Today Marielena Ferrer covers for Theresa and welcomes guest Elinor Levy or Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor Levy joined Arts-Mid Hudson in September 2016 as the Folk Arts Program manager. A native of Oakland, California, she has bounced around the country from California to Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now New York. Previously, she worked in Las Vegas as the folklorist for Clark County Parks and Recreation and as executive director of the Northwest Jersey Folklife Project. Having spent the last decade as a folklorist consultant and an adjunct professor, she is excited to be doing public folklore again especially in the culturally rich Hudson Valley. She has a master’s degree in Anthropology from California State University, Sacramento and a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is a folk artist in her own right as a third generation knitter on her mother’s side. In the past three years she has added spinning her own yarn to her skills and looks forward each year to helping a friend shear a small flock of Jacob sheep.

We discuss being a folklorist, the art of observing, participatory research, Cultural Humility, the activities at the Broadway Bubble in Kingston – not your average laundromat, and all the work Elinor oversees and shepherds at Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor can be reached at elevy@artsmidhudson.org.

Aurora Brush is an alchemist who uses the processes of print and book making to manifest dreams into reality. They are a queer divinatory artist, tarot deck creator, print and book maker living in Kingston NY.  Aurora is the founder,  editor, and producer of Cosmic Dog House Press, an independent publishing service located here in midtown Kingston!

Marielena is covering for Theresa again today and welcomes Lara Giordano from the D.R.A.W. Lara Giordano (Founder, Director of The D.R.A.W.) is an arts advocate, artist, retired Kingston High School art teacher and lifelong art educator. Giordano was instrumental in the design and implementation of KCSD’s arts driven interdisciplinary curriculum and founder of the PUGG program which started as an extension of her advanced art curriculum at the high school. She is the Founder of the Department of Regional Art Workers (The D.R.A.W.) and a Board Member of Kingston Midtown Arts District (MAD). Giordano is a dedicated community member and has served on the Board of Women’s Studio Workshop, served on the City of Kingston Arts Commission, and is committed to equity and access to the arts and art education for all.

Lara shares her background, the evolution of her work post teaching which led to the D.R.A.W. and all the good work happening there now.

Today, guest host Erica Brown welcomes the Waterfall Unity Alliance to the show. They are an organization focused on protecting Skóhale (the Schoharie Valley) and our Mother Earth. The alliance aims to build alliances across movements and cultures while finding solutions to the challenges of our time.

We feature key members of the Waterfall Unity Alliance, including Liv Watyana’li:yo Bigtree, a Turtle Clan member of the Onyota’a:ka (Oneida) tribe. Liv’s background in visual art and her upbringing by strong Onkwehonwe (Oneida) women shape her commitment to decolonization, healing, and spirituality.

Sandra Owén:nakon Deer-Standup, a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawa:ke, has been an advocate for land defense and political activism since childhood. With over 20 years of experience in teaching elementary education in the Kanien’keha language, Sandra also works as an educational administrator and is pursuing her doctoral degree in education.

Bethany Yarrow, a board member of the Waterfall Unity Alliance, is a song keeper, earth activist, and student of spiritual traditions. Through her music, Bethany aims to protect the land and water, build community, and find collaborative solutions to address the existential threats of our time.

We also introduce Kawenniiosta Jock, a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) and member of the Wolf Clan from Akwesasne. As a mother, activist, artist, and full-spectrum doula, Kawenniiosta works towards restoring collective balance and preserving her people’s way of life through traditional support, cultural teachings, and language preservation.

Additionally, we touch upon the recent Land Buy-Back Catch Up and the purchase of Berry Farm in Schoharie, emphasizing the significance of land preservation. We also invite our listeners to join the upcoming Waterfall Unity Festival, a three-day benefit concert and celebration held from Friday, July 28th to Sunday, July 30th at 1160 Bear Ladder Road, Fultonham, NY 12071.

Midway through we are joined by Sarrah Danziger, Education Coordinator at the Center for Photography in Kingston. Sarrah is a photographer, video artist, educator, and master printer. Danziger received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She created, “Listen to New Orleans,” an oral history archive, artist book, and long-term public installation, and has exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; and at the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Danziger was raised in Woodstock, and now lives and works in Kingston. Her work as an artist and educator focuses on community-based activities and individual storytelling, positioning her well to expand collaborative partnerships and art making programs in the community.

The center offers many ways of connecting with photography and creative imagery including their upcoming Kingston Photo Festival, July 21-23. Lots of cool ways to join in the fun from film screenings to workshops. Check out their website for all the details.

Lindsey Danis is a queer, gender expansive writer based in the Hudson Valley, New York. Lindsey received a BA in English from Vassar College and an MFA in Fiction from Emerson College. Lindsey is Creative Nonfiction editor at Atlas + Alice and runs the queer outdoor travel blog Queer Adventurers.

Lindsey’s nonfiction has appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, AFAR, Longreads, Eater, and Catapult, received a notable mention in Best American Travel Writing 2019, and is anthologized in “The Best New True Crime Stories: Unsolved Crimes and Mysteries”  and “Nourishing Resistance: Stories of Food, Protest, and Mutual Aid.” Lindsey received an Individual Artist Commission for an oral history essay project, “Queer Homesteading in the Hudson Valley.”

Lindsey is currently working on a book proposal on queer travel, with themes of queer joy, personal power, and transformation.

Our conversation begins by discussing the notion of belonging. Inspired by Lindsey’s personal journey of feeling like she didn’t belong as a young person in school and specifically in yoga studios, she reflects on how her sense of belonging arrived during a recent LGBTQ focused yoga retreat.

Related to her challenges of making yoga a more regular part of her life, Lindsey raised an issue I had not considered before, the ways in which the LGBTQ community is impacted financially. We didn’t have time to go into this fully, so I asked Lindsey to share some of her writing on this subject.

Lindsey expands further about her writing, how and why she became a writer and how she got to where she is today, writing and editing in various spaces with a focus on money and how she likes to spend it — food and travel — from a perspective that centers LGBTQ voices. I highly recommend following along on Lindsey’s Instagram account where she/they shares regular inspiration for other writers and deep thoughts and perspectives on the LGBTQ experience.

Today I celebrate Juneteenth by paying homage to the contributions of African Americans which have significantly impacted me, that being their music. There’s no greater medicine for me than music. I consume A LOT OF IT, so I am grateful to all of those who’ve enhanced my life, helped me through crisis, uplifted my spirit, and moved me to dance through their creative work. This month’s Spirituality and Politics show with Marielena Ferrer has us talking about belonging. Inspired by the content of this article, Marielena and I talk about what it means to belong, both in our own lives and as it relates to immigrants who struggle to belong at the most fundamental level. In the second half of the show we are joined by Phyllis Hjorth an artist with an exhibit, “The Neighborhood” now showing at the gallery at the Old Dutch Church, 272 Wall Street, Kingston on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-3 and by appointment. Phyllis’s exhibit will showcase paintings done circa 2000 when she had her studio in Hudson, NY. There she met the neighbors who she would take photos of and eventually paint. She shares the richness of the experience and what she hopes to inspire by the showing of these impressive paintings from that time. The exhibit is open until July 27th with an artists reception on July 1st from 2-4pm.

Today my guest is Donna Klassen, Co-founder and CEO of Let’s Talk Menopause. In addition to her work at Let’s Talk Menopause, she is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 30 years of experience. Her areas of practice include trauma, infertility, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. In addition to her private practice, Donna served as admissions and clinical director at the Motherhood Center of New York from 2017-2020, and has held supervisory roles at SUNY Stony Brook, the Jewish Board of Children and Family Services, and Safespace.

They started Let’s Talk Menopause because they’ve learned from their individual experiences—and those of just about every other woman they know—that too many women do not get the information, support, and healthcare they need during menopause. Too many women are suffering unnecessarily. Too many women don’t know what to ask.

Let’s Talk Menopause aims to change this through education and advocacy. They want to empower women to seek the relief they need and encourage them to talk openly about their menopause experience.

Donna shares information about menopause, the health implications including mental and emotional well-being and treatment options available including hormone replacement therapy and skills based therapy like cognitive behavior therapy. We also briefly discussed the details in this NY Times article that I share from about the cost of menopause for women in the workplace. Check out their podcast “Hello Menopause” and their weekly talks featuring in-depth discussions with a wide range of specialists—from gynecologists and urologists to physical therapists and psychiatrists—to help you understand how menopause impacts your body, emotions and lives and to provide you with options for navigating the changes you may experience.
