This month on Spirituality and Politics, Marielena and I are joined by Isis Benitez, Lead Director of Communications, Advocacy and Outreach at the YWCA Ulster County. Isis shares the details behind the “Until Justice Just Is” campaign that is underway this week in Kingston and Poughkeepsie featuring film screenings and rallies with speakers all intended to help folks understand the impacts of racism and what we can do to put an end to it. Not only is this campaign creating a safe space for people to talk about racism and its painful effects, but it is also a place to learn more about what you can do to help combat it. Isis is also interested in understanding where the community is as it relates to racism and how we can work together to ends its insidious nature. Today, Marielena steers the ship and is joined by artist and art historian/historian Mya Bailey for this month’s installment of Politics and Spirituality. Theresa and baby Aiden do make a guest appearance. Today’s conversation approaches reproductive freedom from the perspective of justice and equity and where it’s lacking in the health care system. Mya has focused much of her art on the idea of race and how it’s both impacted her internally as well as externally. Marielena brings themes from this recent NY Time’s Article to the conversation, and we learn about Mya’s artwork placement in the Yale University’s Art and Art History journal @asteriskjournal.

As an/aesthetics suggests, we sought projects that reimagine collective assumptions about the aesthetically acceptable. For example, how might new paradigms emerge with mutuality and reciprocity, inclusivity, regeneration, imperfection, entanglement, slowness and authenticity? Can we create space for bodily intelligence, the imperceptible, irregularity, playfulness and nonsense?

Tracy Givens Hunter is Director of the Navigator Program at Public Policy and Education Fund of New York. She is an active practitioner of Restorative Justice Practices and Circle Keeping with Dutchess County Mediation Center and Westchester Restorative Justice Center. Tracy has over 20 years experience as an Activist and organizer regarding Racial Justice, Women Rights, Criminal justice, People’s Institute Survival and Beyond and Human Rights with organizations such as the NAACP, ACLU, BLM, and ENJAN. Tracy has given Presentations, Mediated and provided Trainings to private organizations and school districts and on January 30th, she is moderating “Council of the Elders” an event sponsored by Hold the Line taking place on Saturday, January 30th from 2-4pm. Joining me today are Kathy Sellitti, Assistant Principal at Kingston High School and Charlotte Adamis, School Librarian, J. Watson Bailey Middle School in Kingston, two of the several organizers of “Kingston Reads About Racism” talking about the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Today they share how this started in their schools with their colleagues and how they’ve seen some pretty significant transformation amongst themselves and their peers. We dig into some of the subjects of the book like white privilege and police brutality and what we’ve all learned about our privilege from reading this book and expanding our awareness of the experiences of black and brown people. They share resources that have been helpful to them including the work of Bettina Love, author of We Want To Do More Than Survive, Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.

I am grateful to these women for bringing this conversation to our community and being willing to share personally on the show today. I look forward to joining in with the continuing community conversations to follow.

Onnesha Roychoudhuri is a writer, speaker, and educator with over 15 years of experience working at the intersection of storytelling and social justice.

She is the author of The Marginalized Majority: Claiming Our Power in a Post-Truth America, named one of the best books of 2018 by Kirkus Reviews. (NOTE: you can buy it at RoughDraft in Kingston.)

Onnesha regularly leads writing and storytelling workshops for organizations across the country, including the Moth and the Reproduction Health Access Project, as well as at universities such as San Francisco State University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, Pratt Institute, and Western ConnecticutState University, where she is an instructor in the graduate writing program.

Part of this work involves trainings to advocates working on the frontlines of the fight for social justice and equity.

A 2013 fellow at the Center for Fiction, Onnesha’s writing has appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone, Kenyon Review, n+1, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Boston Review, McSweeney’s, The Rumpus, The Nation, The American Prospect, Salon, and Mother Jones. She is a 2011 and 2012 Pushcart Prize nominee, and has been awarded residencies at Hedgebrook and Blue Mountain Center.

Today we had some fun and deep moments discussing topics like journalism, her book, white male objectivity, #metoo, protests, Black Lives Matter, truth, social justice story telling and self care. One of my favorite quotes from her book, “To believe that non-violent protest is unnecessary, pointless, over the top or reflective of an unreasonable impatience presupposes that your day to day existence is tolerable and acceptable.” Truth!
