katie Worksheets for others. Yukari is leading online classes with Anahata on Monday’s at 10am eastern via Zoom. You can also request to join her Facebook Group to discuss “The Work.” Yukari was on the show last summer, Episode #73 if you want to have a listen!

#113 Leach Gooch “Four Minutes a Day”

Yay! Brainy Fox is back! Our theme music by Shana Falana rides again!!! Ida and I check in, get deep about fear and thriving and then I play an interview with Leah Gooch of Four Minutes a Day who offers Reiki, Yoga, and Meditation. Leah shares some of her journey to and through Reiki and how she does remote distant Reiki services. I attempt to analogize this phenomenon with Quantum Physics. If anyone out there really understands Quantum Physics/Mechanics, please come and be a guest on my show! Leah, otherwise known as Gooch, also shares her work in jails and prisons and talks a bit about her experience there and the profound shifts she’s seen in her students from experiencing yoga and meditation with one another. She’s been offering a daily 4 minute meditation, sent via email, to everyone on her mailing list and expects to continue throughout the physical distancing period we are going through. She has a few remaining free remote Reiki sessions available and thereafter offers her work on a sliding scale. She’s awesome and wonderful, and I am grateful for her work here on this planet. Gooch’s words of advice for what we’re going through right now…”call your Mother, be kind to others and to yourself.” Yes, yes, yes.

#78 Endometriosis with Dr. Amy Novatt and Mel Toth

Wow, today was a powerful show of Mel Toth sharing her journey with Endometriosis. We start the conversation with Dr. Amy Novatt, Gynecologist and women’s health advocate, explaining what Endometriosis is, how to recognize the symptoms of the disease, why it’s hard to diagnose and treat, and how to manage the symptoms. Whether or not you suffer from this disease or are experiencing some other health concern, it seems there’s evidence enough for all of us to take the best care of ourselves as possible, reduce stress, eat nutritionally and prioritize our own health.

After this intro to "Endo," we get to learn about Mel, how she began her teaching career first instructing 4th graders and now teaching yoga at Shakti Woodstock and The Yoga House in Kingston. Mel openly and bravely shares the challenges that she’s faced with her health from painful and debilitating periods where she would often bleed for two weeks to the diagnosis of Endometriosis after discovering a large (22cm) mass on her ovary. After her first surgery, doctors warned her that if she wanted children she should begin to think about that as the Endometriosis could make it more difficult down the road. That sparked a journey to figure out what to do about children, leading to some time not worrying about it and then trying to get pregnant with the use of fertility enhancing drugs. Tune in to hear all that unfolds for Mel and her journey through fertility and surgery. She’s now on a path of deep self care, supported by a Canadian doctor and her practice, The Natural Endo Movement.

I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Mel and was enraptured by her story. I hope to get her back on soon to go deeper into some of the big issues that she’s so gracefully navigating!

#69 Shawn Harrison, Cory Nakasue and Nidhi Adhiya-Huba “Clarity of Mind + Wisdom of Body”

Talking with yoginis and teachers, Shawn Harrison, Cory Nakasue and Nidhi Adhiya-Huba about the why and how of what they do, listening to the wisdom of the body, the return of the feminine, the benefits of yoga and meditation, getting out of boxes and structure and into chaos and freedom, women’s circles, rituals and what their own personal daily self care practices look like.

#25 Cal Patch (Crochet, Entrepeneur) / Hawley Hussie (HHArtLab) “Happiness and Freedom…that’s SUCCESS”

In this week’s Girl Talk, Shana shares a tip on a new podcast from Dana Falsetti, a self defined "fat" yoga teacher who’s podcast dives into confidence, authenticity, critical thinking, body justice, inclusivity and awareness. Theresa offers up another Morning Matcha podcast on emotional metabolism with Dr. Habib Sadeghi which she found helpful in better understanding the benefits of mindfulness and not collecting residual emotional build up from moment to moment.

HOT FLASH! Shana’s having a hot flash. She’s pissed. A woman who will remain unnamed is critical of 12 step programs, and Shana believes, it’s all hands on deck. We are in a crisis and these programs are helping people. Haters should just "shut up!"

Our first guest Cal Patch joins us in the studio to talk about moving through her dreams of becoming a designer and a shopkeeper to finding her happy place on a mini-farm in the Hudson Valley where she can crochet, sew, weave, make art, and teach her craft to those who want to learn. She’s written a book on pattern making which you can buy from your local bookstore, just ask them to order it for you. Find her in the Valley and beyond teaching and bring your maker self alive.

Hawley Hussey, artist, writer, occasional performer, a living room lounge singer, cold water swimmer, Coney Island Mermaid, educator and activist joins us in the studio to talk about how she’s created her current life affirming gig at the HHArtLab which is a contemporary art makers space where newly arrived immigrants and special needs children can deepen their personal art practice and build community. Hawley shares her values in life and how they help her make decisions about what to do and how to do it. She finishes up by serenading Shana and Theresa with her rendition of "God’s Plan" by Drake.

Tomorrow’s the New Moon, and Theresa shared Mystic Mamma’s beautiful words about loving our whole selves, that’s ALL the parts!

Stay tuned for next week’s show where we invite Tiziana Agnello, owner of Love Thy Beast, and Jill Bressler, Designer turned User Experience expert. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another.
