#193 Marielena Ferrer “Politics and Spirituality and the Downsides of Empathy”

Welcome to another installment of our monthly excursion into Politics and Spirituality with Marielena Ferrer, a socially engaged visual artist and art educator. She serves on the Kingston Arts Commission and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Task Force. Ferrer studied architecture at Central University of Venezuela and later earned a certificate of distinction in “Leadership and Empowerment” from Spain’s Polytechnic University of Valencia and a diploma in “Gender Leadership” through the EQUAL Transnational Cooperation Community Initiative of the European Social Fund. In addition, she earned a University Expert Diploma in “Mental Health, Cultural Processes and Psychological Interventions With Immigrants, Minorities and the Socially Excluded” from the University of Barcelona. Ferrer is currently completing a BFA in sculpture from SUNY New Paltz makes art to “assist people in becoming aware of themselves and their environment as fully as possible.”

On the second Mo(o)nday of the month we get together to discuss subjects related to or inspired by the Art of Living and the Art of Living together, two themes from the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which Marielena contributed to 10 years ago while living in Spain. This month we continue our conversation on what it means to be “in community” inspired by Marielena’s recent O+ Festival participatory art exhibit. She also shares her perspective on Indigenous People’s Day which interesting to me is celebrated in different ways and under different names in other countries around the world. We were inspired by this article about the downsides of empathy and finish up the show exploring some of it’s main themes. We’d love to hear what you think!

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston.

#189 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moon-Day of the month and the return of Marielena Ferrer! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and we’re using that book to seed conversations relating to spirituality and politics. Marielena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. Marielena is also an artist and will be participating in this weekend’s Art Walk Kingston at The D.R.A.W. as well as the O+ Festival, Oct. 8-10.

As a reminder or for those just tuning into these conversations, the book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we talk about power, money, privilege, and influence via the topics addressed in the New Yorker article, “Life After White Collar Crime,” which excellently address the addictive nature of money and influence, how and why white collar crime has been policed (or not), and the overall lack of ethical and moral boundaries in business and finance circles. What happened to valuing ethics?!?!? Let us know what you think. We’ll certainly be returning to these themes as we move through more of the subjects covered in Espiritualidad y Politica.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston.

#184 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena.

The second Monday of the month is inspired by the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which was published 10 years ago, of which Mariaelena was a contributor. She is also the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission.

Today, we veer ever so slightly away from the book and into the realm of capitalism in spirituality, group think, cancel culture, tolerance, and the writing/re-writing of history. For background, we refer to this Vice article about Guru Jagat as well as this TIME article of Anthony Fanone’s story from the January 6th insurrection. How will this history be remembered?

#180 Spirituality, Politics and Gun Culture with Marielena Ferrer

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena and special guest Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa.

You can connect with her on Instagram here.

Today, we veer ever so slightly away from the book and into the realm of gun culture and politics. We were inspired by this article about over 180 gun deaths over the 4th of July weekend, and refer to this article about guns and play. We dive into a bit of what it means for children and boys specifically to “play” with “toy” guns. Is it a part of developing as “boys” and having power over one another? Is this a necessary part of development? What is gun culture and can we change it in America? Would love to know what you think!

Send us any and all thoughts, we love to hear them.

#176 Mariaelena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics”

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena.

Today, we veer ever so slightly away from the book and into the realm of taxes and billionaires, inspired by the recent Propublica Article revealing how little they pay in proportion to their wealth. In addition to the article, our conversation is also inspired by the documentary film Saving Capitalism based on the book by Robert Reich.

Send us any and all thoughts, we love to hear them. Thank you to Anthony for sharing his thoughts from our May conversation!

#171 Marielena Ferrer-Harrington “Spirituality and Politics”

It’s the second Moonday of the month and that means, the return of Marielena Ferrer-Harrington! She was a contributor to the book Espiritualidad y Politica which was published 10 years ago, and she feels it’s time to start revisiting these subjects from today’s lens. Mariaelena is the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission. You can listen to her previous interview from September of 2020 where we speak more about her life and her work, and here’s our first conversation about Spirituality and Politics.

The book contains essays from internationally recognized authors including Ken Wilber, Ervin Laszlo, and Tariq Ramadan as well as Spanish-speaking pundits such as Jordi Pigem and Vicente Merlo, “Espiritualidad y politica” offers global and local proposals for integrating a spiritual dimension in the political sphere and, concurrently, for infusing current spiritual movements with a practical component. Society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life are among the topics discussed in depth and with an actionable focus. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace.

Today we continue and expand upon the history and meaning of politics and spirituality, how they are related, why there connection is important and also Marielena explains how the Tarot is an important tool for her in understanding this subject as seen through the lens of the archetypes of the Major Arcana. We’d love for you to join in this conversation as it’s meant to support all of us through a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another.

#145 Perla Ayora and Martha Preve Ayora of “No me Digas!”

Today I get to speak with two creative latinas, Perla and Martha. They’ve collaborated together on several projects including this short, OFF OFF OFF OFF Broadway, and their new radio show “No me Digas” on Radio Kingston.

Martha Lorena Preve Ayora @martha_preve one half of the dynamic duo behind No Me Digas on Radio Kingston. She is a Mexican theater and film actress, writer, director and producer. She is the co-founder of Something from Abroad  @somethingfromabroad an Indie theater company based in NYC. Originally from the Yucatan Peninsula, Martha loves creating art that mixes English and Spanish and combines her Mexican traditions and culture with American characters. Martha has also been working as a Stage Manager OFF BROADWAY. In her free time, she enjoys reading, going to the beach and watching as much dark comedy as she can!

Perla’s back! As the other half of the creative team behind “No Me Digas” on @radiokingstonny and frequent collaborator with her cuz Martha, she’s been busy since February when she was last on the show to talk about her stand up comedy. Soooo much has happened, or not happened since then, but cleary Perla’s making the most of it while stand-up is on hold. As a stand-up comedian @perla_ayora enjoys writing songs, poems, essays, and… jokes. As a member of the Radio Kingston tech team, if you’ve ever been to one of their supported events, you’ve likely seen her dancing between wires, framing cameras, or setting up a stage with complex technical sound design. Originally from Yucatan, Mexico, Perla now lives in Kingston with her hubby and two children.

No me Digas” Is a bilingual show about top news and contemporary events, hosted by two latina comedy writers, Martha Preve Ayora and me, Perla Ayora. We will make you think and laugh at the same time. It’s fun and informative, informativo y divertido. Irreverent and unapologetic, sorry, maybe just irreverent. This show will promise to exceed your expectations as long as they are very low. Tune in and if you support diversity share this show with the people you like, if not, share it with the people you don’t like. There is a lot of division in this world, we hope at least we can laugh together. It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Spanish, you will end up yelling “¡No Me Digas!”

Here’s the collage class I was talking about with past guest Mel Toth.

Here’s the article I referenced on 3-Minute Commitments!

#139 Helen Zuman “Mating in Captivity”

After some short technical difficulties, I finally connected with today’s guest, Helen Zuman, a tree-hugging dirt worshipper devoted to turning waste into food and the stinky guck of experience into fertile, fragrant prose. She holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard and a Half-FA in memoir from Hunter College. Raised in Brooklyn, she lives with her husband in Beacon, NY and Black Mountain, NC.

She is the author of Mating in Captivity (She Writes Press 2018), a memoir of her five years, post-Harvard, in a cult with a radical take on sex and relationships. Mating in Captivity received a starred review from Kirkus, was named a Kirkus Best Indie Memoir of 2018, was a finalist in Creative Nonfiction for the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses’ 2019 Firecracker Award, and was both first runner-up in memoir and a finalist for First Horizon and Grand Prize honors in the 2020 Eric Hoffer Awards. Other work has appeared in The New Farmers Almanac, in Communities and Livelihood magazines, and on the Foundation for Intentional Community’s website (ic.org).

Mating in Captivity: When recent Harvard grad Helen Zuman moved to Zendik Farm in 1999, she was thrilled to discover that the Zendiks used go-betweens to arrange sexual assignations, or “dates,” in cozy shacks just big enough for a double bed and a nightstand. Here, it seemed, she could learn an honest version of the mating dance – and form a union free of “Deathculture” lies. No one spoke the truth: Arol, the Farm’s matriarch, crushed any love that threatened her hold on her followers’ hearts. An intimate look at a transformative cult journey, Mating in Captivity shows how stories can trap us and free us, how miracles rise out of crisis, how coercion feeds on forsaken self-trust.

In addition to cults, we also talk about the journey to trust oneself, the “infinite growth myth,” gift circles, her connection to a well balanced eco-village that is doing intentional living well and how she takes care of herself (no social media!). I can personally highly recommend her book even for those not remotely curious about how one gets pulled into a cult. It’s extremely well written and uniquely empowering to hear some of the more difficult details of her story.

Looking for an intentional community or wondering about the health of one you’re currently in? Helen’s article may be of help to you. And if you do have friends, family or loved ones you fear are wrapped up in a cult, eh hm, political party, then Helen recommends some resources written by therapist and cult expert Steven Hassan. You can tune in to hear the best thing Helen’s Mom did easing her exit from the cult mind-control.
