275 “The Goddess Party”

Today is about The Goddess Party, a new project spearheaded from long time Hudson Valley musician Shana Falana in collaboration with Erica Quitzow and Sarah Perrotta. Featuring a choir of 30+ local singers, a rock band, and a willingness to interpret the likes of Kate Bush, Panda Bear, and PJ Harvey. “A cult worth joining.”

I am joined by Beth Carestia a member of the Choir like myself, and we hear from several of our co-creators by way of voice memo describing in some way what The Goddess Party means to them… magic, mystery, heart healing, collaboration, trust, creation, fun, true-self, singing, connection, the feminine, The Goddess…

We’re performing Friday at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:30pm and the movie Midsommer will follow our performance. You can get tickets ($12-$15) via Opus 40.

The Goddess Party band is Erica Quitzow, Sarah Perrotta, Betsy Wright, Sarah Carlson, Shana Falana, Lysa Opfer and Jenn Anderson.

Here’s a link to the Rosendale Ukulele Group that Beth and I gush about. Another mental health activity for us.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

206 Spirituality and Politics and Ending Polarization with Marielena Ferrer

It’s the return of our monthly conversation about Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer. Today we take inspiration from an episode of the Dan Harris Podcast 10% Happier about How You Help End Polarization and Inequality and Get Happier Too. It features Robert Putnam and Shaylan Romney Garrett who wrote the book, The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again. Without having read the book, we discuss different elements mentioned on the podcast about the “I, We, I” curve as well as the suggested factors that worked to facilitate change during times of great divide in American history. History doesn’t provide a perfect solution, but it can form the basis for inspiration to help facilitate more communication, collaboration and less division in our present day America. Are your “I” and “We” balanced? Who else is in for giving it a try?

Thanks to Ian Seda from Radio Kingston for engineering today’s show!

200 Annette Simmons and Areva Martin “Authors and Thought Leaders”

Today the show begins with a conversation with Annette Simmons, a keynote speaker, consultant, and author of four books, including The Story Factor, which is listed in The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. She received a business degree from Louisiana State University, went on to spend ten years in Australia in international business, then received an M.Ed. from North Carolina State University, before founded Group Process Consulting in 1996. Her latest book is titled, Drinking from a Different Well: How Women’s Stories Change What Power Means in Action. Learn more at her book’s website. Today Annette shares her thoughts on the different narrative men and women have around power, how women can come to trust their own instinct, how to resist gaslighting, how women can insist on their own narrative and stick to it, why moral emotions are so important and lots more. I read her book cover to cover in about 1 DAY, so I highly recommend!

In the second half of the show I get to speak with Areva Martin, an award-winning civil rights attorney, advocate, social issues commentator, talk show host, and producer. A CNN legal analyst and Harvard Law School graduate, Martin founded Martin & Martin, LLP, a Los Angeles-based civil rights firm, and is the CEO of Butterflly Health, Inc., a mental health technology company. A best-selling author, Martin has dedicated her fourth book, Awakening: Ladies, Leadership, and the Lies We’ve Been Told, to helping women worldwide recognize, own, and assert their limitless power. Today Areva shares some of her own personal story as it relates to gender inequality, what she’s learned by listening to the stories of other women, the lies that women have been told that have held them back, and how to beat a system that’s (still) rigged against women.

Here’s an astrology report for Friday/Saturday’s New Moon! And here’s a link to register for my Virtual New Moon Circle this Friday, Dec. 3rd at 8pm Eastern.

#197 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics – Compassion and Anger”

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer and our monthly conversation inspired by Espiritualidad y Politica, which ponders ideas related to society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace. We talk about the practical implications of this and other related topics. Today we discuss how politics has become a team sport, return to our conversation about compassion, and then dip into the point and purpose of anger and how it it seems to be more socially accepted, even revered, if displayed by a man vs. a woman.

Mariaelena is an artist and the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization.

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Radio Kingston.

#194 Sisterhood (and Politics) with Melinda McKnight, Lynne Bailey and Jana Martin

Today I am talking sisterhood and politics with three fabulous women, but first up, I share an interview I did, BC (before Covid), of Mikayla Haggerty, Marlea Catoosa, Ruby Friedman from the Golden Fleece 4H Sheep Club Dutchess County. I met them 2 years ago while attending the Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. I wanted hot apple cider and they were selling it, which made me curious about what they were doing there and why. Tune in to find out!

Then I share some of the astrological Full Moon report for this Wednesday, and play songs, Circles and Blue to Gold, off the new Sarah Perrotta release, “Blue to Gold.”

Then around minute 53 I have the honor of welcoming these three women running for local election in the Town of Hurley.

Jana Martin has been active in Ulster County community issues since making it her home in 2000. She’s a content director and editor for green and advanced technology firms, and an author published by The New York Times, Forbes, Simon & Schuster and Random House. She has taught writing at SUNY New Paltz and Word Café in Woodstock and Kingston. She was an active member of Eagle Valley Search Dogs K9 search and rescue team, is a runner and equestrian, and a proud stepmom to two boys. “Hurley’s Town Board needs support for the great work it’s already started — and to truly listen to the concerns of this community. I’d be proud to bring my skills and community spirit to the table.” Running for Hurley Town Board.

Melinda McKnight grew up in the Hamlet of Port Ewen and attended Kingston High School. Upon graduating, she earned an A.S. degree in Journalism from SUNY Ulster, a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Public History from SUNY Albany. She spent her early career in nonprofit administration where she managed all aspects of operations including, developing exhibits and special events, negotiating contracts, grant writing, budgeting and human resources.  She has served as Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Ulster, taught Continuing Education classes at Ulster BOCES and provided a 12-week character development program based on The Virtues Project at a medium security NYS Prison.  Since 2010, she has worked in the field of Building Performance in a variety of roles in a family-owned company that transitions homes and businesses off fossil fuels. Her current role is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. She currently serves as Vice President of Klyne Esopus Historical Society Museum, Board Member of Citizens for Local Power and Councilperson on the Town of Hurley Town Board. As a member of the Hurley Town Board, Melinda worked across party lines in writing and passing a Short Term Rental Law (Commended by the Ulster County Planning Board) and in creating a Zoning Task Force and a Climate Smart Task Force. She’s running for Hurley Town Supervisor.

Lynne Bailey grew up in a rural suburban area of Suffolk County and moved to NYC in 1976 starting her long and diverse professional career. In 2013 she purchased her home in Hurley and in recent years, Lynne has been very involved in community matters, volunteers for the Zoning Task Force and is the communications manager of the Hurley Climate Smart Task Force. Ms. Bailey has long cultivated service-oriented practices, and is eager for the opportunity to serve her community and its residents in the ways she knows best – using modern technology and methods, impeccable recordkeeping and communication skills, for the improvement of local government operations – with the respect and diligence that all residents merit.Service-oriented, accessible, trustworthy, technologically efficient, transparent and accountable. She’s running for Hurley Town Clerk/Tax Collector

They share about why they wanted to get involved in politics, how collaborating and reaching across the political aisle is important, how getting involved in local politics can be very positive and valuable for all of us, some of the challenges they have faced, and how their “sisterhood” has helped them through the difficult moments. So get out and VOTE! Early voting starts October 23rd here in Ulster County and election day is November 2nd!

P.S. here’s the Rosendale Uke Group I mentioned!

#170 Mary Haddad and Ann Pierre-Louis “All Black Lives Matter”

Mary Haddad is an artist and student who took an idea she had about how to respond to the repeated destruction of a Black Lives Matter sign and turned that idea into a transformational, collaborative, creative experience for students of both the Oakwood Friends School, where the sign had been destroyed, and Spackenkill community which she’s a part of. The result of her efforts is a beautiful mural commemorating the lives of just a few who have been killed by police in the past several years.

Also joining in our conversation is student clerk of the Oakwood Friends School, Ann Pierre-Louis, who helped to get the Oakwood Friends School students involved and who joined in painting portions of the mural.

The mural is currently part of the I.D.E.A. Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in America Gallery show at Cornell Creative Arts Center in Kingston.

The I.D.E.A. art exhibition is a collaboration with New Horizons Resources (NHR), The Arc Mid-Hudson, and the Cornell Creative Arts Center. It was conceived to enable the diverse population of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities supported by NHR, and their staff to express their feelings about social injustice in our world and our community. This show highlights artwork that expresses thoughts, feelings and experiences in regard to racism, social injustices and oppression faced by people supported and employed through both NHR and The Arc Mid-Hudson. Their hope is that the work in this exhibit promotes a mutual understanding of how racism impacts our entire society and community, and provides opportunity for constructive dialogue and positive change. They aim to create an environment where people can feel safe and supported in their need to discuss these very important topics and their impact. The Exhibition is on display from May 1-July 31, 2021.

You can view the virtual gallery online here.

Mary’s mural will travel throughout the Hudson Valley, temporarily leaving the I.D.E.A. exhibit to be a part of a Juneteenth event at Mansion Square Park in Poughkeepsie, and then moving to the WomensWork.Art Gallery in August and the Art Effect Gallery in September.

Additional students who participated in the mural are from Oakwoods Friends School: Kaylie Agresta, Brandon Christansen, Shakiba Daqiq, Molly Doherty, Brooklyn Dottin, Celeste Farangi, Bella Gedeon, Ryan Kraehar, lla Kumar (ee-luh), Ra Kumar, Aubrey Mahoney, Kishi Oyagi, Ally Ramos, Fio Sachs, Lulu Schloss, Ruby Schloss, Jareth Stokum, Jenine Tobias, Ibrahim Waheed (ee-bra-heem) and from Spackenkill Community: Mariam Baloch, Ria Bhutani, Amelia Chapin, Maya Chinkan, Emily Cohen, Andrew Chun, Kathryn Gagliardi, Ava Geer, Grace Haddad, Najib Haddad (nuh-jeeb), Yousef Haddad, Mya Hansen, Anikha Justin, Kathryn Kaylor, Isaac Kolisch, Emily Ma, Sophia Maslyn, Elizabeth Mastrantuono, Ofeibea Micah (oh-fey-bee-uh), Olivia Michail, Liam Moren, Udaya Rattan, Deshaun Smith, Abigail Straus, Anoushka Swain, Hannah Ullinger

After our conversation, I share a bit about open-mindedness, which perhaps is an important element to real change as it relates to both law enforcement and other elements of our world that could use an upgrade. Open-Mindedness on NPR. Here’s the Implicit Association Test mentioned in the NPR program.

#169 Kayleigh Stack “The Community Storytelling Composition Project”

Kayleigh Stack is an activist, artist, community steward, medicine womxn and a member of the neurodivergent community assuming the various roles of multidisciplinary performance artist, ethnographic researcher, oral historian and acupuncture clinician. Over the past ten years she has orchestrated spaces for people to share recorded audios of poignant histories and stories oriented around critical social and political narratives to be presented in an Oral History Performance Initiative: The Community Storytelling Composition Project.

https://www.thecommunitystorytellingcompositionproject.com.

Most of her work focuses on socio-political discourse, drawing upon performance as a subversive tool to generate conversation around a particular poignant or charged subject including; Disconnection, Involuntary Waste, Local Food Systems, Hydraulic Fracking, Gender politics and Systemic injustices.

She has degrees in Sociology from Hunter College, NY, Anthropology from SUNY New Paltz, NY, a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and a NYS, NCCAOM Licensed Acupuncturist. Kayleigh is a part of the incoming Masters of Oral History cohort at Columbia University, and she will begin her PhD studies in Humanities at Concordia University with the Fall 2022 class.

All of The CSCProject performance initiatives are less about putting on a “show” and more about generating a conversation. The hope is that this conversation does not end with the presentation alone, but translates into long-term institutional, economic, policy, and infrastructural change. In an attempt to make the performance more immersive, we find non-invasive, tactile ways to connect with the audience through various props.

Here’s a link to the online Zine that was discussed today as well!

And here’s the “No One Like You” interview with several of the other CSCP collaborators.

#107 “Circle Creative Collective” with Mary Jane Nusbaum, Mirabai Trent and Jenny Wonderling

Today I sit down with three of the members of Circle Creative Collective, an organization which hosts events, gathering in Circle to share and remember the things we learned or wish we had from our grandparents, a bridge from past to present and culture to culture, an open circle to all… bringing together the creative and curious across cultural borders in our Hudson Valley communities and beyond… inviting diverse individuals to share and preserve traditional crafts, arts, and skills… empowering people, inspiring connection to Earth and resilience.

Our conversation appropriately weaves through so many beautiful and important topics: the how and why they formed this vital Circle, their big Sankofa event happening this Saturday (2.15.20) at the Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church, 122 Clinton Avenue in Kingston, NY (in collaboration with MyKingstonKids.com), the traditions of Gullah Geechee women, returning to stillness and connecting with others through crafts and circles, who and what we value, collaboration vs. competition, culture of acceptance vs. culture of approval, lessons learned, ritual and self care.

Big THANKS to my guests:

MARY JANE NUSBAUM

Mary Jane is a natural teacher, mentor and inspiration. Grounded and deeply compassionate, gentle and dedicated, Mary Jane brings an artistic eye, a true passion for natural and artisanal processes, and many decades of experience as a teacher, gifted artist and craftsperson. Mj holds space with a rare calm, an open heart, and powerful communication skills. She helps to create an inclusive and curious class environment where her love for traditional knowledge, world cultures, the environment, and social justice are woven quietly into every stitch, and lesson. Mary Jane has lived in the Hudson Valley with her husband and two sons for the past 18 years. She has a Master’s in Printmaking from SUNY New Paltz and teaches art at New Paltz Middle School. Mj runs summer and year-round art programs with Wild Earth, a wilderness immersion program in High Falls. To Mary Jane, some of the most beautiful things about this world are the arts and cultures which have sprung from humanity’s relationship to nature in the particular places we each call “Home”.

MIRABAI TRENT

Raised in the Hudson Valley, Mirabai grew up with a deep connection to the Earth and plants that surrounded her. Majoring in fashion design, she fell in love with the realm of textiles and the unique qualities of each countries’ techniques, skills, and heritage. Mirabai, passionate about the healing power of the arts, did an intensive program at Esalen Institute learning about the patterns we have adopted, and how creative expression might shift those patterns. With a commitment to learning and preserving cultural crafts, she was led to explore Guatemala, where ancient arts and traditions are abundant. Setting off to dive deep into the ancient Maya practices, she cultivated relationships with various community leaders, who have the mission of preserving their ancient culture as well. She volunteered with a weaving association owned and run completely by local Tz’utujil Mayan women and endeavored to learn the complex traditions of weaving, natural dyeing, embroidery, and beadwork. In addition to Chrysalis, a program for teens to help engage her peers in open conversation and expression, she also started the traditional crafts department at HATCH Workshop, a center for emerging makers in Stockton CA.

JENNY WONDERLING

Jenny gathers and shares stories, and helps to enrich other people’s—and since 2005 she has done that through the vehicle of retail. A child of multi-cultural roots and a globally minded family, her wanderlust carried her to many places, deepening her caring for our planet and world community. Jenny feels that within each object is a trail of potent human interactions, and that we each have a responsibility to consider our impact every step of the way– from sourcing to how an item will impact the earth long after the impulse-buy has occurred. Nectar focused on sourcing and selling handmade, sustainable products, supporting Fair Trade programs, women’s cooperatives, and environmental initiatives. A new dream has blossomed though, quietly holding the seeds of her shops within the soil and blooms… There is a widespread longing to share authentically, something she felt she was only touching on by showcasing and selling goods. What if people could connect through making, creating, growing, and healing together? Jenny is excited to bring her love of design, experience with merchandising, marketing, event planning, and sales to Circle. Her passion for writing and story will bud through journal writing classes, and the gathering of stories for blogs and video on this site. Lastly, (but not at all least) her experience as a mother of three helps her understand the longing and importance to live and create in a thriving community—for the balance and health of the whole family… and world.

#96 “Sit & Spin and Physiologus” with artists, Sophi Kravitz + Jicky Schnee

Sort of speechless about the body of work that these women have created. Enjoy!

Sophi Kravitz is an artist and electronic engineer who’s always been fascinated with people, people she already knows and strangers alike. She believes that incorporating public art into a shared experience can be a strong conduit to the acceptance of the human next to you. She often collaborates as part of a larger collective as the construction of the work is highly technical, relying on the strength of both her background and love of bringing people together on collaborations. She believes in the simple magic of theatrical storytelling and works with classical sculpture, metal, code, and electronics to create beautiful playthings. Sophi shares her journey into making art and objects of play from her early childhood, to sculpture, electronic engineering, puppet making and most recently Hackaday, the company she now works for which serves up “Fresh Hacks Every Day” from around the Internet. Her previous collaborative art projects are inventive and impressive, and she shares how recently she’s begun making them meaningful in a deeper way by considering visitors’ reaction to current events to create deeper thoughts about the human experience. Check out her website for the elaborate and inspiring list of art she co-created.

Jicky Schnee is a mother, artist, actor and model, who despite the many different forms that it takes, is seeking to depict and understand authenticity and purity through her art. Jicky shares about her mother really helped to move her forward in life and career by pushing her to NYC and to connect with a key photographer boosting her modeling career. Jicky lost her mother when she was just 25 so we speak a bit about the uniqueness of the mother/daughter relationship and how she healed from the deep grief of losing her mother. Jicky’s interest in authenticity surfaces in many ways including our conversation about social media and the selfie phenomenon which seemingly places value on how people view us rather than how we value who and what we are. This aligns with Jicky’s new-ish appreciation of Crone Culture vs. Youth Culture, and she’s choosing to see and value the wisdom of those who’ve come before her over the priorities and actions of the youth which so often manifests in social media. We squeeze a lot into this hour including the physical and psychological challenges of acting, working with and admiring Joaquin Phoenix, studying psychology, raising daughters, and wanting to experience “the other side,” see her “Physiologus” work for reference.

There’s just not enough time in a two hour show I say! Hopefully these ladies will come back again. We have some unfinished conversation to be had.
