#134 Jaguar Mary X “Midnight Medicine Journey”

Today’s guest is none other than Jaguar Mary X host of Midnight Medicine Journey, a show that was birthed as a mash-up of recitations and discussions about science-fiction books by people of color, interviews with local and global artists, plant healers, spiritual visionaries, and medicine people with featured music from around the world. It continues to evolve as JMX expands and expounds about afro-futures, plant medicine, ancestors and spirit-infused ritual practice with an emphasis on queerness and mysticism. JMX identifies as a performance artist, a medicine woman working primarily with the plant mugwort, an elder, a fairy being, a hooper, a buddhist, all gender or non-gender, and down for discussing the movement away from the punitive justice system. Today we get to learn a little about JMX’s upbringing and deep dive into Buddhism at an early age which included hours of chanting mantra which led to some sharing of wisdom on language, decipherability, thought processes, and neurological rewiring. JMX shares their love of mugwort, how they use it in incense and ritual. Speaking of, you can purchase the magical stuff that she makes via artemisianegra.com/  In the vein of mugwort and ritual, we talk self care and one of JMX’s favorite Midnight Medicine Journey shows on Nap Ministry and rest as resistance.

We close out the show talking about anger, desire, happiness, and gratitude. I am grateful for Jaguar Mary X and the archive of her shows that await me.

#120 MK Burnell “More Music Podcast: Quarantine Beat”

Still in quarantine, still making it happen!

Today’s guest is MK Burnell, host of the brand new podcast More Music Please: Quarantine Beat, where she chats with music industry professionals about life during COVID… and whatever else comes up. Until the pandemic shook things up, she was a radio host and music director with a particular passion for supporting local and emerging artists. She lives outside of Kingston with her partner and dogs. When not in lockdown, she performs with bands Locofreeq, Uncledad and Cold Flavor Repair.

We check in about how she’s doing during the pandemic, how she got through being let go from her radio host gig mid quarantine, starting a podcast, some of her favorite musicians like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, making music with her bands, mindfulness and hiking. So good.

We listened to a favorite song of MK’s, “13 Beaches” by Lana Del Rey.

Tune into her podcast, new episodes released every Monday!

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/

#106 Comedians Jessieca McNabb and Perla Ayora

I managed to keep things relatively sane with these two comedians in the house today. Perla Ayora, Tech Coordinator at Radio Kingston and Stand Up Comedian talks about her roots in the Yucatan, Mayan culture, leaving for the States, the discrimination she faced and how she came to try stand up comedy about a year ago. Jessieca McNabb started performing stand up in the early ’90s and hasn’t stopped making people laugh since. Aside from splitting sides each week as co-host on No One Like You, she is a regular emcee of various comedy events all over the Hudson Valley. She’s been involved in community activism with Harambee Kingston and now co-hosts Harambee Radio, a weekly show on RadioKingston.

We get into a little of the personal and a little of the professional. Uncovering a bit of their process, why comedy is important to them, a transformational life experience each of them had, Black History month, empathy, building connections, breaking down walls, what they do to take care of themselves and lots more. I started this show thinking that doing stand up would be frightening, and I haven’t changed my mind. The fascinating thing is that they both feel the same way. They experience that fear before each of their shows yet they still get out there and do it. I am seriously impressed. Brava ladies!

You can catch them next on February 14th at the Valentine’s Day Love and Laugh Get Down. Lots is happening for Black History Month here in Kingston like Sip and Paint this Sunday, February 9th and Nubian Cafe on Wednesday, February 12th hosted by Radio Kingston’s SB. I’ll say it again here folks, Black History is everyone’s History so it’s a great time to think about what that means for you and how you celebrate your neighbors year-round. If you want to get involved or support Harambee, you can learn more here.

Today’s show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, http://www.radiokingston.org.
