In today’s show Rakel, host of Satelite of Love, is sitting in for Theresa, and has invited artist and print maker Aurora Brush into the studio to discuss being a woman in print making, her creative practice and the new community zine Rakel and Aurora, and two other collaborators, have recently launched.

Aurora Brush is an alchemist who uses the processes of print and book making to manifest dreams into reality. They are a queer divinatory artist, tarot deck creator, print and book maker living in Kingston NY.  Aurora is the founder,  editor, and producer of Cosmic Dog House Press, an independent publishing service located here in midtown Kingston!

This month’s Spirituality and Politics show with Marielena Ferrer has us talking about belonging. Inspired by the content of this article, Marielena and I talk about what it means to belong, both in our own lives and as it relates to immigrants who struggle to belong at the most fundamental level. In the second half of the show we are joined by Phyllis Hjorth an artist with an exhibit, “The Neighborhood” now showing at the gallery at the Old Dutch Church, 272 Wall Street, Kingston on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-3 and by appointment. Phyllis’s exhibit will showcase paintings done circa 2000 when she had her studio in Hudson, NY. There she met the neighbors who she would take photos of and eventually paint. She shares the richness of the experience and what she hopes to inspire by the showing of these impressive paintings from that time. The exhibit is open until July 27th with an artists reception on July 1st from 2-4pm.

On this month’s installment of Spirituality and Politics, Marelena Ferrer and I are joined by Isabel Cotarelo, an artist who’s life experiences express through her work. “The need to modify the contiguous space and the objects in it has always emanated as an irresistible force. The experiences that I have had throughout my life have changed the output of that force. As a Latina growing up in a matriarchal family, the useful craft making process and cooking that bonded members and generated stories and guidance are now part of my story and a repository from where I can launch a new re-invention of self.”

​Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and living and working in Kingston, NY, Isabel studied Fine Art and Counseling, has received numerous grants and awards and exhibited internationally since 1983.

She co-curated the exhibit at the Arts Society of Kingston featuring women from around the globe to Celebrate “HERstory.”

Our conversation weaves through the experiences of being a woman, being raised in a matriarchal family, the importance of spaces for women and Isabel’s own HERstory.

Happy New Moon, Lunar New Year, Imbolc and Black History Month!

Today I am honored to welcome The Poet Gold, Artivist, Poet, Author, Teaching Artist and Radio Host, and Suprina, Sculpturist and Artivist. They are collaborators and the Executive Producers of the video “Say Their Names,” premiering February 1st at 7pm eastern. (Poet Gold and Suprina’s interview starts around minute 36)

Like so many Americans The Poet Gold @_poetgold_ and Suprina @suprinasculpture struggled to understand the individual and cultural meaning of the murder of George Floyd. Through ordinary conversation, they found out they were each dealing with this issue in their own arts. Suprina was creating a ghostly and ghastly, ironic representation of the blind goddess of justice, Themis. Poet Gold was writing one of her poelodies addressing American racism and oppression, which ends questioning our individual and communal humanity. Poet Gold asks “What kind of humans are we inside?”

These Hudson Valley friends broadened their original collaboration of a processional performance to producing a video, “Say Their Names,” spanning 500-years of American racism that ends with a hopeful possibility for our future.

The screening is free, but you must RSVP. Afterwards, the audio will be available to download on Bandcamp or at http://www.poetgold.com and a portion of the proceeds will go towards bringing the Soundtrack of Life, an anti-gun violence program by the Sundog Theatre, to the Mid-Hudson Valley.

 Our conversation weaves through the subjects of hope, forgiveness, shame, justice, white privilege, and happiness. I hope you will consider supporting and shouting out their work!

Jayla Kai grew up in Woodstock, a town synonymous with the pureness of music. It evokes a togetherness where the community has each other’s back and the culture is almost symptomatic of its people (Dylan, Bowie, Van Morrison, Levon Helm). Kai cites a handful of local musicians who have served as key mentors to her. Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), is one of these key mentors who has inspired and encouraged her. Kai’s Debut EP, Epitome, is out now following the release of her crunching single Apple Tree and Kai’s introductory track, I Can’t Lie. As far as opening bows go, Epitome EP is as confident as you’ll hear. It’s the sound of an artist quickly in-tune with her writing and finding a distinct voice that is completely her own. The songs she shares here are sharp, literate, and expressive on an EP that zips and shuffles; all melody and poetry. Epitome is a bold statement of intent. Today’s guest is the profoundly talented Nina Isabelle. She is a process based artist working with perception, action, language, and phenomena. Her practice is a method to sort and solve the inconsistencies of language, memory, and form, and she makes paintings, drawings, photographs, video, sculpture, sound, performance and writing as inquiry into how sensory perception functions as the impetus for action, reaction, response, and choice making in art and life.

Her work has been presented at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City, The Queens Museum as part of Emergency Index Documentation Discussion, Judson Memorial Church, Grace Exhibition Space, and ABC No Rio in Exile at Bullet Space in NYC with Feminist Art Group, as well as at Para//el Performance Space and The Ear in Brooklyn, NY. Internationally her projects have been presented at Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Gimpo, South Korea, The Unstitute in Catalunya, Spain, Bangkok Underground Film Festival in Thailand, and NA Gallery in South Korea. Nationally her work has been shown at The San Diego Art Institute, The New School’s exhibition at The Bushwick Collective, Roman Susan in Chicago, IL, and CX Silver Gallery in Brattleboro VT, among others.

In 2018 she founded Three Phase Center for Collaborative Art Research & Building in Stone Ridge, NY where she facilitates, collaborates with, and documents the work of process based conceptual and performance artists. She’s continually motivated to work, present projects, facilitate, and collaborate with artists and idea people of any sort.

Today we talk about her upbringing be tossed in the air lots by acrobats and gymnasts and how her childhood set her up for being unmotivated by external validation or approval. This made for challenges in school, but seems to allowed for a vibrant life where she is guided by what is fun and fulfilling. We discuss some of the pursuits of her art in solving inconsistencies in language, memory and form, how perception is imperfect and malleable and several intersections between her work and thought processes and quantum physics. I try to keep up!

Kat Hunt is an artist and mystic who has been working in the the unseen realms for the past decade. She received her Akashic Records training and certifications from Christina Cross, longtime apprentice to Linda Howe. She is a founder of Moon Church, the feminist spiritual collective, and led women’s rejuvenation circles at Bushwick’s Otion Front Studio. Before shifting her focus to art and service, Kat worked as a strategist and consultant for big and small companies, including the United Nations, the New York Times, Facebook, Nike, and many more. Kat lives and works on bluestone mountain near Woodstock, New York, the traditional homelands of the Lenape.

Kat recently opened the Records of Fire during one of her Instagram Live offerings. It sparked a lot of internal inquiry for me that I wanted to dig a bit deeper and am grateful Kat was able to make the time to join me on today’s show, to talk about Fire and Desire ,and to re-open the records for further inquiry. Mary Haddad is an artist and student who took an idea she had about how to respond to the repeated destruction of a Black Lives Matter sign and turned that idea into a transformational, collaborative, creative experience for students of both the Oakwood Friends School, where the sign had been destroyed, and Spackenkill community which she’s a part of. The result of her efforts is a beautiful mural commemorating the lives of just a few who have been killed by police in the past several years.

Also joining in our conversation is student clerk of the Oakwood Friends School, Ann Pierre-Louis, who helped to get the Oakwood Friends School students involved and who joined in painting portions of the mural.

The mural is currently part of the I.D.E.A. Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in America Gallery show at Cornell Creative Arts Center in Kingston.

The I.D.E.A. art exhibition is a collaboration with New Horizons Resources (NHR), The Arc Mid-Hudson, and the Cornell Creative Arts Center. It was conceived to enable the diverse population of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities supported by NHR, and their staff to express their feelings about social injustice in our world and our community. This show highlights artwork that expresses thoughts, feelings and experiences in regard to racism, social injustices and oppression faced by people supported and employed through both NHR and The Arc Mid-Hudson. Their hope is that the work in this exhibit promotes a mutual understanding of how racism impacts our entire society and community, and provides opportunity for constructive dialogue and positive change. They aim to create an environment where people can feel safe and supported in their need to discuss these very important topics and their impact. The Exhibition is on display from May 1-July 31, 2021.

Mary’s mural will travel throughout the Hudson Valley, temporarily leaving the I.D.E.A. exhibit to be a part of a Juneteenth event at Mansion Square Park in Poughkeepsie, and then moving to the WomensWork.Art Gallery in August and the Art Effect Gallery in September.

Kayleigh Stack is an activist, artist, community steward, medicine womxn and a member of the neurodivergent community assuming the various roles of multidisciplinary performance artist, ethnographic researcher, oral historian and acupuncture clinician. Over the past ten years she has orchestrated spaces for people to share recorded audios of poignant histories and stories oriented around critical social and political narratives to be presented in an Oral History Performance Initiative: The Community Storytelling Composition Project.

Most of her work focuses on socio-political discourse, drawing upon performance as a subversive tool to generate conversation around a particular poignant or charged subject including; Disconnection, Involuntary Waste, Local Food Systems, Hydraulic Fracking, Gender politics and Systemic injustices.

She has degrees in Sociology from Hunter College, NY, Anthropology from SUNY New Paltz, NY, a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and a NYS, NCCAOM Licensed Acupuncturist. Kayleigh is a part of the incoming Masters of Oral History cohort at Columbia University, and she will begin her PhD studies in Humanities at Concordia University with the Fall 2022 class.

All of The CSCProject performance initiatives are less about putting on a “show” and more about generating a conversation. The hope is that this conversation does not end with the presentation alone, but translates into long-term institutional, economic, policy, and infrastructural change. In an attempt to make the performance more immersive, we find non-invasive, tactile ways to connect with the audience through various props.

Rosalie Frankel is originally from the Bronx, but has made a home in many fantastic places like Vieques, Puerto Rico and Manhattan, and now calls Kingston her home. She has been making Collage since Kindergarten, setting figures free and featuring them in new stories. The work is an attempted examination of undeniable confusion inherent in the dichotomy between mirth and melancholy. She is exploring the lively stew of relationships as well as emotions. Her art is the vehicle to expose both the glory and struggle of Eros.

Rosalie shares about when she first starting making art, how she’s finally learning to have faith in her work and process now that she’s a bit older, letting go enough so that it doesn’t stop her, not following the rules and how breathing helps her.
