274 Kristin Kessler “Working Motherhood”

Today on the show I am joined by Kristin Kessler, a registered dietitian, yoga teacher, and advocate for equitable access to nutritious food and opportunities to live a healthful lifestyle. She has worked across multiple sectors of the field of nutrition for the past 12 years, including at PR agencies and in community nutrition, like at Food Bank For New York City. She also has a long-held passion for women’s rights and equitable opportunities in all aspects of life, particularly the workforce, something she credits to watching her mom work hard and excel in her career while raising her as a single mother after her parents divorced. Herself a new mother of an infant who works outside of the home, she is seeing the world through new eyes and experiencing how much of it isn’t set up for the success of birthing people, from prenatal to perinatal to postnatal and beyond.

Originally from New Orleans with a good, long stint in Dallas and Austin, Texas before making her way up to Brooklyn, she now resides in Woodstock, where she lives with her husband, infant son, and dog. She works for the City of Kingston’s Health and Wellness Department, where she creates policy, system, and environmental changes to help make healthy choices an easier choice in Kingston for everyone.

How do we move from surviving to thriving in motherhood? Today is an honest conversation on the practical challenges of motherhood from navigating the emotions and personal and public expectations on returning to work to the practical aspects of juggling nursing, pumping, childcare and costs with a work schedule. Kristin shares personal stories that perfectly illustrate why we need better systems in place to support working mothers and parents. So much of this comes down to our value system which practically speaking is largely based upon productivity and finance in a patriarchal system. It’s time for a change!

Here is the article I mentioned related to expenditure for child care in the US compared with other wealthy countries, and here’s the previous episode where I discussed child care operations with a former daycare provider.

Ahhhh, and then I end the show with a little moon reporting from Tanaaz in honor of Friday’s New Moon!

You can get your tickets to The Goddess Party here!

273 “Until Justice Just Is” with Isis Benitez and Marielena Ferrer

This month on Spirituality and Politics, Marielena and I are joined by Isis Benitez, Lead Director of Communications, Advocacy and Outreach at the YWCA Ulster County. Isis shares the details behind the “Until Justice Just Is” campaign that is underway this week in Kingston and Poughkeepsie featuring film screenings and rallies with speakers all intended to help folks understand the impacts of racism and what we can do to put an end to it. Not only is this campaign creating a safe space for people to talk about racism and its painful effects, but it is also a place to learn more about what you can do to help combat it. Isis is also interested in understanding where the community is as it relates to racism and how we can work together to ends its insidious nature. Because it’s mental health awareness month, we spend some time talking about the impacts racism and bullying have on mental health. You can reach Isis at ibenitez@ywcaulstercounty.org.

272 Kristin Moshonas “Mindfulness and Mental Health”

Today’s guest is Kristin Moshonas. A yogi for most of her adult life, Kristin embraced a lifestyle of wellness, mindfulness and spirit with the birth of her children, becoming a yoga teacher, then therapist (IAYT 1,000 – HR), and finally adding a more strategic role as Director of Programming, NY for non-profit, Kula for Karma (2017). It is here that she began to delve more deeply into the space of trauma-based healing practices and work with underserved populations. She has co-created, directed and taught in therapeutic programs across the city from The Doe Fund to Covenant House, The Hope Program to Bellevue Hospital and NYC’s Dept. of Education, in the process realizing that helping those who are struggling to find moments of peace and pathways to self-empowerment and growth are what truly give the practice and her teaching purpose. Kristin calls upon previous career experience as a creative marketing executive (Conde Nast, Hearst, Time Inc.) to develop special brand initiatives for Kula, such as the currently running conversation series, Begin Again, and Sam Waterston hosted documentary series, Visionaries (PBS), featuring her work at The Hope Program.

Most recently, she joined the team at Access Mindfulness as Executive Director. AM was born
through an open-hearted vision to help make the transformative power of mindful awareness
accessible to all, working with children, adolescents, full school communities and other non-
profits. In this new role, Kristin adds teaching certifications in MBSR and Inner Strength
Foundation and looks forward to growing the awareness of AM in both NYC and The Hudson
Valley.

Deeply committed to supporting mindful community, she launched Ten of Zen at the start of the
pandemic shutdown, a free daily guided meditation. Over two years later, this remains a Friday
morning offering via her personal social channels, open to any and all who wish to participate.

Kristin is a graduate of The University of Vermont and The Sorbonne and finds great joy as a ski instructor, hiker, world explorer and mom to two teenage boys to men.

Today Kristin and I talk about mental health, how it impacts our overall health and relates to so many aspects of living a rich life, and how to tend to it. We learn about Kristin’s path to mindfulness, what that looks like for her, and the work she does at Kula and Access Mindfulness. We hope our conversation inspires you to nurture your mental health daily!

271 Heather Duke “Center for Symbolic Studies” and Daphne Fiori-Wood “St. Baldrick’s”

Today I enjoyed speaking with Heather Duke – who is one of the sparkly beings and co-creators over at the Center for Symbolic Studies. A non-profit with a mission to inspire nature-based spirituality, leading to personal growth and communal awareness. Founded by Drs. Robin and Stephen Larsen, inspired by the works of friend and mentor Joseph Campbell- The Center for Symbolic Studies has been offering a window into the Mythic Imagination for over 30 years through seasonal festivals, Dream Workshops, sacred teaching by Shamans from around the world, lectures, and celebrations of art and dance surrounded and inspired by nature.

Register for their Beltane Festival on May 20th, rain date, May 21st.

Heather talks about her own work in neurofeedback, dreams, Beltane and the Center’s other happenings, Vanaver Caravan, Wild Arts, nature and community. You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Later in the show I share my conversation with Daphne Fiori-Wood who is shaving her hair on April 29th to raise money for childhood cancer research with St. Baldrick’s. Research is hope for kids with cancer, but donations to find cures have been down since 2020. She will also be donating her hair to Wigs forKids!, wigsforkids.org, at the end of the event. Your gift will give kids hope, supporting the best research across the country, through the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants. Cancer kills more of our kids than any other disease. Can you help? Thank you!

269 The Impact of Media with Marielena Ferrer

On this month’s installment of Spirituality and Politics, Marielena Ferrer and I discuss the state of Media today and it’s impact on the younger generation. This conversation was inspired by a comment Marielena heard about how media fails to inspire hope for the future or action to build a better future. Plus we randomly discuss families and the lack of support for them in today’s world. Hmmmm, personal experience, ha!

For those of you new or not to Human Design, this conversation will give you much to contemplate when it comes to understanding you and your energy body. Yes, we cover some of the basics about the aura types, but we also talk practically about how an understanding of your own design will assist you in living your true self and relating to others in a more compassionate and easeful way.

267 Dedicated to the Women in My Life

Today I take a trip down memory lane to honor and recognize some of the women I’ve been close to in my life who have shaped me and my life in some way. During Women’s History Month we tend to focus on the famous or unrecognized female “pioneers,” but a big theme in this show is that “women’s work” is so often undervalued and not rewarded in the same way as most “achievements” are celebrated. This show is me thanking all of the women in my life regardless of “achievement.” Your existence is enough! I couldn’t name and appreciate all of them and could have shared even more than I did about those I did recognize, but it’s a start of a practice that I hope to engage with more regularly. Here are the ones I celebrated on today’s show. My Great-Grandmother Viola Dietrich, Grandmother Shirley Cirillo, Grandmother Dorothy Widmann, Mom Sandra Widmann, Aunt and God-Mother Dawn Scarce, Sister Angela Widmann, first friend Stefanie Mulby (Rice), close pals from elementary, middle and high school Jodi Roberts (Finzel), Pamela Toshner (Stubbe) and Ann Casamassa, college Stephanie Berry (Sweeney) and Mary Lindsley, law school Karen O’Keeffe, Sandy Steinman and Jane Sigda, the Squirrels Joyce Manalo, Tiziana Agnello, Emily Furr and Belinda Downey, first Hudson Valley friend Sara Schneller and then a few of the many amazing women in the Hudson Valley who I am so grateful to call friends, Shana Falana, Neslihan Ulus Lord and Tarah Gay. Special shout outs to Tara Sanders for inspiring this show (and being a most amazing friend), Melissa Morse for being on “my team” in elementary school, Rita Bolla Lapinel, Shawn Harrison, Sarah Carlson, Carla Rozman and Marielena Ferrer who’ve been especially present in the past few years. There are so many who I can think of writing this who I left out like Erin Widmann (Kujawa) duh!, Holly Egan Arnold, Tracy Bettenhausen Jennings, Wendy Wein White, Melissa Walkowiak, Brandie Tetzlaff (McPherson), Claudia Beck (Giesie), Angela Hamilton (Stubbe), Connie DeBie-Bailey, Kathy Obler (Ben’s Mom), and of course my nieces! There are others. I don’t know how to end it. I feel like making an art project to honor them all. I love each of you and thank you for being a part of my long and winding life.

Here’s the playlist I mentioned for those interested in hearing more of the songs that got me through college and beyond.

265 “The Art of Living” with Isabel Cotarelo and Marielena Ferrer

On this month’s installment of Spirituality and Politics, Marelena Ferrer and I are joined by Isabel Cotarelo, an artist who’s life experiences express through her work. “The need to modify the contiguous space and the objects in it has always emanated as an irresistible force. The experiences that I have had throughout my life have changed the output of that force. As a Latina growing up in a matriarchal family, the useful craft making process and cooking that bonded members and generated stories and guidance are now part of my story and a repository from where I can launch a new re-invention of self.”

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and living and working in Kingston, NY, Isabel studied Fine Art and Counseling, has received numerous grants and awards and exhibited internationally since 1983.

She co-curated the exhibit at the Arts Society of Kingston featuring women from around the globe to Celebrate “HERstory.”

Our conversation weaves through the experiences of being a woman, being raised in a matriarchal family, the importance of spaces for women and Isabel’s own HERstory.
