254 “Jesus and the Lost Goddess”

Today in honor of Christmas and “Jesus’s Birthday,” I read from the book, Jesus and the Lost Goddess: The Secret Teachings of the Ancient Christians by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy. I love this book and wanted to share some of its goodness.

253 Vegan Cooking with Nava Atlas

Today on the show, I welcome Nava Atlas, the author of many vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, with hundreds of thousands of books sold over the years. Her books went vegan at the same time she did — the early 2000s. Some include …

She has been featured or contributed to several publications including The New York Times and the Washington Post. Her recipes and vegan living tips have been featured or cited in numerous publications and she’s been a guest on countless radio shows and podcasts.

Her involvement with the vegan movement and women’s issues overlaps with my work as an artist. It’s all under the umbrella of social justice. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums and is in a number of public and university collections.

In addition to her involvement in all things vegan, she also creates visually driven books. These have include Secret Recipes for the Modern Wife, a darkly humorous look at the gender roles through the lens of a faux 1950s cookbook and The Literary Ladies’ Guide to the Writing Life (2011), which explores the creative processes of twelve classic female authors through their letters, journals, and interviews. The website that grew from this book is Literary Ladies Guide, which strives to be the most comprehensive resource on women’s classic literature.

Here’s the New Moon Astrology from Tanaaz at Forever Conscious.

252 End of the Year Tarot with Marielena Ferrer

Wanting to end the year on a high note, we talk about what the end of the year means and one or two ideas on how to step into the new year. Marielena walks us through what the Tarot reveals to her in the moment as we contemplate the beginning of 2023. Inspired by my weekly chat with Warren and Manuel we revisit the subject of confidence vs. questioning. A favorite quote to sum up that part of the conversation, “Wise people are full of doubt, but the idiots are completely sure.”

Have a fabulous New Year, and let us know if you have something you do to transition into the New Year, or any topic you’d like us to cover next year!

Today’s bonus conversation with Warren and Manuel is about awkward moments.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

251 Adrianne Theetge “Returning to and Taking Care of Self”

Adrianne Theetge moved to the Hudson Valley from Georgia after doing disaster relief in NYC for 9/11 in the AmeriCorps NCCC program. After several years working and serving our elections and our political system, she just recently went back to graduate school to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She loves her new career as an ENL teacher serving students who are learning the English language. Experiencing grief after the loss of her brother and father she shares with us some of what has helped her through that process. She is a proud mother of two daughters. One of which, Aliza, has been a guest on the show in the past. She enjoys being outside running on the beautiful trails in the Hudson Valley, playing soccer, reading, thrift store shopping, exploring new places, and meditating (a new found invaluable tool).

I loved our talk today that actually took place at my house over tea. Adrianne is so warm and thoughtful and shares deeply from her heart space about grief, talking through the hard bits, career change, overcoming fears, letting people in, saying yes or no when that’s her truth, being a mom, and the secrets to her happy marriage.

Today’s bonus conversation with Warren is about brain health.

250 Collaborative Divorce with Nanci Smith, Esq.

Today on the show we’re talking divorce. In the first half of the show I talk about my “divorce” and then share a bit of my experience as a divorce attorney and some general thoughts on divorce and separation. Did you know that 40-50% of all marriages end in divorce? Then in the second half of the show I am joined by Nanci A. Smith, Esq., an attorney licensed to practice in Vermont and New York. She is the chair of the Collaborative Divorce section of the Vermont Bar Association, a leader in her collaborative divorce practice group, and a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. She frequently writes and talks about divorce, family law, ethics, and collaborative divorce practices. She believes that a good divorce is possible when you show up for it with humility, compassion, and the correct support. Smith is the author of Untangling Your Marriage: A Guide to Collaborative Divorce (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Oct 11, 2022). Learn more at nancismithlaw.com.

Today Nancy explains what Collaborative Divorce is, the ways of getting divorced, the things to consider when choosing how to get divorced, how to help kids through a divorce and how to take care of yourself and rebuild after a divorce. NOTE: There was a glitch at some point during the recording of the show where 20 seconds was not picked up so there will be a less than seamless explanation when Nanci is taking about the ways of getting divorced. Apologies!

I shared from this article Why it’s so hard to leave when things aren’t working from the Elephant Journal, and the stats that I shared came from these websites. I also played a few of the songs that got me through my big separation. Those and more can be found at this playlist

248 Spirituality and Politics and Racism -AGAIN- with Marielena Ferrer

Today we begin by sharing and discussing Nikki Fogerty’s weekly Tarot report.

Then we’re off to the races talking about racism, what it means, why it happens and what we think about how to resolve our country’s racist problems. Marielena talks about what motivates people and how this affects their overall behavior including stereotyping and controlling others. This conversation was prompted by the political problems in LA with racist speech.

247 Kevin Ann Jordan “Style Coach and Sustainable Style”

Kevin Ann Jordan@tailoredstylist has been helping women get dressed since age three, starting with her younger sister. Growing up in a remote mountain town in California, she didn’t have a lot of exposure to the fashion world but she loved the bi-annual school clothing shopping trips and reading fashion magazines. Kevin has always wanted to help people, and after a corporate career in the healthcare industry, she realized that she could help women on an individual level through styling. Starting at Stitch Fix, Kevin was trained as a virtual stylist and later started her own business, cultivating a roster of clients around the world from Sydney to New York to Vancouver.

Always practical, Kevin disliked the amount of waste created by the fashion industry, including the amount of low quality clothing piling up in women’s closets. With a mantra of quality over quantity, Kevin began to discover the sustainable fashion movement. Starting in her own closet, Kevin learned just how bad our clothing, and consumerist culture is for the planet, its people and animals.

Today, Kevin makes it her mission to help the planet one closet at a time through her one-on-one work with clients, as well as the Sustainable Style Club she launched in 2022. Kevin is spreading the message about buying less, recycling more, curating mindful, beautiful closets and wearing clothes that make us feel great, without compromising the planet.

She’s my guest this week and shares a million good ideas about how to think about what you’re wearing and how it impacts the environment starting with understanding your style manifesto, to buying less, re-imagining your clothes and how to recycle them. Her work is truly quite transformative, and I am excited to share this conversation with you.

Here are some of the resources and companies Kevin talked about on the show today: Good On You app and website Goodonyou.eco, ForDays – takeback bag, Marine Layer, Smartwool, Nisolo Everlane,Outerknown,Madewell, Eileen Fisher and Patagonia.

245 The Art of Pau

PAU Quintanajornet doesn‘t paint pictures. Pau creates worlds – open invitations to a journey into the beauty of Latin American influences and into the spheres of an artist, who with brushes, paint, ink, paper and wood, playfully turns her world inside out. The cleavage between cultures loosens up. From the friction between her Chilean roots and her German home she draws her own symbolism in bright colors and shapes which grows out of the ground like plants rising to the sky. Birds also occupy a large space in Pau‘s World: in her „cosmovision“ they symbolize free spirits of wisdom and peace, spreading their wings and coping with highs and lows of life.

Born in Chile and raised in the former DDR, Pau moved to Berlin at the age of 15 to broaden her horizons and find a creative outlet. She studied communication-design and illustration at the FHTW before taking off to South America. In Valparaiso, Chile, she recharged her batteries and set the course for her future. Falling in love with the Urban Art Movement and Artivism, Pau started to create her first wall pieces down South.  Although she eventually returned to Germany, Pau would frequently revisit Latin America – her Motherland – her emotional home. During these returns, she might discover something new about her self or her art, socialize with other artists or improve her techniques. In the collective of the Artivists, Muralistas and Street Artists, Pau found birds of the same feather.

Over the last couple of years Pau has participated in numerous festivals and art projects around the world. These travels and interactions with the people around helped her to find a deeper meaning in her work and get more sensitive for different global realties. Inspired by the words of Pablo Neruda, “The murals are the books of the people “ she started a long term art project called PROJECT WALLFLOWERS in 2013. Her work is found on walls in Egypt, Tunisia, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Germany, United States, China, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile … . While Pau‘s walls are on display in public spaces, they are created with the permission of the communities. Her interest lies in sharing her art with people, not creating notoriety for her self.

Today Pau shares begins by telling us how art became the tool she was drawn to as a young person to help her emotionally as her family fled Chile as political refugees and the danger they faced prior to relocating to Germany. There’s no doubt that while her childhood was traumatic, it set her up for some profound perspective on who she is and how she wants to live her life. We talked about her becoming an Artivista and how it was the first identity that she claimed as her own versus it being imposed on her by others. We talked about the masculine and the feminine and how she connected with her own inner manifestations of those as she navigated heartache and learned to cultivate love in all she does. Inspired by this quote: “You also learn that there are real priorities and imposed priorities. The beauty of this lifelong journey is that you get the tremendous opportunity to get to know the real you with all its flaws and all its magic. I gain stability when I feel centered and reflected in my work and with the people around me.” We talk about how she established her own priorities and how she works to live them each day, including how this impacted her “Art World” and how she moves through the “Art Market.” She shared about her work Project Wallflowers, the Blooming Seeds, and #staywithhumanity. We end with a quick share on how she takes care of herself with her active life and how sobremesas are a special part of that.
