234 “Childfree by Choice” with Therese Shechter and LeNora Faye

It’s the return of Therese Shechter, Founder of Trixie Films, Author, Speaker and Director of the compelling documentary film, My So-Called Selfish Life, and she’s brought with her LeNora Faye, a childfree lifestyle advocate, speaker, and moderator who creates global platforms, both public and private, for people who are choosing not to have, birth, or raise children. She is a co-host of the international podcast and web series, Childfree Girls and a co-founder of Childfree Convention, where she serves as PR manager and co-moderator.

The Childfree Convention is a free, two-day virtual event to connect childfree people all over the world, where childfree people and their allies can expand their knowledge about the childfree lifestyle and explore important topics in the childfree community.

The convention is FREE to watch and open to all who want to be part of the childfree conversation.

The panels will explore topics of interest to the childfree community such as the childfree experience in different world cultures, Pronatalism, Antinatalism, Defining Family, Childfree Guys, Childfree LGBTQ+, Sterilization, Childfree F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence Retire Early), Childfree 60+, and more.

The Childfree Convention is happening July 30-31 and August 1st is International Child Free Day so we’re celebrating with them and sharing their good work with you. Whether you identify as Child Free, Child Less or none of the above, this is an important conversation in changing the narrative on womanhood and disempowering the patriarchy.

218 Trauma or Toxic Masculinity

Today’s show is dedicated to Sexual Assault Awareness Month and an exploration of toxic masculinity. Inspired by the anger displayed at the Oscars and the Grammy awarded to Louis CK, I dig into some questions I have about the source of this behavior and the ways we can work together to prevent it. I share the following talks and words from others who’ve spoken on these subjects including lots of my own thoughts. Would love to hear yours.

215 Marielena Ferrer “War Through the Lens of the Tarot”

Back at it for another round of deep thoughts and wild talks with Mariaelena.

The second Monday of the month is inspired by the book, Espiritualidad y Politica, which was published 10 years ago, of which Mariaelena was a contributor. She is also the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization, Chair of the Athena Network New York — a psychosocial support network in the area of social services, health, and specifically in mental health, for immigrants experiencing psychological challenges related to the migratory process, a board member of the Family of Woodstock, a member of the Arts Mid-Hudson Advisory Board, and Kingston’s City Arts Commission.

March 14th is National Learn About Butterflies Day, and because Marielena has been working on an art installation involving 5000 butterflies, she shares why they are important to her, and a bit about her exhibit, opening May 6th, 2022 at the Dorsky Museum, closing May 8th.

Then we move right along to the biggest news in spirituality and politics today, the invasion of Ukraine. This includes a conversation about compassion inspired by this article. Marielena shares her assessment of the situation through the lens of the Tarot and then shares a meditation for all of us to practice on our own, to meditate on the key cards, the Emperor and the Hierophant, the majors players in what is unfolding at this moment.

Finally, we end the show with a little Moon love, and a share from Tanaaz about this week’s Full Moon Astrology.

208 Inno Powell from “Abundance Farms”

WELCOME TO SEASON 5!!!!! Today I have the privilege of speaking with Inno Powell, Founder of Abundance Farms. “Their mission is to get fresh organic produce into the homes of BIPOC families in and out of Ulster County, NY. There are so many people living in places where food apartheid plays a big part in our communities and we aren’t even aware of it. We started growing out of public and private spaces in Kingston, NY for our first two seasons. By the end of the second season, we had reached about 80 BIPOC families with most of those families being served on a regular basis with a free vegetable share from the farm. We had over 50 volunteers help out this season from the beginning to the end and I honestly think that they are the reason we were able to keep this going because it takes a village in every sense.” They are embarking on a fundraising campaign to continue and expand this good work which is just one of the reasons I was glad Inno said yes to being a guest on the show. You can follow them on Instagram, @wefeedbipocfree and Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/wefeedbipoc.

Today we hear the powerful story of how farming found Inno, or really, returned to Inno, as something that was always deep in their roots, and all about the journey to Abundance Farms and the good work they are doing there. Plus, Inno shares about faith, the “good book,” finding oneself, the other side of incarceration, midwifery, as well as some poetry about being a single mom. It’s a must listen!

Here’s the farm’s website where you can volunteer, join the CSA or donate.

And here’s the petition on midwifery centers in NY State.

205 Nancy Graham and Louisa Finn “Love and Mohonk Consultations”

Nancy Graham serves on the board of Mohonk Consultations and the arts council of The Lace Mill, where they live in Midtown Kingston. They have worked or volunteered for numerous nonprofits related to social justice, alternative media, theatre, film, and writing. Poet/writer/visual artist under the name Nancy O. Graham; actor under the name Noa Graham. Her most recent theatre project was Orchid Receipt Service, starring Asia Kate Dillon, at Theater MITU580 in Brooklyn, pre-pandemic. Most recent film project is a short called Elegy for a Glacier, about an environmental activist and her glaciologist daughter forced to face off about the construction of a ski resort in the Rockies.

Louisa Finn is a  Hudson Valley native, whose mother was a member of the Quaker Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House, and father a Russian Jewish pianist from the Bronx.  She has spent her life thus far actively engaged in learning what it is to be human and to be herself.  She works as a Speech/Language Pathologist and Reading Tutor, and clinical instructor at SUNY New Paltz.  She is on the Board of Mohonk Consultations, where she serves as Administrative Coordinator, and Sky Lake Shambhala Center Buddhist Retreat.  She writes poetry, and is creating a forest garden in her front yard.

Today we’re talking about Love and a myriad of related and thought provoking subjects. Nancy and Louisa share about their first memories of love and how they relate to the word which takes us into the realm of spiritual materialism, caring for others, and being a mother.  The show is inspired by bell hooks and her writings on love and self love/self worth so we dive into self-love as Louisa and Nancy share their own process to love themselves better as well as how self-love relates to caring for others and being a woman. We then leave the personal towards the end of the show to talk about the public and how the work of Mohonk Consultations is cultivating love in its own way, bringing folks together to collaborate, lifting voices, and caring for land and others. We leave you with a call for your own definition or thoughts on Love.  bell hooks herself seemed to have a few, “love is the action we take on behalf of our own or another’s spiritual growth…” “love is a combination of trust, commitment, care, respect, knowledge and responsibility…” So, what say you?

200 Annette Simmons and Areva Martin “Authors and Thought Leaders”

Today the show begins with a conversation with Annette Simmons, a keynote speaker, consultant, and author of four books, including The Story Factor, which is listed in The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. She received a business degree from Louisiana State University, went on to spend ten years in Australia in international business, then received an M.Ed. from North Carolina State University, before founded Group Process Consulting in 1996. Her latest book is titled, Drinking from a Different Well: How Women’s Stories Change What Power Means in Action. Learn more at her book’s website. Today Annette shares her thoughts on the different narrative men and women have around power, how women can come to trust their own instinct, how to resist gaslighting, how women can insist on their own narrative and stick to it, why moral emotions are so important and lots more. I read her book cover to cover in about 1 DAY, so I highly recommend!

In the second half of the show I get to speak with Areva Martin, an award-winning civil rights attorney, advocate, social issues commentator, talk show host, and producer. A CNN legal analyst and Harvard Law School graduate, Martin founded Martin & Martin, LLP, a Los Angeles-based civil rights firm, and is the CEO of Butterflly Health, Inc., a mental health technology company. A best-selling author, Martin has dedicated her fourth book, Awakening: Ladies, Leadership, and the Lies We’ve Been Told, to helping women worldwide recognize, own, and assert their limitless power. Today Areva shares some of her own personal story as it relates to gender inequality, what she’s learned by listening to the stories of other women, the lies that women have been told that have held them back, and how to beat a system that’s (still) rigged against women.

#197 Marielena Ferrer “Spirituality and Politics – Compassion and Anger”

It’s the return of Marielena Ferrer and our monthly conversation inspired by Espiritualidad y Politica, which ponders ideas related to society’s relationship with money, cultural integration, sustainable development, and participation in public life. The overarching message is that it is possible and necessary to marry the art of living (spirituality) with the art of coexisting (politics) to achieve peace. We talk about the practical implications of this and other related topics. Today we discuss how politics has become a team sport, return to our conversation about compassion, and then dip into the point and purpose of anger and how it it seems to be more socially accepted, even revered, if displayed by a man vs. a woman.

Mariaelena is an artist and the Executive Director of Humanamente — a diversity and inclusion consulting organization.

Today’s show was engineered by Nick Panken of Radio Kingston.

#191 Therese Shechter “My So-Called Selfish Life”

On today’s show I share my conversation with Therese Shechter, award-winning filmmaker and writer, and the founder of the feminist production company Trixie Films.  Her work fuses humor, activism, and personal storytelling to disrupt what’s considered most sacred about womanhood. She is a Canada Council for the Arts grantee for her documentary My So-Called Selfish Life which is having its World Premier this week at the Woodstock Film Festival. The film examines what it means to say no to motherhood in a society that assumes all women want children, and exposes what’s at stake when women are denied the right to control their own reproductive lives. It is the third part of a trilogy which includes her films “How To Lose Your Virginity” (2013) and “I Was A Teenage Feminist” (2005). These documentaries have screened from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul to Seoul, and her work is in the collections of over 300 universities, non-profits, and libraries. I had the opportunity of a sneak peak at her film and it’s fascinating, thought provoking, informative and entertaining… and this is coming from someone who has struggled to have children yet is STILL trying!

Woodstock Film Festival Showtimes and Locations:

World Premiere: Thursday, September 30 [4:45] PM at Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NY

Encore Screening: Friday, October 1 [11:00] AM at Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties NY
