Happy Women’s History Month! In collaboration with Women’s History Month Kingston, we bring the discussion of Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch to a close this week, diving into Chapter 5, “Colonization and Christianization.” We went way off text, but had a very meaningful (to me) discussion about some vitally important topics. Rakel Stammer is an artist and teacher who primarily works in painting and drawing, but also dabbles in sound, installation, collage, writing, photography, printmaking and performance. Her work has been published in several magazines, anthologies and journals across the world and she has exhibited in Denmark, Sweden and the U.S. She was on the show before, pre-COVID in October 2019, talking about her series “The C%#& (C-word) Drawings” completed during a residency at Deer Creek Collective. Rakel speaks publicly and writes about capitalism, art, trauma, dominance and violence, seen through an anti-capitalist, intersectional feminist lens!

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist (The New Yorker magazine) and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be her gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. She is also a writer, has appeared on HBO and NPR, performed in various esteemed settings, is an alumnus of the O+ Festival, and most recently added teaching via SUNY New Paltz to her list of accomplishments.

Happy Women’s History Month! In collaboration with Women’s History Month Kingston, we continue the discussion of Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch. This week we’re discussing Chapter 3, “The Great Caliban:The Struggle Against the Rebel Body.” In Silvia Federici’s words, “[o]ne of the preconditions for capitalist development was the process that Michel Foucault defined as the ‘disciplining of the body,’ which in my view consisted of an attempt by state and church to transform the individual’s power into labor-power. This chapter examines how this process was conceived and mediated in the philosophical debates of the time, and the strategic interventions which it generated.” Lots of juicy stuff in this one folks! Today, I welcome back Jordan Scruggs, Director of the New Start for Women Program at SUNY Ulster. She was a guest way back in the day on Nov. 7, 2018 for Episode No. 42 and then again on Sept. 12, 2019 for Episode No. 86. I obviously love her! Jordan is joined today by two phenomenal women.

Arlene Coffey is 32 years old, a proud mama and a lover of life. She began New Start for Women through SUNY Ulster in July of 2020, where she is currently working on a certificate in General Management. Being in New Start has helped her to remember her passion for the business world and learning in general and she is enjoying the process of finding herself again. She loves being creative and has been doing a press-on nail venture on the side for fun during Covid season. She has high hopes for owning her own business one day and helping other women to find their voices and follow their dreams.

Rachel Collins is 41 years old and currently a full-time student at SUNY Ulster, where her major is Business and Entrepreneurial Studies. She has a license in esthetics and hopes to start her own skincare business from home once she completes her associates degree this spring. Her journey toward this goal started with New Start for Women as a member of the first cohort. Rachel graduated from the program with a certificate in General Management in May of 2020. In her downtime she enjoys reading, watching murder mysteries, playing Call of Duty with her 18-year-old son and snuggling with her cat, Arya.

Both of them share their life journeys which have included hardship, doubt, fear, resilience, perseverance, self-love, self-care, and hustle. Congrats ladies on being role models to all of us!

Edie Pijpers is a self-taught artist who picked up her first guitar at 20 in L.A. to learn a couple of chords so she could start expressing and writing. She learned to record and produce her own music and the year 2020 gave rise to a brand new album We Are The Ones. Edie is also a painter who started painting in her late twenties in Nashville which led her to creating and publishing several children’s books. She also plays around with animation, see her short film “Day” and music videos. Her process of painting as with music is about flow. Of not believing that mistakes exist. Any move is part of the whole and the creation. It requires a great amount of trust. And diligent work/practice!

Today we talk about her start in music and how it has progressed over the years to her most recent album, “We Are the Ones.” We listen to several songs, talk about the meanings of them which takes us into conversations about the shadow, our selves, presence and intention. Of course we also talk about her whimsical art, being in the flow, meditating and self care.

Today’s guest is Maryline Damour of Kingston Design Connection and Damour Drake. After many years working in marketing, business development and public relations for firms such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PwC and Accenture, Maryline returned to school to study interior design at Parsons The New School for Design. Originally from Haiti, Maryline has been actively involved in interior design projects in Haiti since the earthquake of 2010. She is currently developing a vocational school in Léogâne, Haiti focused on teaching safer building techniques and practices for the construction industry.

The Kingston Design Connection mission is to aid the creative community in the Hudson Valley to connect, collaborate and support each other’s businesses. It hosted its first design showhouse in October 2018 to showcase and celebrate Hudson Valley design which included 10 interior designers and over 100 local makers, artists and retailers. It has grown exponentially each year and has been featured in Architectural Digest; House Beautiful; Hudson Valley Magazine; Aspire Design and Home; Chronogram; Upstate House; Almanac Weekly; WSJ; and MSN.

Today we talked about how Maryline went from being a literature major to a marketing professional to an interior designer and most recently forming the Kingston Design Connection. Hint, it’s all really just communication. She’s full of deep wisdom and a desire to build community, and I loved our conversation!

Tracy Givens Hunter is Director of the Navigator Program at Public Policy and Education Fund of New York. She is an active practitioner of Restorative Justice Practices and Circle Keeping with Dutchess County Mediation Center and Westchester Restorative Justice Center. Tracy has over 20 years experience as an Activist and organizer regarding Racial Justice, Women Rights, Criminal justice, People’s Institute Survival and Beyond and Human Rights with organizations such as the NAACP, ACLU, BLM, and ENJAN. Tracy has given Presentations, Mediated and provided Trainings to private organizations and school districts and on January 30th, she is moderating “Council of the Elders” an event sponsored by Hold the Line taking place on Saturday, January 30th from 2-4pm. She’s had an exceptionally adventurous life, teaching third grade for five years in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles, playing the character Snow White at Disneyland, as a TV News Reporter for KABC Channel 7 in Hollywood, working on the staff of Senator Charles H. Percy (Illinois) in Washington, D.C., firewalked 18 times with Tony Robbins, swam with dolphins, was a film and stage actress and a professional Precision Stunt Car Driver for TV Commercials and films. She healed herself from a significant incapacitating spinal injury and is the author of several books including Find Your Friggin Joy.

I recorded this interview early in the year, pre-COVID. As the world seemed to change because of the pandemic, I put it on the shelf for a more appropriate time. As the year was coming to a close, I listened back to my conversation with Belinda which felt like a much needed healing session and the perfect way to end the year. Belinda shares her adventurous life story and the wisdom she learned along the way including the power of forgiveness, believing in your ability to heal, overcoming fear, releasing the programming in the unconscious mind, cutting cords, Huna and working through the grief of losing her son to a drug overdose. The challenges of the pandemic won’t end magically come January 1st, but I hope that we’ve learned ways to move through the challenges with the support of and by supporting others, to bring greater ease to all. I really appreciated your mission on celebrating and uplifting women with women. It was very evident that envy is not the point of the show, it’s sharing, learning, appreciating the journey. I appreciate the hosts addressing that on the first show. It turned envy into aspiration. Thank you for keeping the podcast going, there’s a lot of value that I got from just the first episode.
