316 Women’s History Month with Marielena Ferrer

During this month’s installment of Spirituality and Politics, Marielena and I are talking about the important women in our lives. This leads to a conversation about women’s role as caretaker and the feminist movement and a slight rant about the patriarchy. Sorry, can’t help myself sometimes.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

Our show music is from Shana Falana!

312 Political Parties with Marielena Ferrer

This month’s installment of Spirituality and Politics dives into the subject of political parties. Are they still useful or not? Do we actually need them? Are they causing more harm than good? These are the questions Marielena and I wander through on the show with a little help from this article by Katherine Ellison. She’s pro political party with lots of reform, and I am feeling pessimistic and say they’ve got to go! What do you think??? Here are some more thoughts on the subject.

307 Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer “Preparing for 2024”

Getting prepared spiritually, politically and mentally for 2024! Using a planner, scheduling life, color coding, scheduling emotions, the conscious bath, receiving, prioiritizing, consciously choosing what makes up your life. It’s an election year, a year 8 and in the Major Arcana, the 8 is The Strength or The Justice, depending upon which structure you use. What does this mean for us? Also, Chinese Astrology – getting amped for the Power Crone phase, plus this week’s New Moon!

304 Spirituality and Politics “Resolving Conflict and Learning”

Today Marielena and I wander through various subjects related to Politics and Spirituality… Starting with Pablo Helguera’s Método de Discursos Sociales. How do you resolve conflict? Start with naming the problem to make sure you actually understand it.

This meanders over to my curiosities about Marina Abromovic’s Rhythm Series (’73-’74), and themes of the sword, and power over others…

Here’s the Article; Education: Why not a race to the top? – that inspires us to think about how to chance education to one focusing on learning to learn, learning to do, learning to live together, learning to be.

What does this bring up? Fear of failure and criticism…Are we all born with resilience? This is a subject for next year… who wants to join in?

Final words from Marielena and Theresa on the end of the year…Marielena suggests some solstice writing on your wishes… and how you can take steps to fulfillment.

300 Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer “Open Mindedness”

It’s Politics and Spirituality with Theresa and Marielena Ferrer. This month we’re talking about open mindedness inspired by this NPR article on the same subject. Here’s the Implicit Association Test that was mentioned during our conversation. Prior to jumping into this subject we do revisit the subject of money following up from my conversation with Beth Bengtson from Working for Women about their screening of the film $AVVY.

Happy New Moon! Here’s the report I read from that was very much aligned with our conversation about open mindedness.

286 Marielena Ferrer and Elinor Levy on Folk Arts

Today Marielena Ferrer covers for Theresa and welcomes guest Elinor Levy or Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor Levy joined Arts-Mid Hudson in September 2016 as the Folk Arts Program manager. A native of Oakland, California, she has bounced around the country from California to Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now New York. Previously, she worked in Las Vegas as the folklorist for Clark County Parks and Recreation and as executive director of the Northwest Jersey Folklife Project. Having spent the last decade as a folklorist consultant and an adjunct professor, she is excited to be doing public folklore again especially in the culturally rich Hudson Valley. She has a master’s degree in Anthropology from California State University, Sacramento and a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is a folk artist in her own right as a third generation knitter on her mother’s side. In the past three years she has added spinning her own yarn to her skills and looks forward each year to helping a friend shear a small flock of Jacob sheep.

We discuss being a folklorist, the art of observing, participatory research, Cultural Humility, the activities at the Broadway Bubble in Kingston – not your average laundromat, and all the work Elinor oversees and shepherds at Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor can be reached at elevy@artsmidhudson.org.

282 Affirmative Action and Center for Photography’s Sarrah Danziger

Marielena Ferrer is driving this month’s Spirituality and Politics conversation while I am away from the station. We talk about the Supreme Court’s most recent ruling affecting affirmative action and refer to these articles as we meander through our own opinions on it and what we hope will come as a result of it.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/corinnelestch/2023/07/09/how-the-end-of-affirmative-action-reroutes-the-talent-pipeline/

Midway through we are joined by Sarrah Danziger, Education Coordinator at the Center for Photography in Kingston. Sarrah is a photographer, video artist, educator, and master printer. Danziger received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She created, “Listen to New Orleans,” an oral history archive, artist book, and long-term public installation, and has exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; and at the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Danziger was raised in Woodstock, and now lives and works in Kingston. Her work as an artist and educator focuses on community-based activities and individual storytelling, positioning her well to expand collaborative partnerships and art making programs in the community.

The center offers many ways of connecting with photography and creative imagery including their upcoming Kingston Photo Festival, July 21-23. Lots of cool ways to join in the fun from film screenings to workshops. Check out their website for all the details.

278 Belonging with Marielena Ferrer and Phyllis Hjorth

This month’s Spirituality and Politics show with Marielena Ferrer has us talking about belonging. Inspired by the content of this article, Marielena and I talk about what it means to belong, both in our own lives and as it relates to immigrants who struggle to belong at the most fundamental level. In the second half of the show we are joined by Phyllis Hjorth an artist with an exhibit, “The Neighborhood” now showing at the gallery at the Old Dutch Church, 272 Wall Street, Kingston on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-3 and by appointment. Phyllis’s exhibit will showcase paintings done circa 2000 when she had her studio in Hudson, NY. There she met the neighbors who she would take photos of and eventually paint. She shares the richness of the experience and what she hopes to inspire by the showing of these impressive paintings from that time. The exhibit is open until July 27th with an artists reception on July 1st from 2-4pm.

273 “Until Justice Just Is” with Isis Benitez and Marielena Ferrer

This month on Spirituality and Politics, Marielena and I are joined by Isis Benitez, Lead Director of Communications, Advocacy and Outreach at the YWCA Ulster County. Isis shares the details behind the “Until Justice Just Is” campaign that is underway this week in Kingston and Poughkeepsie featuring film screenings and rallies with speakers all intended to help folks understand the impacts of racism and what we can do to put an end to it. Not only is this campaign creating a safe space for people to talk about racism and its painful effects, but it is also a place to learn more about what you can do to help combat it. Isis is also interested in understanding where the community is as it relates to racism and how we can work together to ends its insidious nature. Because it’s mental health awareness month, we spend some time talking about the impacts racism and bullying have on mental health. You can reach Isis at ibenitez@ywcaulstercounty.org.
