293 The O+ show with Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price

Today I share my conversation with Kingston High School Art Teachers Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price about their students’ participation in the O+ Festival. Amy Purdy is the Lead Art Teacher at the High School and works with the National Art Honor Society and teaches ceramics and jewelry. Jenn Brannigan-Tyler teaches the Advanced Painting art students, and Jessica Price teaches the Digital Photo students. Our conversation touches on their students’ experience in interpreting the festival theme FORWARD and gives us a sneak peek at how we can experience their offerings during the O+ Festival. The painting and photo students will have their work displayed at store fronts in Uptown Kingston, and Amy Purdy and students’ TASK party will be happening on Saturday, October 7th from 3-5pm at the YWCA, 209 Clinton Avenue, Kingston, NY.

Here is the Oliver Herring TASK party info.

In the second half of the show I play music from a few of this year’s O+ Festival musicians. If you’re listening via podcast instead of the radio archive, you’ll have to check them out on the playlist. Here’s today’s playlist.

Here’s your Full Moon Report! “The Aries Full Moon holds fantastic potential for helping us to take our ideas from our minds and into physical form. There is an entrepreneurial flow that comes when Aries energy is strong, so use it to your advantage.”

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

Our show music is from Shana Falana!

#143 Beth Bengtson is Working for Women

Beth Bengtson believes that real change happens when business talent supports non-profit missions, when women achieve economic independence, and personal passion meets organizational focus! She started WorkingForWomen (W4W) to provide a new operating structure that taps into all these pillars.

She learned the power of purpose-driven business practices through years of education and professional experience. She has an MBA from Schiller International University in Paris, France, and a BS in management from Penn State University; and is certified in empowerment design and facilitation through the Empowerment Institute. She has spent 20 years in leadership roles on the agency side and in-house at organizations large and small, facilitating change through communications internally and externally. Her focus is on helping organizations evolve and be purpose-driven.

Her work is strengthened by an energetic family – two adolescent boys, two dogs, and her husband – biking, hiking, skiing, and kayaking. Any remaining free time is spent with friends or alone in nature.

Beth says the key to success is taking baby steps toward your goals each day.

Today we talk about how she’s fared personally during the pandemic, the state of women’s issues/work and funding, what she’s up to at W4W and taking care of our shared outdoor spaces. You can learn more about and make a donation to the Wallkill Valley Land Trust here.

#132 Talking Socially Distanced Yoga with Juliana Machado, Jacquelyn Nash and Carisa Borrello

Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers…

Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and “Life of a Yogi” 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the “house of no judgement” where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.

Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn’s classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn’s approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.

Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly’s 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of  Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts – bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.

Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa’s sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.

Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.

#131 Maggie Noe and Marine Nimblette from “Businesses United in Diversity”

Today I get to chat with Maggie Noe and Marine Nimblette who earlier this summer began collaborating on Businesses United in Diversity and will be having their first event this Saturday in Uptown Kingston at the DMV lot.

Maggie Noe, an undergrad double-majoring in International Area Studies and Business at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. An alumna of Kingston High School and resident of Woodstock, NY, Maggie has been connected to the community for her whole life, and is now finding a way to give back by hosting a COVID-19 relief event that recognizes the disproportionate negative impact COVID has had on minority businesses.

She was inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests in Kingston, seeing young leaders take charge got her thinking: “How, in my own way, can I give back to my community?” After rolling through ideas like running for mayor, she came about the idea of a food truck festival where all proceeds would be donated to Black Lives Matter charities. She called Marine with this idea, and thank goodness she did. Together, they made an undeveloped idea for a food truck festival into an diversity-centered business event to stimulate economic growth in the community.

Marine Nimblette is an undergraduate student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She is a Cell and Molecular Biology major planning on applying to medical school. She has a passion for helping people and wants to have a positive effect on this world. As an alumna of Kingston High School and a child of immigrant parents, she has always felt that the Hudson Valley has a strong sense of community. She believes that during this time it is more important than ever to unify and strengthen our community’s resources by uplifting the members who have been neglected: minority groups. As a minority, she has experienced the hurdles that come with trying to be successful in a majority-white community and hopes to help alleviate this struggle for others by giving minority businesses an opportunity to showcase themselves.

Businesses United in Diversity’s Mission: It is a known reality that minority businesses are subject to a lack of managerial and industrial resources, discriminatory lending practices, and an absence of community support. COVID-19 made this reality even more consequential: black-owned and minority-owned businesses have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. COVID-19 has impacted businesses of all types significantly over the past few months by limiting foot traffic to a near-complete halt, restricting household incomes, and creating a fear of being surrounded by others that will last for years to come.

For these combined reasons, our mission is to help counteract the systemic hurdles and effects of COVID-19 that minority business owners (with an emphasis on black owners given the societal circumstances) have faced in the Hudson Valley. We want to host an event that will allow businesses to showcase their services and be exposed to a higher volume of consumers while practicing social distancing. Given that the removal of systemic hurdles minority owners face is encompassed in the mission of black lives matter, to represent the united support of the BLM movement by Ulster County we will be donating proceeds to local BLM charities.

Today we chat about how and why they put together this event, plus get into the personal and discuss college, COVID and self care.

Today’s show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.org

We also heard music from Shana Falana (“Go Higher” plus all show music) and Nubya Garcia (“Fly Free“)

#120 MK Burnell “More Music Podcast: Quarantine Beat”

Still in quarantine, still making it happen!

Today’s guest is MK Burnell, host of the brand new podcast More Music Please: Quarantine Beat, where she chats with music industry professionals about life during COVID… and whatever else comes up. Until the pandemic shook things up, she was a radio host and music director with a particular passion for supporting local and emerging artists. She lives outside of Kingston with her partner and dogs. When not in lockdown, she performs with bands Locofreeq, Uncledad and Cold Flavor Repair.

We check in about how she’s doing during the pandemic, how she got through being let go from her radio host gig mid quarantine, starting a podcast, some of her favorite musicians like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, making music with her bands, mindfulness and hiking. So good.

We listened to a favorite song of MK’s, “13 Beaches” by Lana Del Rey.

#119 Shannon Donnell “NYC Nurse on the Frontline”

The one and only, Shannon Donnell is my very special guest today. Shannon is a nurse on the front lines in NYC right now, but she had three days off last week and graciously gave me some of that time for an interview to hear how things are going for her out there. You may know Shannon from her years of running the clinic for the O+ Festival She’s a multitalented musician, vocalist and big-hearted, brave nurse making a huge difference in people’s lives!

Shannon walks us through becoming a nurse, the various iterations of roles she’s taken on as a hospice nurse and travel nurse up to her current role on the front lines during this pandemic. She indulges my curiosity around lung health and explains the term of the day, pulmonary toileting. Yep! And Shannon agrees, “our lungs are amazing!” She gives us a little tutorial on breathing for good lung health and shares her recommendations for reopening, hint…think like a nurse and wash your hands. Of course we get a little philosophical, talk about self care, the state of the healthcare system, a new economy, and gush over our mutual adoration for Jim James of My Morning Jacket.

Thank you Shannon! We’re thinking of YOU!!!

Here’s O+’s Facebook Page where you can find more information about the Loving Kindness Meditations which will likely be happening on Fridays going forward. I’m subbing this Friday! 2pm Eastern. Here’s the Zoom link to join. The Mental Health Hotline can be found on their website here.

Here’s my article of the oft referenced, “Epic Elimination Diet

To all the podcast listeners who want to cry with the songs, here you go!

“Look at You” by My Morning Jacket

In the infinitely wise words of Jim James from “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)“:

“I’m going where there ain’t no fear
I’m going where the spirit is near
I’m going where the living is easy
And the people are kind
A new state of mind

I’m going where the ain’t no police
I’m going there ain’t no disease
I’m going where there ain’t no need
To escape from what is
Only spirits at ease”

#117 “Surviving COVID with Girlfriends” with Jen Donovan, Ilissa Viviani, Michelle Renar, Kristen Uhl and Nellie Hill

Today I catch up with 5 women whose work and lives have been affected by the global pause. They share where they are at both personally and professionally, what’s been a challenge, what’s changed for the better or the worse, how they envision going back to work, what they’re grateful for, what they miss, and how they’ve leaned on each other to get through it all. Thanks for joining ladies! I hope y’all get to hug each other soon too!

Jennifer Donovan is back for a COVID catch up. Founder of Le Shag a full service hair and beauty salon based out of Kingston, NY. Jen has continuously evolved and innovated her business model to expand into Glo Spa, the Le Shag Capsule soon to be opening into Stone Ridge, Le Shag Weddings, Le Shag Academy and the Hudson Valley Beauty Collective. Today, she’s gathered some of her gal pals to talk with me about life during quarantine and after juggling the business pivots, childcare and loan paperwork, Jen is looking forward to a real vacation once this is over.

Ilissa Viviani, Le Shag Salon Coordinator, is currently working from home and fielding the numerous calls by clients eagerly awaiting their hair appointments. Le Shag has been offering color kits and Zoom consults in order to temporarily support their clients patiently awaiting their re-opening. She is also excitingly going to be partnering on the new Le Shag Capsule in Stone Ridge. Seven months pregnant, Ilissa has enjoyed the slowing down and connecting with local Kelder Farms for her fresh local veggies each week.

Michelle Renar, Owner of Hudson Valley Body Works, opened her small private practice in the historic stockade district of uptown Kingston in 2004. Prior to that Michelle interned at the Caprini Pain Treatment Center and the Ronald McDonald House in Manhattan and helped facilitate the first massage therapy program for the Kingston Hospital, working for 4 years in the hospital setting providing massage therapy for OB patients.
