326 Kaitlyn Murray “la vie apres l’amour” A Sustainable Fashion Brand

Kaitlyn Murray has been care-taking her brand, la vie apres l’amour, a sustainable fashion organization since 2017. Born and raised in Red Hook, NY, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and went on to work at Hermes in customer service and merchandising. Her life long love affair with thrifting and her studies in sustainability led her to leave Hermes and open her own line of clothing and eventually a physical shop in the Rondout of Kingston which is many things including her studio, a retails space, an events space, and a community hang out where she’s hosted mending nights, community dinners, a vinyl dj event, artist talks, a clothing swap, a clay building workshop, and recently a floral arranging day.

In addition to tending to her store, she created Hudson Valley Sustainable Fashion Week in 2023. She hosted several events and produced and showed in the first ever HV Sustainable runway show on Rose Hill Farm in Red Hook. It was a collective show, showcasing 7 HV sustainable designers and 4 recent alumni from the Marist Fashion Program. It was a dream and the goal was to highlight designers doing this work in the area and make them known to the public.

Today Kaitlyn shares her journey into fashion and how it shifted over the years, making the leap into its current iteration. We learn about her brand, much of what her line consists of and her process. She educates us about the impact of the fashion industry on both the people charged with making it and the many ways the production of new clothes extracts from and damages our earth and even our own health. She has several upcoming events that she is hosting and otherwise supporting such as a clay handbuilding workshop, a community dinner, a film screening of Fashion Reimagined about doing fashion sustainably, and the big Hudson Valley Sustainable Fashion Week runway show in September.

We end with a little self care chat, and I left feeling inspired and hopeful!

247 Kevin Ann Jordan “Style Coach and Sustainable Style”

Kevin Ann Jordan@tailoredstylist has been helping women get dressed since age three, starting with her younger sister. Growing up in a remote mountain town in California, she didn’t have a lot of exposure to the fashion world but she loved the bi-annual school clothing shopping trips and reading fashion magazines. Kevin has always wanted to help people, and after a corporate career in the healthcare industry, she realized that she could help women on an individual level through styling. Starting at Stitch Fix, Kevin was trained as a virtual stylist and later started her own business, cultivating a roster of clients around the world from Sydney to New York to Vancouver.

Always practical, Kevin disliked the amount of waste created by the fashion industry, including the amount of low quality clothing piling up in women’s closets. With a mantra of quality over quantity, Kevin began to discover the sustainable fashion movement. Starting in her own closet, Kevin learned just how bad our clothing, and consumerist culture is for the planet, its people and animals.

Today, Kevin makes it her mission to help the planet one closet at a time through her one-on-one work with clients, as well as the Sustainable Style Club she launched in 2022. Kevin is spreading the message about buying less, recycling more, curating mindful, beautiful closets and wearing clothes that make us feel great, without compromising the planet.

She’s my guest this week and shares a million good ideas about how to think about what you’re wearing and how it impacts the environment starting with understanding your style manifesto, to buying less, re-imagining your clothes and how to recycle them. Her work is truly quite transformative, and I am excited to share this conversation with you.

Here are some of the resources and companies Kevin talked about on the show today: Good On You app and website Goodonyou.eco, ForDays – takeback bag, Marine Layer, Smartwool, Nisolo Everlane,Outerknown,Madewell, Eileen Fisher and Patagonia.

#98 “Artists and Activists” Helene Richman + Judith “Zelda” Miller

My first guest today is Helene Richman, a mom, wife, artist and creative force behind @brandhelene (Twitter, Facebook) who’s been working with a group of girl entrepreneurs, the Start Up Squad, at the Hodge Center in Kingston, NY. She’s been helping them learn about and build a business. I got to hang out with the girls a few weeks ago and talk about how to create their own radio show. After some prep and a little training, they all got to interview one another. I play some snippets of their interviews during today’s show as well as talk about what the girls have done in the program. After meeting with several entrepreneurs in the area the girls settled in on t-shirts for their business which they will debut at @madeinkingstonny this Thursday! Helene also shares about her corporate business experience and how she’s transferring that in to more service oriented roles. This year she organized the Hudson Valley Design Collective, (Facebook) focusing on upcycling used tectiles in an effort to help shift the waste in the clothing business. The Collective will also be at Made in Kingston along with Helene’s other endeavor with BlocArt, selling upcycled wood made by living wage workers in South Africa. No wonder this lady has another cold!

Next up is Zelda aka Judith Z. Miller @artistsoulspeaks an artist, actor, aspiring shaman and healer who’s talking about her work-in-progress solo show, Que Será, Será: A Life’s Journey of Sexual Orientation & Gender Expression. This multi-media show chronicles the joys and challenges of navigating non-binary Queerness from childhood in the 1950’s to adulthood. Zelda will be performing a work-in-progress production of the show on December 7 @ 8:30 pm & December 8 @ 3 pm at the @lgbtqcenter here in Kingston. Zelda shares about how she got into theater, some of the more powerful experiences she’s had like performing pieces in a women’s prison in Virginia, or a short piece that helped her heal her younger self who was forced to wear dresses against her wishes. Zelda is a gifted, open-hearted, magical and mystical being who has stories to share that are guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and most definitely think! If you can’t get to her live performance, Radio Kingston will be live streaming the Sunday show from their Facebook page which you can view any time ->->-> Check it out!!!

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.
