326 Kaitlyn Murray “la vie apres l’amour” A Sustainable Fashion Brand

Kaitlyn Murray has been care-taking her brand, la vie apres l’amour, a sustainable fashion organization since 2017. Born and raised in Red Hook, NY, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and went on to work at Hermes in customer service and merchandising. Her life long love affair with thrifting and her studies in sustainability led her to leave Hermes and open her own line of clothing and eventually a physical shop in the Rondout of Kingston which is many things including her studio, a retails space, an events space, and a community hang out where she’s hosted mending nights, community dinners, a vinyl dj event, artist talks, a clothing swap, a clay building workshop, and recently a floral arranging day.

In addition to tending to her store, she created Hudson Valley Sustainable Fashion Week in 2023. She hosted several events and produced and showed in the first ever HV Sustainable runway show on Rose Hill Farm in Red Hook. It was a collective show, showcasing 7 HV sustainable designers and 4 recent alumni from the Marist Fashion Program. It was a dream and the goal was to highlight designers doing this work in the area and make them known to the public.

Today Kaitlyn shares her journey into fashion and how it shifted over the years, making the leap into its current iteration. We learn about her brand, much of what her line consists of and her process. She educates us about the impact of the fashion industry on both the people charged with making it and the many ways the production of new clothes extracts from and damages our earth and even our own health. She has several upcoming events that she is hosting and otherwise supporting such as a clay handbuilding workshop, a community dinner, a film screening of Fashion Reimagined about doing fashion sustainably, and the big Hudson Valley Sustainable Fashion Week runway show in September.

We end with a little self care chat, and I left feeling inspired and hopeful!

#148 Kelly Lyndgaard and Unshattered’s “Ambassadors of Possibility”

Kelly Lyndgaard is the CEO and President of Unshattered and has been a leader and trailblazer for women throughout her lifetime.

In addition to her impact in the non-profit world, she spent 16 years in the IT industry building, running, and transforming technology organizations. In 2015, she stepped away from her executive career to focus solely on the social enterprise she founded named Unshattered.

Kelly is an engineer and physicist by training, but a problem solver and strategist at heart.  Inspired by the strength and commitment of women doing the hard work of recovery, she wanted to help them build them a path forward to sustained sobriety and economic independence. Her heart was broken seeing relapses occur for those who had worked so hard to attain sobriety but had no safe place to return to after recovery.

Kelly is ignited by challenge – in any arena of life – and loves nothing more than seeing potential where others do not and bringing it to life. She’s on a mission to end relapse by providing job skills and employment for those who traditionally have difficulty finding employment.

Unshattered employs women in recovery to craft handbags and accessories out of repurposed materials such as retired military uniforms, sets from Broadway shows, manufacturing scrap and more. They have been awarded by the President of the United States for their creative and effective work in fighting the opioid crisis and were the 2018 Hudson Valley nonprofit of the year.

Unshattered boasts a 0% relapse rate for the women employed with the company.

Kelly and her husband live in Dutchess County, NY. She is a graduate of Taylor University and a Praxis Fellow. Outside of being an entrepreneur she loves reading, conquering challenges, and finding unexpected delight! On her days off you’ll find her curled up with a mug a tea, a stack of books, and her rescue dog, Bell.

You can find her on Instagram and Twitter and learn more about Unshattered at http://www.unshattered.org.

Today we talk about being a physicist and engineer, walking away from it to pursue her passion to help others, overcoming judgment, how choices aren’t character, how to grow a social enterprise, the strength of women, and the power in women helping women. You can purchase an Unshattered handbag from their website and even work with them on custom bags from repurposed materials that are near and dear to your heart. With your purchases AND your donations, they are able to help women coming out of recovery get back on their feet, find an apartment, and gain employment so that they can break the powerful cycle of addiction. Unshattered conservatively estimates that they save the state $103,000 a year in costs associated with addiction and incarceration for each woman they are able to help break the cycle. Become an ambassador of possibility by giving them your support!

#133 Anna Hafner “Artist in the New World Pandemic”

Anna Hafner is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in the areas of costume, painting, performance art, illustration, lo-fi installation and DIY puppetry. She is a creator of occasional rituals and happenings.

Anna’s performance art manifests in two ways: first, as a colorful pantheon of costumed creatures, who live amongst hand painted backdrops filled with verdant textures; second, darker solo performances, using waste to question human excess and societal control of the feminine. She uses tactics of mime, Butoh and improv to lead performance rituals.  Anna’s costume and mask work are made with recycled mixed media and trash is often incorporated within each performance, through set, prop or costume.  Imagery of her performances are echoed within her illustrations, paintings, prints and backdrops; they are expressive and mystical, honoring nature through symbol and landscape.

Drawing on esoteric ideas, mythic symbolism and nature, Anna’s work aims to speak abstractly and emotionally about the greater struggle of excessive waste within society, the destruction of nature, uncontrolled human greed, and our lost connection with the Earth.

Today we talk about lots of important stuff like… identity, being a performance artist during a time when there are no performances, shifting her studio and work during COVID, teaching art, the healing power of creating, hope, mental health, self love, her creative process, self care, taking care of the earth and bunches more.

You can join Anna’s Patreon HERE and get access to all goodies she so generously births into this world and follow her on IG here! Oh and Anna recommends checking out Taraka Larson’s “The Now Age.”
