S.1 E.15 Jacquelyn Marie Brown “The Witch’s Dance”

Jacquelyn Marie Shannon is a ritual artist, occult scholar-educator, and PhD candidate in Theatre and Performance at The Graduate Center, CUNY in New York City. Her work explores dramaturgies of magic, witchcraft, haunting, and the supernatural, with a particular interest in artistic and ritual processes that engage spirit(s), alternative temporalities, altered and liminal states, hypnosis, visions, and dreams. Her dissertation explores the relationship between theatricality, embodied technique, and ritual efficacy in producing experiences of magic and transformation in The Witch’s Dance. Jacquelyn has performed, presented research, taught, and facilitated ritual experiences across the US and internationally. Her work draws on more than 20 years of training and practice across Japanese butoh, expressionist dance, physical and psychodramatic theatre, contemporary performance, and ritual. For the past 11 years, she has developed and taught “Ghostly Practice,” a constellation of movement and ritual techniques for working through the body with memory, haunting, spirit, and the more-than-human. As a practice-based extension of her dissertation research, she has also developed “The Witch’s Dance” as both a ritual movement practice and an embodied magical system, which she shares through performances, workshops, and retreat intensives. Her research and artistic practice also inform her work as a magic and ritual consultant across theatre, performance, and public ceremonial contexts.

Our conversation begins with Jacqueline’s early memories of hauntings as experienced with her grandfather and how that prepared her for her life’s work. She shares her relationship to witchcraft and magic and how they are pathways to shifting reality and embracing the impossible. We hear about her work in ritual performance and how for her it’s important that it do something, not merely represent something. Her care for creating the container and guiding participants through Ghostly Practice and The Witch’s Dance is apparent in the way she allows us a peak into that ineffable work. She’s hosting a Winter Solstice Retreat: A 5-day immersion into the mysteries of embodied magic and ritual movement through the force of the witch Dec. 18-22, 2026 in Texas Hill Country.   https://jacquelynmarieshannon.com/winter-solstice-retreat To learn more about Jacquelyn and her work, or to get in touch, visit jacquelynmarieshannon.com.

#195 Samhain and Connecting with Our Ancestors

Today I wander into the Festival of Samhain and share some traditions or rituals that may inspire you. This includes a conversation and experiential practice to contemplate the lives of our ancestors based off of the book, My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakam. P.S. the show officially starts around minute 11, but I thought the superstition conversation with my colleagues was thematically appropriate to include!

Here are the Youtubers who provided some of the information and rituals shared -> Rebekka of the Witches’ Cookery, and Alwyn Oak.

Here’s the Spotify playlist of the songs we listened to throughout the show. Feel free to use them as you feel called for the contemplation practices I offer in today’s show, or just pause the recording and sit in silence, journal or listen to your own music.

Plus, here’s the info on the Ringing the Bells for Climate Change event I mentioned.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston.

#164 “Caliban and the Witch” Part 4 Book Discussion

Happy Women’s History Month! In collaboration with Women’s History Month Kingston, we continue the discussion of Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch. This week we’re discussing Chapter 4, “The Great Witch-Hunt in Europe,” summed up here: “You are the true Hyenas, that allure us with the fairness of your skins and when folly has brought us within your reach, you leap upon us. You are the traitors of Wisdom, the impediment to Industry… the clogs to Virtue and the goads that drive us to all vices, impiety and ruin. You are the Fool’s Paradise, the wiseman’s Plague and the Grand Error of Nature.” Walter Charlton, Ephesian Matron, 1659. Lots to be said about this!!! Next week, we dive into Chapter 5, “Colonization and Christianization.” Let us know your thoughts and questions!

Who’s in this conversation?

Rakel Stammer is an artist and teacher who primarily works in painting and drawing, but also dabbles in sound, installation, collage, writing, photography, printmaking and performance. Her work has been published in several magazines, anthologies and journals across the world and she has exhibited in Denmark, Sweden and the U.S. She was on the show before, pre-COVID in October 2019, talking about her series “The C%#& (C-word) Drawings” completed during a residency at Deer Creek Collective. Rakel speaks publicly and writes about capitalism, art, trauma, dominance and violence, seen through an anti-capitalist, intersectional feminist lens!

Carolita Johnson is a cartoonist (The New Yorker magazine) and illustrator from NYC. She spent 13 years in Paris, France, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design. In Paris, she earned a masters degree in Modern Letters and Linguistics, and got some (admittedly very idiosyncratic) chops in pre-doctoral Medieval Anthropology, which turned out to be her gateway drug to cartoons and illustration. She is also a writer, has appeared on HBO and NPR, performed in various esteemed settings, is an alumnus of the O+ Festival, and most recently added teaching via SUNY New Paltz to her list of accomplishments.

Feminist activism!!! Listen to and support the women of Ghana. Here’s their NPR story about being banished to the “witch camps.” Today we heard their songs, “Witch Song,” “Love,” “Hatred Drove Me From My Home,” and “We Are No Different Than You.”

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken, host of Freedom Highway, AND produced, hosted, and edited by ME, Theresa, so please forgive any hiccups.
