Holly Troy is an artist, writer, teacher and musician, whose work explores forms for “deep play.” Her passion is to create positive transformation through imagination, movement, pranayama, co-creation, and playful embodiment.

Holly envisions a world where people have the tools and resources to be their authentic selves as conscious creators contributing to a renaissance of human potential that uplifts all of humanity and every being on the planet.

Holly came of age as a musician on the Lower East Side, New York City in the 80s and 90s. She earned her yoga teaching certificate from Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in 1996. She holds a degree in Creative Writing and Studio Art from Hunter College. Her painting has been the subject of solo shows in the USA and is held in private collections across the US, Europe and Australia. She is based in upstate New York.

You should also know that she hails from an illustrious lineage of fortune tellers, yogis, folk healers, troubadours and poets of the fine and mystical arts. Shape-shifting Tantric Siren of the Lunar Mysteries, she surfs the ebbs and flows of the multiverse on the Pure Sound of Creation. Her alchemy is Sacred Folly — revolutionary transformation through Love, deep play, Beauty, and music.

She believes creativity, love, kindness, radical authenticity, and self-care are imperative for a just and sustainable world.

She’s leading a workshop this weekend, I am Divine Love,  as a part of the O+ Festival on Sunday, at the Good Work Institute at 4:30pm.

Today Holly shared the background in developing this workshop and what to expect. We talk about the themes of Love, true self, play, fun, and presence, and Holly shares about her lineage and how she became who she is now, someone who is forever exploring and choosing to see the world through love and play.

Today on the show I get to chat with Amber Rubarth! Amber left home at 17 years old to become a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada.  At 21, she quit and decided to begin writing songs and teaching herself guitar.  One of her early originals was awarded Grand Prize in NPR’s Mountain Stage New Song contest.  She has performed hundreds of stages around the world, from the early days opening for a flea circus at a Texas theme park, to performing an original duet with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall, to full orchestral arrangements of her songs with the Ithaca Chamber Orchestra woven into classical works.  She moves fluidly between genres, creating a unique palette of instrumentation for what best serves the song.

After many years of solo touring, Amber lights up these days with collaborations in both film and music.  She has written original songs and score for numerous films including Sundance festival winner ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work’ and the super-marathon documentary ‘Desert Runners.’   She co-founded ‘The Paper Raincoat,’ a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney’s ‘The Last Song,’ the CW’s ‘One Tree Hill,’ and Paste Magazine who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio ‘Applewood Road’ which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it “a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year” which led to performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the ‘BBC Sisters in Country’ documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.

Her most recent album, Cover Crop, is 15 reinterpreted songs exploring the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature. Self-produced and performed by Amber Rubarth in the woods of the Hudson Valley, New York.

Today Amber shares with us how she went from chainsaw sculpture to musician, what’s different about her musical work then and now, how she takes care of herself (with her Matcha ritual), why and how she made the Cover Crop album, and plays a few songs for us too!

NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She’s always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.

NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and  unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets.

When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee’s daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She’s never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.

On today’s show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that’s impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.

Sheila Dvorak Galione is a writer, artist, singer, mother, healer, and intuitive coach who seeks to bring her insight and passion for the power of story to every aspect of her work. For years, Sheila supported non-profit and community organizations through grant writing and other responsibilities, but she stepped into the void to first process the passing of her sister and then clear the way for her to pursue her own work that allowed her a greater balance between work, motherhood and her health. She created Painted Pathways, a healing practice combining artistic expression, reflection, and conversation. Throughout the process, she assists others in creating a visual representation of your life, allowing you to see your strengths more clearly, and identify where you can visualize growth and change. When she’s not doing this work, she’s directing school plays, writing music, and performing as Sheila Dee with the band Sheila & The Deep End.

The band formed in 2014 and quickly grew from performing originals and covers during dinner theater shows, to opening sets for rockabilly band Lara Hope and the Ark-tones, to headlining historic venues and clubs around the Hudson Valley, including the Rosendale Theater and Live at The Falcon, among others. She writes and performs original, evocative, old-school rock-n-roll, and her debut album “Has to Be Real” is available on all streaming platforms and features melodies that take hold in the heart, funk that moves your feet and dynamic harmonies that fill your ears.

During our conversation, Sheila eloquently and authentically shares her life with us, from growing up in a musical family, to being disillusioned by Hollywood after a stint with a reality show and moving to the Hudson Valley where she reconnects with her love of music. She openly shares about the unexpected loss of her sister and how she continues to move through the grief of it all including writing music with her in mind. Today on the show I get to chat with Francesca Hoffman, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, event producer and entrepreneur based in Kingston, who is currently in the process of opening her new queer-forward performance venue & bar called Unicorn Bar (formerly The Beverly Lounge).

 

A classically trained flutist and self-taught guitarist, ukulele player and percussionist, she is also a co-founder of Hudson Valley-based brass band, Brasskill and the Hudson Valley Brassroots Festival, a member of both The Goddess Party and Eva Salina’s Eastern European choir, and the parade coordinator for the O+ Festival.

Francesca talks about how music entered her life, and how her relationship with it has evolved including how it has impacted her own personal evolution… finding her confidence, surrendering, letting go of control, and taking care of herself.

Catch her performing her original songs live with support from pianist/accordionist Meghan Quinn on Dec. 17 at @vosburghbrewing and Jan. 5 at Tilda’s…and with the Eastern European Choir on Dec. 9th.

Today I welcome Suz Slezak, mother and musician, to the show. For Suz harmonizing with another human being is a sacred act of sharing breath. This lifelong love of harmony is how she, as if by accident, fell into music as a career. Suz grew up TV-free on her family’s Virginia homestead, in an endless loop of fiddle-playing and singing led by her father, a Catholic seminary dropout, as she, her brothers and a gaggle of fellow homeschoolers traversed gravel roads in their beat-up station wagon en route to choir rehearsals and music lessons.

While not on a path to pursue music, it seemed to be following her. Convinced by her now-husband to join his band, the two eventually fell in love and for the past fifteen years have co-fronted David Wax Museum – earning accolades from the New York Times to NPR, performing on CBS Saturday Morning, and even playing Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s wedding.

After years touring and co-fronting the band, Suz’s debut solo album, Our Wings May Be Featherless, comes out March 4th. It is a breathtaking journey through some of her life’s most painful and poignant moments – losing a best friend to suicide, her public struggle with bipolar disorder, and a traumatic childbirth. Today we listen to a few of the new songs and hear about the stories behind them.

Today I have the ultimate honor to share my conversation with June Millington, a Filipino American guitarist, songwriter, producer, educator, actress and writer. She was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the all-female rock band Fanny, which was active from 1970 to 1974. After leaving the band, June went in pursuit of her spiritual path, continued to make music, collaborate, act, write and is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) aka the “Magical Queendom” in Goshen, Massachusetts.

The Institute for the Musical Arts was co-founded with partner Ann Hackler in Northern California in 1986 and received its nonprofit status in 1987.  It operated its studio and programs from Bodega, California’s historic Old Creamery until 2001 when property was purchased in Western Massachusetts for a permanent facility. The institute’s nonprofit mission is to support women and girls in music and music-related businesses.  Rooted in the legacy of progressive equal rights movements, IMA’s development is guided by the visions, needs and concerns of women from a diversity of backgrounds and has grown from the need to nourish ourselves and each other. In addition to its summer programs for girls, IMA offers concerts and workshops year-round in support of its nonprofit mission which, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.

Today June shares about how they are supporting girls at IMA, leaving Fanny, feminism, foremothers, Buddhism, cancer, life lessons and what’s she’s got on the horizon.

Jayla Kai grew up in Woodstock, a town synonymous with the pureness of music. It evokes a togetherness where the community has each other’s back and the culture is almost symptomatic of its people (Dylan, Bowie, Van Morrison, Levon Helm). Kai cites a handful of local musicians who have served as key mentors to her. Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), is one of these key mentors who has inspired and encouraged her. Kai’s Debut EP, Epitome, is out now following the release of her crunching single Apple Tree and Kai’s introductory track, I Can’t Lie. As far as opening bows go, Epitome EP is as confident as you’ll hear. It’s the sound of an artist quickly in-tune with her writing and finding a distinct voice that is completely her own. Ella Ray is a Kingston NY-based performer who completed her debut full-length album, Hum to Your Heart, released in August of 2019. Her self-generated genre blends her background in Eastern European acapella arrangements with the beauty of Cat Power and the heartache of Mazzy Star. Her preternatural voice sings over innovative acoustic chord structure as she details her romantic and sexual trials with painful memories of her past, vocalizing a strength which is tangible in her transformative music.

Also joining today’s conversation is Ella’s biggest fan and partner, Jesse Scherer, massage therapist and super volunteer who supports organizations like the O+ Festival and Health Care is a Human Right.

Today we talked about Ella’s creative process and stepping into her own as a solo musician, healing, Jesse’s thoughts on volunteering, love, heartache, relationships, and surviving COVID.
