244 Permission to Pause with Lauree Ostrofsky

For nearly 20 years, Lauree Ostrofsky has served as a speaker, author, coach, and communications consultant with clients including IBM, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Fodors Travel, Liz Claiborne’s domestic violence awareness program Women’s Work, and the Girl Scouts of the USA. I’m also founder of Hudson Valley Women in Business in upstate New York, and the #HugTour Movement.

She returns to the show today to talk about taking a pause and the permission needed to do so. She shares an abbreviated version of an important life transition that propelled her to where she is today, and then catches us up on where she is now, as a new step-mom and someone who needs to take a break from certain work obligations in order to keep the balance in her life and the clarity in moving forward. We talk about the difficulty in saying no, or taking a pause from something important as well as how she is doing motherhood differently by keeping some of her time and her things sacred to her alone. Finally she walks us through how she finds the “permission” to do difficult things and shares ways for you to find that for yourself.

Her memoir, I’m scared & doing it anyway (2013), shares the hospital epiphany that led her to create a life and career she loves.  Her second book, Simply Leap: Seven Lessons on Facing Fear and Enjoying the Crap out of Your Life (2016), helps you forge your own path of reinvention, cupcakes and dance parties included.

Here’s Nikki Fogerty’s Tarot Report on Lust and the Princess of Discs. Quite a timely reading for us!

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radio Kingston.

Our show music is from Shana Falana!

243 Art with Shauna Kanter and the Art of Living Together with Marielena Ferrer

It’s another conversation inspired by Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer. Today we are joined by Shauna Kanter for the beginning of the show to talk about her upcoming play “Art” which is running Oct. 13th-23rd in Bethany Hall at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, NY. We discussed themes of the play which launched us into a lively conversation in the remainder of the show around conflict, conversations, gentrification, an artists role (or not) in gentrification and valuing art in our economy. It was a lively one which makes sense with yesterday’s Full Moon in Aries. No time for a full moon report, but you can read yours here.

242 Kissey Asplund “Generation Watts” and the Circle Creative Collective “LUMINOUS”

Kissey Asplund of Generation Watts works as a creative consultant specializing in the process of generation and creative subatomic energy. Her creativity expresses itself as a music producer, generator, multi-disciplinary artist, and meditator based in New York City. Amongst other things, today we talk deeply about her unique background, how her creativity is enhanced through meditation, and we get to experience a sound meditation titled Embrace Yourself. Kissey will be at the O+ Festival this weekend, Saturday, October 8th at 7pm at the Good Work Insitute offering: Access Your Connection & Blossom Your Inner Creativity which is a guided meditation where you can experience stillness, deeper connection with self, inner empowerment, and presence—through easy, gentle movements and simple breath techniques. These modalities are used to relax into the body and activate a deeper state of meditation, well-being, and inner creativity. The meditation will oscillate between deeper moments of stillness and release, with moments of building empowerment (inner energy). You can do the class sitting, standing, or lying down. A soundtrack written by Kissey will support your meditation.

Circle Creative Collective and their upcoming event, LUMINOUS.

LUMINOUS is a powerful celebration of the thinning of the veil between worlds, gifting us a unique way to honor our ancestors, the beloved departed, and even aspects of ourselves that we may have buried. Through story, song, community, a journey into the earth and our own hearts, LUMINOUS is a beautiful balm that will help bring light to these coming darker months of introspection.

It is a celebration of life, by honoring grief, impermanence, and the wisdom of the unseen world. Together with BLOOM, this second offering of hope and healing completes an important story of life’s most essential cycles of birth and death. At the heart of LUMINOUS are gifts shared to find light in the dark through re/connection and song. LUMINOUS is a living reminder that we are held by nature, love and magic, and that we hold the alchemizing, transformative powers of creativity.

Happening at 5 and 8pm on October 29th & 30th LUMINOUS will take you into the cavernous heart of the Earth through contemplative story and song. This exquisite interactive experience will remind us that even in the coldest, darkest times we are held by beauty, that we are magic, and that each of us can be a light in the dark.

240 Kingston Design Showhouse with Maryline Damour and Jennifer Salvemini

Joining me today are two highly talented women, Maryline Damour and Jennifer Salvemini.

Maryline is a seasoned interior designer, entrepreneur, and home expert based in the Hudson Valley. She founded the design/construction firm Damour Drake with partner Fred Drake, and then developed Kingston Design Connection and the annual Kingston Design Showhouse to help connect designers, makers, artists, contractors and design/build businesses in the region.

I’m honored to have her return to the show this year considering she has since appeared on the Drew Barrymore show and been featured on a billboard in Time Square! Looking forward to learning about becoming a non-profit and what to look forward to at this year’s showhouse.

P.S. you can catch previous conversations she’s had with other creatives on her radio show, “Maryline By Design.”

Jennifer Salvemini is at heart a producer, bringing elements from her personal passions into cohesive creations, ranging from living spaces to curated events. As a student of anthropology and philosophy, her academic interests evolved into an obsession for aesthetic expression in all areas of culture. She developed an intense appreciation for deep sensory experiences and finds great satisfaction in creating sensational experiences for others. Jennifer is an interior designer living and practicing in the Catskills and is the founder of Hinterland. Hinterland is an unfurling dream. It’s a playground, a sanctuary, and a home – an evolving concept to bridge disciplines, build community and generate joy. You’re invited! Jennifer is also a member of the Kingston Design Connection strategy team, the organization which produces the annual Kingston Design Show House, as well as a participant designer.

This year’s showhouse takes place October 7-23. We talk about lots more including career changes, following your passion, stars aligning, magic happening, and how to keep the design world aimed towards quality of life for all regardless of income levels.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radio Kingston.

237 “Rewinding to January 2018” with Gail Ann Dorsey and Ruth Ungar

I’m still in newborn land so playing an oldie but goodie in honor of Olivia Newton John and this weekend’s Summer Hoot with Olivia super fan and musician Gail Ann Dorsey and Hoot founder and musician Ruth Ungar Merenda. These interviews originally aired in January 2018 when Shana and I were hosting together. It was our second episode! I could listen to these women speak for days…

P.S. Gail says to see the movie Network! And here’s such a profound example of her talent.

We also heard these songs today: My Baby Drinks Water by the Mammals, 2Gether by Naiika Sings, Good Things by Olivia K and the Parkers, La Belleza by Lau Noah, Magic Powers by Liana Gabel, If You Could Hear Me Know by the Mammals. Check out the playlist to listen!

236 “Politics and Spirituality” with Marielena Ferrer and Mya Bailey

Today, Marielena steers the ship and is joined by artist and art historian/historian Mya Bailey for this month’s installment of Politics and Spirituality. Theresa and baby Aiden do make a guest appearance. Today’s conversation approaches reproductive freedom from the perspective of justice and equity and where it’s lacking in the health care system. Mya has focused much of her art on the idea of race and how it’s both impacted her internally as well as externally. Marielena brings themes from this recent NY Time’s Article to the conversation, and we learn about Mya’s artwork placement in the Yale University’s Art and Art History journal @asteriskjournal.

You can find Marielena engaged in the an/aesthetics @rosekill.art.farm opening Sunday August 14, 6-9pm. 177 Binnewater Road.

The show at this location will change and evolve over the next 10 months. Please follow @anaesthetics_rosekill to track this experimental outdoor exhibition.

As an/aesthetics suggests, we sought projects that reimagine collective assumptions about the aesthetically acceptable. For example, how might new paradigms emerge with mutuality and reciprocity, inclusivity, regeneration, imperfection, entanglement, slowness and authenticity? Can we create space for bodily intelligence, the imperceptible, irregularity, playfulness and nonsense?

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.
