294 Sue Silverstream “Yoga, Sound Healing and Kindness”

This week I have the pleasure of sitting down with Sue Silverstream, a Visual Artist, Singer, Musician, Dancer and Yogi/ni who has been practicing and teaching Yoga and the Sound Healing Arts for over 4 decades. She’s been a friend and friendly face who I admire and look up to, and she’s and I will be collaborating in sound this weekend for the O+ Festival. Sue share stories from her life, how she found yoga and sound healing and little nuggets of wisdom about life and how she lives it. I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did! “All my Arts are Healing Arts in the Service of Peace! May All Beings Be Happy, Healthy and Free! May Peace Prevail on Earth!” Sue Silverstream

293 The O+ show with Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price

Today I share my conversation with Kingston High School Art Teachers Amy Purdy, Jenn Brannigan-Tyler and Jessica Price about their students’ participation in the O+ Festival. Amy Purdy is the Lead Art Teacher at the High School and works with the National Art Honor Society and teaches ceramics and jewelry. Jenn Brannigan-Tyler teaches the Advanced Painting art students, and Jessica Price teaches the Digital Photo students. Our conversation touches on their students’ experience in interpreting the festival theme FORWARD and gives us a sneak peek at how we can experience their offerings during the O+ Festival. The painting and photo students will have their work displayed at store fronts in Uptown Kingston, and Amy Purdy and students’ TASK party will be happening on Saturday, October 7th from 3-5pm at the YWCA, 209 Clinton Avenue, Kingston, NY.

Here is the Oliver Herring TASK party info.

In the second half of the show I play music from a few of this year’s O+ Festival musicians. If you’re listening via podcast instead of the radio archive, you’ll have to check them out on the playlist. Here’s today’s playlist.

Here’s your Full Moon Report! “The Aries Full Moon holds fantastic potential for helping us to take our ideas from our minds and into physical form. There is an entrepreneurial flow that comes when Aries energy is strong, so use it to your advantage.”

289 Hope Nemiroff and Sarah Carlson “Breast Cancer Options”

Today I am honored to speak with Hope Nemiroff, Executive Director and Founder of Breast Cancer Options and Sarah Carlson, a recent addition to the Breast Cancer Options organization. We get to hear about Hope’s cancer journey which led her to be involved with extensive research and advocacy for breast cancer care and health policy. Then we spend some time understanding the importance of patient advocacy, discuss the science related to cancer care and prevention, all of the programming they offer from kids camps to metastatic retreats, and are joined by caller Ilona Ross who added more to contemplate in this complex conversation based upon her efforts to advocate for herself.

Breast Cancer Options is an independent non-profit 501(C)3 organization and the largest provider of free and unique breast cancer services in the Hudson Valley. In many places, we are the only provider. We are an organization of survivors and their supporters who understand that a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is suddenly faced with some of the most important decisions she will ever make about her own healthcare. In deciding on a plan of action, it is important to understand:

  • That all questions are good ones
  • Which information is credible and reliable
  • What statistics really mean
  • Which lifestyle changes can make a difference
  • How science-based integrative medicine can be used with conventional treatments.
  • That you do not have to face all this, including physician visits, by yourself

Their mission is to educate breast cancer patients about effective treatment options, to advocate for and support informed patient choice and to promote public awareness regarding cancer risk reduction.

288 Rev Shirley on Love and Liminal Space

Today I get to spend two hours with Shirley Nelson, a special human who I was introduced to via Kia Abilay a dearly departed friend, mentor, healer and person who married me!

For more than 30 years Rev Shirley has led sessions in spiritual development and
personal growth. She is an interfaith interspiritual minister and a compassionate care
counselor who serves various communities in the greater Cleveland area as a preacher,
retreat leader, and a workshop facilitator. Shirley is the author of The Many Faces of
Prayer and recently self-published My Soul Speaks of Grief: Poems and Reflections on
Love, Loss and Grief. She enjoys reading, spending time in nature, listening to music,
dancing and walking.

Today we wander through the subject of Shirley’s religious background having been raised Baptist but knowing that wasn’t the right path for her to now offering sermons of her own driven by love. A recent sermon was delving into the subject of “liminal space” which is a fascinating subject to me so we spent some time understanding it and then moved onto a favorite topic, love. You can reach out to Shirley or subscribe to her mailing list for her newsletters by emailing shirley.nelson@live.com.

287 Spirituality and Politics “The Economy and the Tarot”

It’s another installment of politics and spirituality where Marielena and I go off on some subjects loosely affiliated with the art of living and the art of living together. Inspired by this NPR article where they consult the Tarot, we talk about economic theories, or theories in general, and how perhaps we’ve forgotten that they are in fact just theories. We might actually be creating our reality, and inflation, so if that’s the case, how can we do it better? We’re in The Tower folks!!!

286 Marielena Ferrer and Elinor Levy on Folk Arts

Today Marielena Ferrer covers for Theresa and welcomes guest Elinor Levy or Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor Levy joined Arts-Mid Hudson in September 2016 as the Folk Arts Program manager. A native of Oakland, California, she has bounced around the country from California to Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now New York. Previously, she worked in Las Vegas as the folklorist for Clark County Parks and Recreation and as executive director of the Northwest Jersey Folklife Project. Having spent the last decade as a folklorist consultant and an adjunct professor, she is excited to be doing public folklore again especially in the culturally rich Hudson Valley. She has a master’s degree in Anthropology from California State University, Sacramento and a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is a folk artist in her own right as a third generation knitter on her mother’s side. In the past three years she has added spinning her own yarn to her skills and looks forward each year to helping a friend shear a small flock of Jacob sheep.

We discuss being a folklorist, the art of observing, participatory research, Cultural Humility, the activities at the Broadway Bubble in Kingston – not your average laundromat, and all the work Elinor oversees and shepherds at Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor can be reached at elevy@artsmidhudson.org.
