298 Growing Women’s Wealth with Beth Bengtson

Today I welcome Beth Bengtson from Working for Women back to the show. She catches us up on what they’ve been up to in supporting their mission to invest capital (dollars and skills) from businesses into nonprofits supporting women who want to enter and stay in the workforce to become financially independent. They are co-hosting a screening of the film $AVVY.  The film dives deep into the complexities surrounding women and money, uncovering the hidden narratives that have influenced our perceptions for generations. Directed by visionary filmmaker Robin Hauser, “$AVVY” is a captivating journey through time, culture, and society, examining the intricate relationship between women and money. From historical accounts that have shaped financial narratives to the unspoken rules that govern our modern world, this film unearths it all.

Related to their upcoming film screening we spend some time talking about the hurdles in moving more wealth to women and why getting it into the hands of women is vital to an equitable and thriving local and global community. The screening is taking place from 5:15pm – 7:15pm* November 15th at Upstate Films, Starr Theater, 6415 Montgomery St, Rhinebeck, NY. *Film screening includes Q& A after Beth Bengtson of Working for Women and Beth Jones of Third Eye Associates, Ltd.

I fill up the remainder of the show talking about the energy of money and how and why to consider working with it in a spiritual way, channeling your inner mystic and calling upon your ancestors to help change your money story and your relationship to it.

Here are the articles I shared and the playlist referenced to get you in the mood for Samhain and a little money magic.

#189 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moon-Day of the month and the return of Marielena Ferrer! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and we’re using that book to seed conversations relating to spirituality and politics. Marielena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is also an artist and will be participating in this weekend’s Art Walk Kingston at The D.R.A.W. as well as the O+ Festival, Oct. 8-10.

As a reminder or for those just tuning into these conversations, the book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we talk about power, money, privilege, and influence via the topics addressed in the New Yorker article, “Life After White Collar Crime,” which excellently address the addictive nature of money and influence, how and why white collar crime has been policed (or not), and the overall lack of ethical and moral boundaries in business and finance circles. What happened to valuing ethics?!?!? Let us know what you think. We’ll certainly be returning to these themes as we move through more of the subjects covered in Espiritualidad y Politica.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston.

#167 Marielena Ferrer “Espiritualidad y Politica”

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer-Harrington! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and she feels it’s time to start revisiting these subjects from today’s lens. Mariaelena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is an artist and the artist behind Radio Kingston has begun its Muchas Flores (Un Jardin, Many Flowers, One Garden) Campaign to welcome in the warm season. Check it out over People’s Place. You can listen to her previous interview from September of 2020 where we speak more about her life and her work. Today, and every second Moonday of the month, she’ll be joining me to discuss various topics related to this important book.

The book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Spirituality and politics will set the tone for our monthly conversations as we meander through topics related to power, money, purpose, sustainability, compassion, community, participation in politics, service, ethics, the tarot and wherever else we are guided. We’d love for you to join in this conversation as it’s meant to support all of us through a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.

#104 Joanne Leffeld, the Moolah Doula on “Healing Our Relationship with Money”

Welcome to Season 3!!!

Today, my guest is Joanne Leffeld, more famously known as the “Moolah Doula.” She’s worn many roles in her life including certified financial planner, mom, yoga teacher, artist, hospice volunteer, business partner in a lighting design company and more recently an end of life doula. She’s had her share of ups and downs but believes there’s always an opportunity to birth a new life, and she helps people do that through the lens of understanding their relationship to money. She can relate to the full range of emotions the discussion of money provokes and helps people overcome their fear of birthing their new financial life. And that’s why she’s the @moolahdoula

Today, we got into A LOT! The importance of your first memory of money, learning what you value, learning how to value yourself, navigating the money talk with a partner, the importance of communication, honesty, how to work with your inner child, the fear of not having enough money, yoga and listening to your inner wisdom. Joanne’s work feels like a gift to me, both on a personal level, but also in how it is the seed of potential in healing the problems that money causes in our world. Thank you for your work Joanne!

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/
