234 “Childfree by Choice” with Therese Shechter and LeNora Faye

It’s the return of Therese Shechter, Founder of Trixie Films, Author, Speaker and Director of the compelling documentary film, My So-Called Selfish Life, and she’s brought with her LeNora Faye, a childfree lifestyle advocate, speaker, and moderator who creates global platforms, both public and private, for people who are choosing not to have, birth, or raise children. She is a co-host of the international podcast and web series, Childfree Girls and a co-founder of Childfree Convention, where she serves as PR manager and co-moderator. 

The Childfree Convention is a free, two-day virtual event to connect childfree people all over the world, where childfree people and their allies can expand their knowledge about the childfree lifestyle and explore important topics in the childfree community.

The convention is FREE to watch and open to all who want to be part of the childfree conversation.

The panels will explore topics of interest to the childfree community such as the childfree experience in different world cultures, Pronatalism, Antinatalism, Defining Family, Childfree Guys, Childfree LGBTQ+, Sterilization, Childfree F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence Retire Early), Childfree 60+, and more.

The Childfree Convention is happening July 30-31 and August 1st is International Child Free Day so we’re celebrating with them and sharing their good work with you. Whether you identify as Child Free, Child Less or none of the above, this is an important conversation in changing the narrative on womanhood and disempowering the patriarchy.

231 The Freedom Show – Life and Liberty of the Constitution

It’s the 4th of July which means it’s my old roomie and pal Mary’s Birthday. Now that’s worth celebrating!!!

Today I teach Con Law 101. Okay, not really, but I wanted to deepen my understanding of the 14th Amendment which I haven’t thought about in detail since law school. While the language, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws,” seems straight forward to me as it relates to body autonomy, the Supreme Court has battled over the concept of liberty and the right to privacy for decades. I wanted to understand why. I enter the rabbit hole to the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbs and end with my unfortunate and cynical conclusion that the court interprets the laws the way it wants to. 

Admittedly, it’s not an easy task wrangling the different thoughts and opinions from over the years, but truthfully I don’t know why we are turning to precedent that existed when women had no official rights under the constitution. That being said, there is plenty of common law to show that abortion was not criminalized prior to the quickening stage, and that often abortion was criminalized to protect the life of the mother because abortion practices were quite dangerous. I also don’t understand why the issue at hand isn’t a women’s right to body autonomy and to make personal and private health decisions. I can only conclude it’s because if that was the “right” that was to be reviewed and balanced against a State’s interest, the Court would be hard pressed to come to the same decision. There was zero consideration, review, analysis or balancing of a woman’s interest in her health as it relates to the often life threatening and nearly always life changing state of being pregnant. We’ve officially returned to the dark ages.

205 Nancy Graham and Louisa Finn “Love and Mohonk Consultations”

Nancy Graham serves on the board of Mohonk Consultations and the arts council of The Lace Mill, where they live in Midtown Kingston. They have worked or volunteered for numerous nonprofits related to social justice, alternative media, theatre, film, and writing. Poet/writer/visual artist under the name Nancy O. Graham; actor under the name Noa Graham. Her most recent theatre project was Orchid Receipt Service, starring Asia Kate Dillon, at Theater MITU580 in Brooklyn, pre-pandemic. Most recent film project is a short called Elegy for a Glacier, about an environmental activist and her glaciologist daughter forced to face off about the construction of a ski resort in the Rockies.

Louisa Finn is a  Hudson Valley native, whose mother was a member of the Quaker Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House, and father a Russian Jewish pianist from the Bronx.  She has spent her life thus far actively engaged in learning what it is to be human and to be herself.  She works as a Speech/Language Pathologist and Reading Tutor, and clinical instructor at SUNY New Paltz.  She is on the Board of Mohonk Consultations, where she serves as Administrative Coordinator, and Sky Lake Shambhala Center Buddhist Retreat.  She writes poetry, and is creating a forest garden in her front yard.

Today we’re talking about Love and a myriad of related and thought provoking subjects. Nancy and Louisa share about their first memories of love and how they relate to the word which takes us into the realm of spiritual materialism, caring for others, and being a mother.  The show is inspired by bell hooks and her writings on love and self love/self worth so we dive into self-love as Louisa and Nancy share their own process to love themselves better as well as how self-love relates to caring for others and being a woman. We then leave the personal towards the end of the show to talk about the public and how the work of Mohonk Consultations is cultivating love in its own way, bringing folks together to collaborate, lifting voices, and caring for land and others. We leave you with a call for your own definition or thoughts on Love.  bell hooks herself seemed to have a few, “love is the action we take on behalf of our own or another’s spiritual growth…” “love is a combination of trust, commitment, care, respect, knowledge and responsibility…” So, what say you?

#179 “Free Your Mind” with Theresa

Following up on my first annual “freedom” themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on “Narrative Bias” (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and “The Backfire Effect” (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to “The No True Scotsman Fallacy” (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and “The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight” (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about “self delusion” from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. So, if you too want to free your mind and be truly independent, then this is the show for you!

Rakel speaks publicly and writes about capitalism, art, trauma, dominance and violence, seen through an anti-capitalist, intersectional feminist lens!

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist (The New Yorker magazine) and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be her gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. She is also a writer, has appeared on HBO and NPR, performed in various esteemed settings, is an alumnus of the O+ Festival, and most recently added teaching via SUNY New Paltz to her list of accomplishments.

#126 “Freedom, Love, Joy and Peace” with Theresa

Today it’s just me, Theresa, talking about freedom and independence with a little help from some musicians and the book, You Are Now Less Dumb by David McRaney. Why this show? Why this format? The 4th of July stirs up lots of thoughts and feelings for me so I seek to find some answers or get clearer on the narratives that drive these thoughts and feelings. We’ll dive into the Declaration of Independence, some history, a cursory overview of narrative bias and the backfire effect which is basically a biased narrative problem, and how these biases may affect how we view our history and the current events unfolding in our world today. Oh our poor, little, infallible brains!

Today, we’re talking Black Lives Matter, multicultural community and UNITY!

Joining me in the first hour is Jessieca McNabb, comedian, co-host of Harambee Radio,No One Like You and oft guest on My Kingston Kids on Radio Kingston… and an active member of the Harambee Coalition, a mid-Hudson valley coalition that supports and promotes the strength of our community through cultural and educational events that enriches the lives of youth and adults. You can also catch Jessieca’s last appearance on “i want what SHE has” Episode #106, from February 5, 2020.

Joining Jessieca is Monique Tinsley, Jessieca’s “day 1,” who is also a vital member of the Harambee Coalition, working with Jessieca on initiatives to protect and restore the African Burial Ground on Pine Street and the upcoming online Juneteenth Celebration taking place online this Saturday from 1-4pm.

The Juneteenth holiday is considered the “longest running African-American holiday”[22] and has been called “America’s second Independence Day”. This Saturday’s Celebration will take place live on Harambee’s Facebook page to celebrate and remember the African-American Independence from slavery in America. This online festival will entertain, encourage and educate guests on parts of the African-American experience. This is a family friendly event which will include song, dance, spoken word, history, talk and more from various participants at locations throughout Kingston. This event is in loving Memory of Pastor Paul Worthington.

Jessieca and Monique speak with me about the Black Lives Matter protests, Juneteenth, the African Burial Ground and the importance of self care. Words they shared that I want to amplify are the need for white people to really pause regularly and soak up the reality of the black experience in the past few hundred years so that we don’t stop the pressure until there’s real equality and appreciation for black lives.

In the second half of the show I am joined by Sarah Litvin, PhD., Director of the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History to talk about the Multicultural Festival that is happening online now. The online festival website is the host to rich content from our diverse history and community; performances, cooking instructional videos, greetings in various languages, a list of our diverse restaurant scene and a community quilt.

Joining Sarah are three members from the band, Caprice Rouge, Laura Crimmins, Karen Levine, and Elena Erber, who are participating performers in this year’s online festival.

Caprice Rouge is an acoustic ensemble from the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State playing Balkan, Roma-Gypsy and Klezmer dance tunes! Performing on traditional instruments including accordion, violin, bouzouki, gypsy jazz guitar, clarinet, and percussion, the band is happy to play for dancers, revelers, and listeners at taverns and cafes, festivals and farmers’ markets, at weddings and other celebrations!

Stay tuned for live performances by the band once we’re safe for social distancing, and in the meantime, join in the online festival which will continue to have more content added to it in the coming weeks!
