Taína Asili, a dynamic New York-based Puerto Rican singer, composer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator carrying on the tradition of her ancestors, fusing past and present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice. She is celebrated by NPR, Rolling Stone, and Billboard for her soulful, genre-blending music echoing calls for love and liberation. With powerful vocals and a multi-genre fusion traversing salsa, rock, reggaeton, Afrobeat, and other global sounds, Asili’s music is both unique and deeply rooted. Accompanied by her brilliant ensemble, she delivers energetic performances at diverse venues nationwide – from iconic stages such as Carnegie Hall with Toshi Reagon, to renowned festivals like the main stage of San Francisco Pride, to historic events like The Women’s March on Washington, to numerous colleges and conferences – inspiring audiences to dance to the heartbeat of social change.

She joins us on the show to share about the inspiration and motivation for her upcoming 150 mile walk from Albany to NYC for Climate Justice. She’ll be arriving in Kingston on Sept. 16th, walking through the Sojourner Truth State Park, and stopping at the Kingston Point Beach at approximately [3:30] PM for a song offering. She’ll likely arrive in the park around [2:30] if you want to join in the walk to the beach. The next day, on Sept. 17th they will perform their new climate justice multimedia show Fever Pitch at Unicorn Bar. Then on the morning of the 18th they’ll be at the Red Fox Ravine in Kingston for a song offering and continuing on their walk to New Paltz.

Midway through the journey, she will sail from Newburgh to Haverstraw (9/21) aboard the historic Clearwater. The pilgrimage will then continue on foot into New York City, culminating during New York Climate Week with a final performance of the walk at UPROSE in Brooklyn (9/26).

The Fever Pitch Pilgrimage is supported by a growing list of sponsors and partners including grassroots organizations, artists, and community leaders. A GoFundMe campaign and sponsorship drive are currently underway to support artist fees, accommodations, and free/sliding scale performances throughout the route.

Cornelia Murr is a British-American singer-songwriter. She released her debut album, Lake Tear of the Clouds, in 2018, followed by the EP Corridor in 2022. Her music blends elements of folk, dream-pop, and psychedelic pop, often characterized by ethereal vocals and introspective lyrics. In February 2025, Cornelia released her second full-length album, Run to the Center. The album was produced by singer-songwriter Luke Temple and marked a shift toward a more expansive, confident sound described as “hypnotic pop.”  She’s playing Tubby’s in Kingston this Friday, June 6th!

Today, Cornelia shares about her start as a musician and songwriter and gives us a glimpse into how she birthed her music and the meaning behind select songs that we listen to together. Serendipity and flow seem to guide her through life whether it’s her musical collaborations or the rebuilding of an historic home in Red Cloud, Nebraska — the teeny but famous hometown of Willa Cather. Cornelia keeps the conversation real by touching on the burden and fleeting nature of female beauty, the lessons in her romantic misses, and her enthusiastic relationship to astrology. Kelli Scarr is an American singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Kingston, NY. She is also the founder of Vera Jean Music, a pioneering record label dedicated to championing the talents of women artists over the age of 40.

On May 12, 2025, she unveils Greater Mysteries, an immersive album and performance experience inspired by the ancient myth of Inanna. Born from a 2022 artist residency in Crete, and recorded in Iceland, the album invites listeners to connect with their own cycles of transformation. Transcendent piano and airy woodwinds intertwine with Scarr’s otherworldly voice and the earthy pulse of the rhythm section, alongside contributions from an array of surprise musicians—creating a soundscape steeped in myth and mystery.

Raised in Northern California, Scarr’s musical journey began in church, eventually leading her to Berklee College of Music before settling in New York City. Over the years, she has woven her way through an eclectic range of projects, from fronting the bands Moonraker and Salt & Samovar to a significant collaboration writing, recording, and touring with Moby. Her artistry extends into film scoring, where her emotive and organic approach—favoring live musicians and improvisation—has set her apart. She earned an Emmy nomination for her score to the HBO documentary In A Dream (2008) and has composed music for dozens of films, TV shows, and commercials. Notable projects include the documentaries Advanced Style and Far Western, and the forthcoming After All (2025), for which she composed the score and contributed six original songs.

As a solo artist, Scarr has released three albums—Piece (2010), Dangling Teeth (2012), and No Rush (2021)—establishing herself as a singular voice in atmospheric, deeply emotive songwriting. Her forthcoming fourth album, Greater Mysteries, marks a new creative chapter, offering music as an initiatory experience. The project will unfold through intimate preview concerts in the Hudson Valley, culminating in immersive cave performances this fall and beyond.

Today we get to dive deep into Kelli’s creative process in the making of Greater Mysteries from the seeds of inspiration that came from many sources such as Talk Talk by Spirit of Eden, Maureen Murdock’s “The Heroine’s Journey,” and Dr. Catherine Svehla’s mythical wisdom to the whisper from her psychic about Greece in her future. Kelli shares about the magic and mystery of her residency in Crete, how the voices of Odeya Nini and members of the Threshold Choir appeared to lend magic to the album, and we listen to three songs – “Knowing is the Call,” “The Yes that Leads,” and “Aphrodite” – as we meander through the myth of Inanna and how transformation happens to us…”she’s not dying, she’s flying free.”

Hudson Valley audiences will have an exclusive opportunity to preview Greater Mysteries before the rest of the world. On April 16th, Kelli is hosting Lesser Mysteries at Unicorn Bar in Kingston. The special preview event will feature an impressive lineup of local and national talent and offer attendees a unique opportunity to witness the early stages of what will become a larger, Greater Mysteries immersive cave experience scheduled for fall 2025.

Joining me in the first hour of the show is Barbara Bravo, CCE Master Gardener Volunteer and Garden Day Coordinator to talk about “Garden with Confidence” happening on April 5th at SUNY Ulster, Stone Ridge, New York. The Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension are delighted to unveil Garden Day 2025 class offerings that are designed to inspire and equip both novices and experienced gardeners. This year’s range of classes will provide hands on learning experiences, expert guidance, and practical tips to help attendees grow vibrant, sustainable gardens. From tackling garden challenges to enhancing your plant knowledge, these engaging classes will foster a deeper connection to nature and encourage ecological responsibility. This all-day gardening extravaganza, featuring 16 classes is taught by our dedicated Master Gardener Volunteers. Garden Day will take place on April 5, from 8:30 am to 4 pm at SUNY Ulster, Stone Ridge, NY. The day kicks-off with a Keynote Address that will be delivered by Michael Hagen, Curator of the Native Plant Garden and the Rock Garden at the New York Botanical Garden. In Michael’s address, entitled “The Challenges of a Public Native Plant Garden: Maintenance, Interpretation and Compromise” he will explore the New York Botanical Garden’s commitment to highlighting the native flora of northeastern North America, a vision that traces back to its founding Director and its evolution into a completely reimagined and significantly expanded native plant garden. This presentation will address some of the unexpected challenges, evolving maintenance strategies, and key lessons learned over the past decade since the garden’s reopening. In addition to attending the Keynote address, you have the opportunity to choose four enriching classes out of the 16 available options, designed to elevate your gardening skills so that you will Garden with Confidence.

Joining me in the second hour is musician and activist Rebecca Martin. She has shaped a singular career devoted to the beauty and possibility of pure creative discovery. After getting her start as co-founder of the pioneering jazz-pop duo Once Blue, the New York-based singer/songwriter went on to release a series of acclaimed solo albums animated by the quiet force of her captivating vocals, and collaborating along the way with her husband, the jazz bassist Larry Grenadier and luminaries Argentine pianist Guillermo Klein and legendary jazz drummer Paul Motian.

Produced by Rebecca Martin and recorded in Portugal by Mário Barreiros, SHE features 13 original songs that blend voice and acoustic guitar to create a minimalistic yet powerful sound with deep emotional resonance. Exploring themes of identity, transformation, and the passage of time, the album fosters a reflective, meditative space that invites listeners to fully immerse themselves in its introspective atmosphere.

In one of her boldest turns to date, Martin’s new album SHE (Sunnyside Records) marks her first body of work made entirely on her own. Martin graces every moment of SHE with the clarity and character of her distinct vocal phrasing. As revealed throughout her new recording, Martin’s commitment to creating space informs nearly all aspects of her artistry, including everything from the album’s sparse orchestration to her underlying desire to summon a gratifying sense of stillness within all those who listen. Rebecca will be performing songs from the album joined by Clare Manchon and Anthea White on background vocals during the album’s Release Party at The Local on February 28th in Saugerties.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa and now living in upstate NY, Debbie Lan is a Musician, Singer, Choral Director, vocal arranger and award winning songwriter.

Debbie has entertained audiences as a solo artist, with various bands and Playback Theater companies, written 2 musicals which premiered at The Rosendale Theater in Rosendale New York, and has taught music and singing to children 18 months through 8th grade.

Now in its 17th year, Debbie founded, directs and arranges songs for Bloom, a 50 voice ensemble, as well as The B2s, Perennial and The Resisterhood Community Choir.  The ensembles have performed at many local venues singing an eclectic mix of uplifting and joyful songs.

Debbie also founded Songclub, a drop-in singing experience, that builds community community through singing original arrangements of familiar songs in a safe and welcoming environment. The audience is the choir!

Debbie is passionate about building community through facilitating joyful and fulfilling group singing experiences for all voices.

Today she shares her path to the States and how her music career has evolved over the years from singer/songwriter, to member of a band, music teacher, ensemble leader, kids music bandleader and returning again to her singer/songwriter roots. She’s one who follows what inspires her which has served her exceptionally well, finding fulfilling work as well as her role in enriching our community. Holly Troy is an artist, writer, teacher and musician, whose work explores forms for “deep play.” Her passion is to create positive transformation through imagination, movement, pranayama, co-creation, and playful embodiment.

Holly envisions a world where people have the tools and resources to be their authentic selves as conscious creators contributing to a renaissance of human potential that uplifts all of humanity and every being on the planet.

Holly came of age as a musician on the Lower East Side, New York City in the 80s and 90s. She earned her yoga teaching certificate from Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in 1996. She holds a degree in Creative Writing and Studio Art from Hunter College. Her painting has been the subject of solo shows in the USA and is held in private collections across the US, Europe and Australia. She is based in upstate New York.

You should also know that she hails from an illustrious lineage of fortune tellers, yogis, folk healers, troubadours and poets of the fine and mystical arts. Shape-shifting Tantric Siren of the Lunar Mysteries, she surfs the ebbs and flows of the multiverse on the Pure Sound of Creation. Her alchemy is Sacred Folly — revolutionary transformation through Love, deep play, Beauty, and music.

She believes creativity, love, kindness, radical authenticity, and self-care are imperative for a just and sustainable world.

She’s leading a workshop this weekend, I am Divine Love,  as a part of the O+ Festival on Sunday, at the Good Work Institute at 4:30pm.

Today on the show I get to chat with Amber Rubarth! Amber left home at 17 years old to become a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada.  At 21, she quit and decided to begin writing songs and teaching herself guitar.  One of her early originals was awarded Grand Prize in NPR’s Mountain Stage New Song contest.  She has performed hundreds of stages around the world, from the early days opening for a flea circus at a Texas theme park, to performing an original duet with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall, to full orchestral arrangements of her songs with the Ithaca Chamber Orchestra woven into classical works.  She moves fluidly between genres, creating a unique palette of instrumentation for what best serves the song.

After many years of solo touring, Amber lights up these days with collaborations in both film and music.  She has written original songs and score for numerous films including Sundance festival winner ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work’ and the super-marathon documentary ‘Desert Runners.’   She co-founded ‘The Paper Raincoat,’ a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney’s ‘The Last Song,’ the CW’s ‘One Tree Hill,’ and Paste Magazine who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio ‘Applewood Road’ which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it “a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year” which led to performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the ‘BBC Sisters in Country’ documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.

Her most recent album, Cover Crop, is 15 reinterpreted songs exploring the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature. Self-produced and performed by Amber Rubarth in the woods of the Hudson Valley, New York.

Today Amber shares with us how she went from chainsaw sculpture to musician, what’s different about her musical work then and now, how she takes care of herself (with her Matcha ritual), why and how she made the Cover Crop album, and plays a few songs for us too!

NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She’s always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.

NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and  unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets.

When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee’s daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She’s never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.

On today’s show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that’s impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.

Sheila Dvorak Galione is a writer, artist, singer, mother, healer, and intuitive coach who seeks to bring her insight and passion for the power of story to every aspect of her work. For years, Sheila supported non-profit and community organizations through grant writing and other responsibilities, but she stepped into the void to first process the passing of her sister and then clear the way for her to pursue her own work that allowed her a greater balance between work, motherhood and her health. She created Painted Pathways, a healing practice combining artistic expression, reflection, and conversation. Throughout the process, she assists others in creating a visual representation of your life, allowing you to see your strengths more clearly, and identify where you can visualize growth and change. When she’s not doing this work, she’s directing school plays, writing music, and performing as Sheila Dee with the band Sheila & The Deep End.

The band formed in 2014 and quickly grew from performing originals and covers during dinner theater shows, to opening sets for rockabilly band Lara Hope and the Ark-tones, to headlining historic venues and clubs around the Hudson Valley, including the Rosendale Theater and Live at The Falcon, among others. She writes and performs original, evocative, old-school rock-n-roll, and her debut album “Has to Be Real” is available on all streaming platforms and features melodies that take hold in the heart, funk that moves your feet and dynamic harmonies that fill your ears.

During our conversation, Sheila eloquently and authentically shares her life with us, from growing up in a musical family, to being disillusioned by Hollywood after a stint with a reality show and moving to the Hudson Valley where she reconnects with her love of music. She openly shares about the unexpected loss of her sister and how she continues to move through the grief of it all including writing music with her in mind.
