#153 Deep Thoughts for the New Year with Theresa

Slipping into the New Year with some deep thoughts about the things I think about. Like… revisiting my last year’s resolution to practice non-judgment and how I failed at it because of things like Kundalini Yoga and QAnon (the irony is not lost on me that as I was doing my show they were storming the capitol), my adjustment and recommitment to non-judgment inspired by Charles Eisenstein, vibration, serendipity, signs from the Universe, devotion, self-care and starting a book club! Who’s in? Seriously, let’s pick a book that inspires that we can talk about on the show. Plus, I marry everyone to themselves and share the words of David Foster Wallace that resonate deeply with me. Here’s my Youtube Channel if you want to join in the daily 15-17 minute practice. Hope everyone’s year is a good one!

Today we heard TedxTalks by Joanna McEwen and Ulla Suokko.

#152 Belinda Farrell “Find Your Friggin’ Joy”

Belinda Farrell is a Certified Master Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner, Huna Practitioner, and Reconnective Healing Practitioner. She’s had an exceptionally adventurous life, teaching third grade for five years in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles, playing the character Snow White at Disneyland, as a TV News Reporter for KABC Channel 7 in Hollywood, working on the staff of Senator Charles H. Percy (Illinois) in Washington, D.C., firewalked 18 times with Tony Robbins, swam with dolphins, was a film and stage actress and a professional Precision Stunt Car Driver for TV Commercials and films. She healed herself from a significant incapacitating spinal injury and is the author of several books including Find Your Friggin Joy.

I recorded this interview early in the year, pre-COVID. As the world seemed to change because of the pandemic, I put it on the shelf for a more appropriate time. As the year was coming to a close, I listened back to my conversation with Belinda which felt like a much needed healing session and the perfect way to end the year. Belinda shares her adventurous life story and the wisdom she learned along the way including the power of forgiveness, believing in your ability to heal, overcoming fear, releasing the programming in the unconscious mind, cutting cords, Huna and working through the grief of losing her son to a drug overdose. The challenges of the pandemic won’t end magically come January 1st, but I hope that we’ve learned ways to move through the challenges with the support of and by supporting others, to bring greater ease to all. Happy New Year to everyone! Wishing you a joyful 2021!!!

#151 Rachel Bernstein LMFT “IndoctriNation Podcast”

I’m doing cartwheels about today’s guest! Rachel Bernstein, LMFT, has been working with victims of cults and emotional abusers for 27 years. She believes that given the right set of circumstances, it’s all too easy for anyone to fall prey to sociopaths and manipulators. She is the host of IndoctriNation: A weekly podcast covering cults, manipulators, and how to protect yourself from systems of control. She wanted to give survivors a chance to tell their stories and for experts to teach us what they know about high control groups. Her goal for IndoctriNation is to empower listeners to protect themselves and those they love from predators, toxic personalities, and destructive organizations.

Little known fact…I’ve been mildly obsessed or perhaps just highly curious about all things cults this year. I’ll tell you more about that in the show, or you can read about it here. Rachel’s podcast has been extremely informative and healing to me, helping me understand some of my own experience navigating a high control group.  Some of the subjects that we get into on the show today are how to identify systems of control, the situations that make indoctrination possible, fervor and awe, betrayal blindness, how to remove yourself from a group, and how to support a loved one who is caught up in one.

Rachel’s approach to this subject is not only effective, but it’s also very informative and very compassionate. I hope you enjoy, and if possible support her work!

Here are the direct links to the shows I referenced: Consolidation of Church and State, Mark Vicente and NXIVM, QAnon, Fervor and Awe with Yuval Laor. And interesting that her most recent is about Kundalini Yoga!

Shauna Keating has a pretty awesome career as a user experience designer, teaches design for the web as an adjunct professor, and is a mentor at Thinkful‘s UX/UI Design program. She’s serving as President of AIGA Upstate New York and is a Co-Organizer and Emcee of the Hudson Valley Tech Meetup. She believes in building inclusive and friendly software. Prior to that she was in radio and television and worked for a non-profit supporting the disabled. She’s a decent musician, a poetaster, a wannabe illustrator, and a culinary mad-scientist. Sometimes she slips away from the world to get lost in the mountains with her dog, Garbo. She is deeply committed to getting involved in her community and spends time volunteering with Citizen Action NY. Last BUT NOT least, she’s co-host of HVtech too!

Topics for today include, imposter syndrome, beginner’s mind, reinventing after unemployment, pandemic life, accessibility in tech, alt-text, UX/UI, story telling, roller derby and the harp.

Here’s an article authored by Shauna on Human Centered Design.

HV Tech has it’s next meetup on Wednesday, December 16th at 6pm, and they’re doing “Lightning Talks,” very short presentations lasting just a few minutes on a wide variety of exciting topics. I’ll be tuning in. Hope to see you there!

#148 Kelly Lyndgaard and Unshattered’s “Ambassadors of Possibility”

Kelly Lyndgaard is the CEO and President of Unshattered and has been a leader and trailblazer for women throughout her lifetime.

In addition to her impact in the non-profit world, she spent 16 years in the IT industry building, running, and transforming technology organizations. In 2015, she stepped away from her executive career to focus solely on the social enterprise she founded named Unshattered.

Kelly is an engineer and physicist by training, but a problem solver and strategist at heart.  Inspired by the strength and commitment of women doing the hard work of recovery, she wanted to help them build them a path forward to sustained sobriety and economic independence. Her heart was broken seeing relapses occur for those who had worked so hard to attain sobriety but had no safe place to return to after recovery.

Kelly is ignited by challenge – in any arena of life – and loves nothing more than seeing potential where others do not and bringing it to life. She’s on a mission to end relapse by providing job skills and employment for those who traditionally have difficulty finding employment.

Unshattered employs women in recovery to craft handbags and accessories out of repurposed materials such as retired military uniforms, sets from Broadway shows, manufacturing scrap and more. They have been awarded by the President of the United States for their creative and effective work in fighting the opioid crisis and were the 2018 Hudson Valley nonprofit of the year.

Unshattered boasts a 0% relapse rate for the women employed with the company.

Kelly and her husband live in Dutchess County, NY. She is a graduate of Taylor University and a Praxis Fellow. Outside of being an entrepreneur she loves reading, conquering challenges, and finding unexpected delight! On her days off you’ll find her curled up with a mug a tea, a stack of books, and her rescue dog, Bell.

You can find her on Instagram and Twitter and learn more about Unshattered at http://www.unshattered.org.

Today we talk about being a physicist and engineer, walking away from it to pursue her passion to help others, overcoming judgment, how choices aren’t character, how to grow a social enterprise, the strength of women, and the power in women helping women. You can purchase an Unshattered handbag from their website and even work with them on custom bags from repurposed materials that are near and dear to your heart. With your purchases AND your donations, they are able to help women coming out of recovery get back on their feet, find an apartment, and gain employment so that they can break the powerful cycle of addiction. Unshattered conservatively estimates that they save the state $103,000 a year in costs associated with addiction and incarceration for each woman they are able to help break the cycle. Become an ambassador of possibility by giving them your support!

#147 Grace Villamil “Multidisciplinary Artist”

Today’s guest is Grace Villamil, a multidisciplinary artist exploring interconnectivity between humans & nature through installation, video, and sound. She has performed live-video manipulations as accompaniment to electronic & live instruments in venues over the globe. Her work TAYO was done in collaboration with Ione (Pauline Oliveros’s life partner) and Lisa Kelley (founder of the deep listening community) to bring awareness to the separation of children and families & give support to immigrant communities in Kingston and around the world. Most especially this project directly addresses the immigration issue in the United States focusing on the children, women, and families who have been separated by ICE. You can view TAYO at 615 Broadway in Kingston.

TAYO, the inclusive “We” or “Us” in Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, (Grace’s background and where her parents emigrated from in the late 1960s) is a light+sound activation and ongoing community sculpture at Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Plaza in Kingston NY. The TAYO sculpture is an on-going community effort where anyone can add a stuffed animal in solidarity with the children. The stuffed animal is a symbol of the unconditional love children are constantly giving to the world. TAYO is a physical manifestation of the strength & love a community can bring in our most trying and difficult time.

Grace shares her experience as a daughter of immigrant parents who wanted the best for their daughter which to them meant full assimilation, and how she later fell in love with the Philippines after traveling there as an adult. We discuss her piece TAYO, and why it was important for her to bring a shrine to the immigrant families to Kingston. Grace openly shares about her journey into and through her art, why and how she makes her pieces and the fear around creating. You can see images of the pieces we discuss as well as enjoy the meditations that are a part of Coloring Book. Grace writes, “It can be freeing to live in and with the unknown and unanswerable,” and this is what we get to explore through her art. Thanks Grace!

I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving! Want to join in with some gratitude practice? Here are 50 Questions to Inspire Gratitude!

#146 Tamika Dunkley of “Seasoned Delicious”

Tamika Dunkley is the CEO of Seasoned Delicious Foods, a Registered Nurse for over a decade specializing in cardiac critical care, a dietitian, a Member of Saugerties Police Reform and Reinvention Committee and a Board Member of Harambee as well as Seasoned Gives. Seasoned Delicious is a dynamic Gourmet Foods Company located in the Hudson Valley, formed in 2016 with the goal to provide a range of delectable, health-based food products. In September of this year, they opened up the SDF cafe in Kingston.

Today we dig into sooooo many things! Being a nurse during COVID, opening a business during COVID, being a mom, wife, business partner, business owner, mentor, board member and board member and… the list goes on. Tamika shares some valuable information on what it’s like to run a food production business and how they grew organically into having their own cafe and store. As a member of the Police Reform and Reinvention Committee, Tamika shares some valuable insight into why these initiatives are not only important, but necessary. Of course we also check in on self care and how she really does it all and still has a welcoming smile on her face! Some things to note in particular: they are looking for mentors for their Seasoned Gives business mentoring program, and they also have a support your neighbor program at the cafe where you can pay it forward if you’ve got it. So much goodness!

Here’s a link to the Guided Chakra Meditation I mentioned at the end of the show. Let me know how you like it!

#145 Perla Ayora and Martha Preve Ayora of “No me Digas!”

Today I get to speak with two creative latinas, Perla and Martha. They’ve collaborated together on several projects including this short, OFF OFF OFF OFF Broadway, and their new radio show “No me Digas” on Radio Kingston.

Martha Lorena Preve Ayora @martha_preve one half of the dynamic duo behind No Me Digas on Radio Kingston. She is a Mexican theater and film actress, writer, director and producer. She is the co-founder of Something from Abroad  @somethingfromabroad an Indie theater company based in NYC. Originally from the Yucatan Peninsula, Martha loves creating art that mixes English and Spanish and combines her Mexican traditions and culture with American characters. Martha has also been working as a Stage Manager OFF BROADWAY. In her free time, she enjoys reading, going to the beach and watching as much dark comedy as she can!

Perla’s back! As the other half of the creative team behind “No Me Digas” on @radiokingstonny and frequent collaborator with her cuz Martha, she’s been busy since February when she was last on the show to talk about her stand up comedy. Soooo much has happened, or not happened since then, but cleary Perla’s making the most of it while stand-up is on hold. As a stand-up comedian @perla_ayora enjoys writing songs, poems, essays, and… jokes. As a member of the Radio Kingston tech team, if you’ve ever been to one of their supported events, you’ve likely seen her dancing between wires, framing cameras, or setting up a stage with complex technical sound design. Originally from Yucatan, Mexico, Perla now lives in Kingston with her hubby and two children.

No me Digas” Is a bilingual show about top news and contemporary events, hosted by two latina comedy writers, Martha Preve Ayora and me, Perla Ayora. We will make you think and laugh at the same time. It’s fun and informative, informativo y divertido. Irreverent and unapologetic, sorry, maybe just irreverent. This show will promise to exceed your expectations as long as they are very low. Tune in and if you support diversity share this show with the people you like, if not, share it with the people you don’t like. There is a lot of division in this world, we hope at least we can laugh together. It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Spanish, you will end up yelling “¡No Me Digas!”

Here’s the collage class I was talking about with past guest Mel Toth.

Here’s the article I referenced on 3-Minute Commitments!

#144 Hope and Healing with Reiki Master Lorry Salluzzi

Seems like a good day to focus on hope and healing. Allow me to introduce Lorry Salluzzi who is a stress management therapist, Lupus survivor, psychic medium, Reiki master, healer and teacher. She was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in 1988 when her doctor could not be sure she would live through the night. Medications saved her, but she was not getting any better. Through the practice of Reiki and Guided Imagery Meditation, she achieved full remission 2 years later and has had no evidence of the disease since 1990. Her doctor still sends her patients as do many other practitioners in the allopathic and holistic fields. She has had success with many chronic health challenges such as cancer, depression, pain, migraine, Lupus, chronic fatigue, Epstein-Barr, etc. Lorry believes that Reiki and Meditation will change your life in a positive way by managing stress before a disease can occur. And the amazing thing is Reiki is something you can do for yourself whenever you need a little love!

I think it’s important to mention that Lorry’s story is not meant to imply that if you are suffering from some illness that it’s your fault, that you haven’t done enough. Some things are just simply out of your control. Her story and her work is meant to empower you to take positive steps for your own wellbeing if that’s something that resonates with you. Tune in to hear Lorry’s wild journey into Reiki and be inspired into hope for whatever it is you’re needing to call into your life.

Here’s a direct link to Lorry’s offerings on her Patreon page.

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Freedom Highway on Radio Kingston.

Our show music is from Shana Falana !!! and we heard “Everyone’s Gonna Be Okay” by Shana as well as “Devi Ma” by Mother Medicine.
