On today’s show I share my conversation with Therese Shechter, award-winning filmmaker and writer, and the founder of the feminist production company Trixie Films.  Her work fuses humor, activism, and personal storytelling to disrupt what’s considered most sacred about womanhood. She is a Canada Council for the Arts grantee for her documentary My So-Called Selfish Life which is having its World Premier this week at the Woodstock Film Festival. The film examines what it means to say no to motherhood in a society that assumes all women want children, and exposes what’s at stake when women are denied the right to control their own reproductive lives. It is the third part of a trilogy which includes her films “How To Lose Your Virginity” (2013) and “I Was A Teenage Feminist” (2005). These documentaries have screened from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul to Seoul, and her work is in the collections of over 300 universities, non-profits, and libraries. I had the opportunity of a sneak peak at her film and it’s fascinating, thought provoking, informative and entertaining… and this is coming from someone who has struggled to have children yet is STILL trying!

Today’s guest is the profoundly talented Nina Isabelle. She is a process based artist working with perception, action, language, and phenomena. Her practice is a method to sort and solve the inconsistencies of language, memory, and form, and she makes paintings, drawings, photographs, video, sculpture, sound, performance and writing as inquiry into how sensory perception functions as the impetus for action, reaction, response, and choice making in art and life.

Her work has been presented at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City, The Queens Museum as part of Emergency Index Documentation Discussion, Judson Memorial Church, Grace Exhibition Space, and ABC No Rio in Exile at Bullet Space in NYC with Feminist Art Group, as well as at Para//el Performance Space and The Ear in Brooklyn, NY. Internationally her projects have been presented at Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Gimpo, South Korea, The Unstitute in Catalunya, Spain, Bangkok Underground Film Festival in Thailand, and NA Gallery in South Korea. Nationally her work has been shown at The San Diego Art Institute, The New School’s exhibition at The Bushwick Collective, Roman Susan in Chicago, IL, and CX Silver Gallery in Brattleboro VT, among others.

In 2018 she founded Three Phase Center for Collaborative Art Research & Building in Stone Ridge, NY where she facilitates, collaborates with, and documents the work of process based conceptual and performance artists. She’s continually motivated to work, present projects, facilitate, and collaborate with artists and idea people of any sort.

Today we talk about her upbringing be tossed in the air lots by acrobats and gymnasts and how her childhood set her up for being unmotivated by external validation or approval. This made for challenges in school, but seems to allowed for a vibrant life where she is guided by what is fun and fulfilling. We discuss some of the pursuits of her art in solving inconsistencies in language, memory and form, how perception is imperfect and malleable and several intersections between her work and thought processes and quantum physics. I try to keep up!

Silvia Federici is an Italian and American scholar, teacher, and activist from the radical autonomist feminist Marxist and anarchist tradition. She is a professor emerita and Teaching Fellow at Hofstra University, where she was a social science professor, and she has also worked as a teacher in Nigeria. She was co-founder of the International Feminist Collective, and an organizer with the wages for housework campaign. In 1973, she helped start Wages for Housework groups in the US. In 1975 she published Wages Against Housework, the book most commonly associated with the wages for housework movement. Silvia also co-founded the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa (CAFA), and was involved with the Midnight Notes Collective. In 1995, she co-founded the Radical Philosophy Association (RPA) anti-death penalty project. She is the author of several important texts including Caliban and the Witch, which we read and discussed during this past month of March. I am truly grateful for her generosity in time to be here with us on today’s show.

Following our reading of Caliban and the Witch, Rakel and I are honored to be able to continue the conversation with the one and only Silvia Federici. She shares generously her thoughts on why this book is still relevant today — because the events are still happening around the globe — and where the movement needs to go — grassroots organization and cooperation of activist groups to force the change to happen. There’s so much richness and value in this conversation. Let us know what you think!

IONE, is a dedicated educator, psycho-spiritual therapist and pastoral counselor who specializes in dreams and the creative process. She conducts seminars and retreats throughout the world. She is the Founding Director and Prime Mother of the Ministry of Maåt, Inc. (MoM, Inc.), a spiritual organization specializing in women and community with goals of world harmony and balance. She is a graduate of the Helix Training Program and a Certified Qi Healer. IONE is a noted author, playwright/director and poet and the former Artistic Director of Deep Listening Institute, Ltd.  Both DLI and MoM act to foster harmonious world community.
 
Lisa Barnard Kelley is a vocalist, performance artist, actor, priestess of Maåt and student of Tao. Lisa has performed music and performance art in the Hudson Valley for the last ten years, collaborating with local musicians, actors, puppeteers and visual artists. She has honed her skills over the years in acting, movement, stage direction/design, puppetry, jazz/free improvisation and sound production which she experiments with in original performances including elements of spoken word, vocalization, masks, music and movement. She dedicates her craft to exploring the open field of vocal expression from within and through the guidance of her mentors. She is a Deep Listening Certificate Holder and the Director of Perla Productions. She received her B.A. in Performance Studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Rakel Stammer is an artist and teacher who primarily works in painting and drawing, but also dabbles in sound, installation, collage, writing, photography, printmaking and performance. Her work has been published in several magazines, anthologies and journals across the world and she has exhibited in Denmark, Sweden and the U.S. She was on the show before, pre-COVID in October 2019, talking about her series “The C%#& (C-word) Drawings” completed during a residency at Deer Creek Collective. Rakel speaks publicly and writes about capitalism, art, trauma, dominance and violence, seen through an anti-capitalist, intersectional feminist lens!

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist (The New Yorker magazine) and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be her gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. She is also a writer, has appeared on HBO and NPR, performed in various esteemed settings, is an alumnus of the O+ Festival, and most recently added teaching via SUNY New Paltz to her list of accomplishments.

Happy Women’s History Month! In collaboration with Women’s History Month Kingston, we continue the discussion of Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch. This week we’re discussing Chapter 3, “The Great Caliban:The Struggle Against the Rebel Body.” In Silvia Federici’s words, “[o]ne of the preconditions for capitalist development was the process that Michel Foucault defined as the ‘disciplining of the body,’ which in my view consisted of an attempt by state and church to transform the individual’s power into labor-power. This chapter examines how this process was conceived and mediated in the philosophical debates of the time, and the strategic interventions which it generated.” Lots of juicy stuff in this one folks! Malebo Sephodi is a South African writer and researcher. With over 6 years corporate and just over 20 years community development experience, Malebo has worked and spoken in various parts of Africa, Europe and the Americas. She has worked with many Schools, NGO’s and the private sector tackling numerous socio-economic projects.

She has been listed by Okay Africa as top 100 women in Africa in 2018 and a Mail and Guardian Top 200 Young People in 2018. She was the recipient of the Fabulous Woman Brave Award in 2018 and a runner up in the Gauteng Legislature Vita Basadi Award. Malebo was also the recipient of the South African Literary Award first-time Published Author in 2018 and is a Wits City Institute Mellon Fellow and recipient of the Wits University Walter and Albertina Sisulu Prize. Her research interests include: Gender, Human Development Economy, Artificial Intelligence Policy, and the Hegemony of Science.

Her debut non-fiction titled Miss Behave published by BlackBird Books (imprint of Jacana Media) was released in May 2017. Dubbed by many readers as “compulsory reading,” Miss Behave tracks Malebo’s journey as a Black Woman in South Africa fighting for autonomy over her life. She addresses issues such as Patriarchy, Sexism, Intersectionality, Body positivity and Economic Quotas. Miss Behave has been long listed for the Sunday Times Alan Paton Non Fiction Prize.

Malebo shares how growing up in a family of activists was the start of her being seen as a pillar in her community and how the pressure to remain that pillar took a toll on her body which eventually led to an awakening of sorts (my language) with respect to self care. She shares how she learned to rest, find pleasure, joy and prioritize self care. Malebo also talks about the role spirituality plays in her personal care as well as her life in general, and how honoring her spirituality is decolonial work. “Science is knowledge, but who defines what that knowledge is.” Malebo has also done a lot of work to end gender based violence, and she shares some of her lessons learned along the way. Rosalie Frankel is originally from the Bronx, but has made a home in many fantastic places like Vieques, Puerto Rico and Manhattan, and now calls Kingston her home. She has been making Collage since Kindergarten, setting figures free and featuring them in new stories. The work is an attempted examination of undeniable confusion inherent in the dichotomy between mirth and melancholy. She is exploring the lively stew of relationships as well as emotions. Her art is the vehicle to expose both the glory and struggle of Eros.

Rosalie shares about when she first starting making art, how she’s finally learning to have faith in her work and process now that she’s a bit older, letting go enough so that it doesn’t stop her, not following the rules and how breathing helps her.

I also played a portion of an interview I participated in with Keiko Sono and Brett Barry, Podcasters Talk Podcasts. Check out Keiko’s Intrinsic Podcast all about what makes life worth living. It’s about the innate value of each individual and the fundamental motivation that drives us. What if we could align this value and motivation with our jobs? What if we could support ourselves and our families doing what we are good at and enjoy doing? How would that affect our society? What would such a society look like? Belinda Farrell is a Certified Master Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner, Huna Practitioner, and Reconnective Healing Practitioner. She’s had an exceptionally adventurous life, teaching third grade for five years in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles, playing the character Snow White at Disneyland, as a TV News Reporter for KABC Channel 7 in Hollywood, working on the staff of Senator Charles H. Percy (Illinois) in Washington, D.C., firewalked 18 times with Tony Robbins, swam with dolphins, was a film and stage actress and a professional Precision Stunt Car Driver for TV Commercials and films. She healed herself from a significant incapacitating spinal injury and is the author of several books including Find Your Friggin Joy.

I recorded this interview early in the year, pre-COVID. As the world seemed to change because of the pandemic, I put it on the shelf for a more appropriate time. As the year was coming to a close, I listened back to my conversation with Belinda which felt like a much needed healing session and the perfect way to end the year. Belinda shares her adventurous life story and the wisdom she learned along the way including the power of forgiveness, believing in your ability to heal, overcoming fear, releasing the programming in the unconscious mind, cutting cords, Huna and working through the grief of losing her son to a drug overdose. The challenges of the pandemic won’t end magically come January 1st, but I hope that we’ve learned ways to move through the challenges with the support of and by supporting others, to bring greater ease to all. Lydia Willoughby, Founder & General Manager of Sassafras Mercantile comes from a family of pine tree farmers and geologists in South Carolina. As shopkeep and general manager Lydia (she) has always been drawn to plant life and soil. With her Moon in the 12th House, and Sun in the 8th House, Lydia’s work revolves around exchange and nurturance in integrating the unknown and the mysterious into accessible platforms for transformation and resolution built on systems of care. Lydia offers tarot readings from a queer, trauma-informed perspective that engages the cycle of life, death, and rebirth through the collective human experience. She studied herbalism with Dina Falconi, and studied tarot in person with Lindsay Mack and Audrey Gilbert. Lydia completed a permaculture design certification course with Sowing Solutions in Shelburne Falls, MA. 

Sassafras Mercantile was founded with an interest in connecting community knowledge to personal liberation, and convening a beautiful, inclusive, queer, feminist, anti-racist space that asks questions with curiosity and answers with a full heart and a little bit of magic in the City of Kingston, NY.

Today we chatted about Lydia’s background and relationship to land and trees, how she got into the work she does today which is very multifaceted but also naturally connected and aligned. She shares a new project at Sassafras, the monthly wellness subscription box, how Tarot fits into her life and how she offers it to others, and a whole lot more.
