S. 1 E. 2 Dancing with Water with Dr. Catherine Svehla

Today on the show we are in conversation with Catherine Svehla, PhD, an independent scholar, storyteller, and mentor in the mythic life. She works with artists on their projects and process, and guides people through work/life transitions by connecting them with their inner wisdom. She is the creator of the Myth Matters podcast (part of the Joseph Campbell Foundation’s MythMaker℠ Podcast Network) and also shares the transformative power of myths and fairytales through story-based workshops and events. Catherine holds a PhD in mythology and depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and has been working the liminal fields of myth, creativity, and consciousness for 30 years. Today we explore “the feminine” archetype beginning with Dr. Svehla’s understanding of Jung’s “feminine” and why she advises finding different methods of achieving our shared goal of shifting the power dynamic of the patriarchy. We learn about the philosophy of post Jungian Feminists who offer better working models for us and why Catherine believes it’s important to avoid the Essentialist perspective of fixed gender qualities. So how does gender play a role in all of this? Let us know your thoughts in this ongoing collaborative conversation.

Dr. Svehla will be in the Hudson Valley next week as a part of Kelli Scar’s Lesser Mysteries happenings.  She will be holding a talk about “The Problem of the Return” on April 29th, 2026 at the Art Society of Kingston.

Here’s our previous conversation with Dr. Svehla from September 2025.

393 Dr. Catherine Svehla “Myth Matters and Inanna’s Descent”

Happy Autumnal Equinox! Today on the show, Jennifer Mulak and I share our conversation with Dr. Catherine Svehla @drcsvehla a storytelling scholar and consultant in the field of mythology/depth psychology, artist, creativity coach, outdoorswoman, lover of the Mysteries, mentor in the mythic life and host of the Myth Matters Podcast. She helps people reframe their questions or their story, and explore the connection between being true to oneself and spiritual growth. She believes there’s an inner knowing, a source of direction and truth in your psyche that’s waiting for you to rediscover it. Dr. Svehla will be at the Arts Society of Kingston this Thursday, September 25th from 7-9pm for a workshop supporting folks to go deeper into the myth of the Transformation and the Myth of Inanna Workshop where folks will be invited to “EXPLORE THE ROLE OF TRANSFORMATION IN YOUR LIFE THROUGH A GUIDED JOURNEY INTO THE ANCIENT MYTH OF THE GODDESS INANNA AND SEED YOUR PSYCHE FOR DEEPER ENGAGEMENT WITH THE GREATER MYSTERIES RITUAL-PERFORMANCE AT WIDOW JANE MINE.” Previous knowledge of the myth is not required.

During our conversation, Dr. Svehla takes us through her own journey from confusion to creativity and how myth and consciousness helped to shape her own clarity and the way in which she now supports others. Her dissertation on the archetypal exploration of The Law of Attraction in American self-help culture folds into our conversation as we unravel some of the myth of unlimited human potential. Two hours was not nearly enough time to explore these rich topics that she surfaces for herself and others in her work. We’re still in deep contemplation…

Jennifer and I close the show with some sharing on the Equinox and the transition into and through this new season.

271 Heather Duke “Center for Symbolic Studies” and Daphne Fiori-Wood “St. Baldrick’s”

Today I enjoyed speaking with Heather Duke – who is one of the sparkly beings and co-creators over at the Center for Symbolic Studies. A non-profit with a mission to inspire nature-based spirituality, leading to personal growth and communal awareness. Founded by Drs. Robin and Stephen Larsen, inspired by the works of friend and mentor Joseph Campbell- The Center for Symbolic Studies has been offering a window into the Mythic Imagination for over 30 years through seasonal festivals, Dream Workshops, sacred teaching by Shamans from around the world, lectures, and celebrations of art and dance surrounded and inspired by nature.

Register for their Beltane Festival on May 20th, rain date, May 21st.

Heather talks about her own work in neurofeedback, dreams, Beltane and the Center’s other happenings, Vanaver Caravan, Wild Arts, nature and community. You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Later in the show I share my conversation with Daphne Fiori-Wood who is shaving her hair on April 29th to raise money for childhood cancer research with St. Baldrick’s. Research is hope for kids with cancer, but donations to find cures have been down since 2020. She will also be donating her hair to Wigs forKids!, wigsforkids.org, at the end of the event. Your gift will give kids hope, supporting the best research across the country, through the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants. Cancer kills more of our kids than any other disease. Can you help? Thank you!

Here’s the link to Earthday tips to living more sustainably, and here’s the show with Kevin Ann Jordan talking about sustainable style.
